Top Ten Tuesday: Small Publishers That You Should Check Out

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is whatever I want. Did you know that the majority of books in stores come from the same 5 giant publishers? That doesn’t seem fair to me. Here are ten small publishers that need more love. Please click the links and check out their catalogs.

Small Publishers That You Should Check Out

Persephone Books

What they publish: reprinted cookbooks, diaries, memoirs, novels, and short story collections by overlooked mid-twentieth century women writers.

Unsung Stories

What they publish: science-fiction, fantasy, horror, and all the weird stuff that blurs the lines between those genres.

YesYes Books

What they publish: “provocative” poetry, short fiction, and experimental art from writers and artists around the world. If you like bizarre book covers, check out this publisher.

Bluemoose Books

What they publish: Literary fiction and nonfiction. No orange-headed celebrities allowed.

Black Lawrence Press

What they publish: contemporary fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, anthologies, and English translations of German books.

Unnamed Press

What they publish: fiction and nonfiction by international writers featuring "unlikely protagonists, undiscovered territories and courageous voices."

Tilted Axis Press

What they publish: translated contemporary literature.

404 INK

What they publish: Literary fiction, short story collections, and nonfiction. "Nasty women" shaking up the publishing industry.

Stone Bridge Press

What they publish: Books about Asia. Manga, fiction, nonfiction, poetry, children's books, arts and crafts.

Nine Arches Press

What they publish: Poetry by new and emerging poets.

Do you read books published by small presses? Do you have any recommendations for me?

  1. What a great post. I don’t know if any I read are small or not so small. I know the huge ones like harrier Collins but not so sure about the small ones

  2. I do read books by small press publishers but can't think of any off the top of my head. I've found a few book gems among them.

  13. Love the idea of this post. Paying attention to publishing houses is something I want to try and do more of lately - and I definitely think there should be more than just the same 5 or so up the top. And there are so many imprints within houses. There is just so much to learn!!

  14. I don't generally pay much attention to the actual publishers of the Indie stuff I read but I do enjoy seeking out more Indie books in my favourite genres!

  15. This is the first year I've started tracking what publishers I'm reading. The first thing I found is that even when the publisher is not called one of the big names, it's still almost always a subdivision of one of them. The only other publishing company I can think of is FirstSecond, who publish a huge amount of graphic novels.
