Top Ten Tuesday: One-Sentence Book Reviews

This post contains affiliate links. I earn a commission from qualifying purchases.

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday! Today, I’m going to write book blurbs. You know those short endorsements from celebrities or authors that publishers plaster on book covers? I’m going to write those for the last 10 books I read. Blurbs are supposed to convince readers to buy the book. Unfortunately, I didn’t love every book I’ve read recently. A few of my blurbs will be anti-blurbs. They’ll be the opposite of helpful and probably hurt book sales. So, that’s awkward. I guess my blurbs are more honest than the ones you find on real books. Whatever. Let’s get into it. Click the book’s title to see the full synopsis.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books With People On The Cover

This post contains affiliate links. I earn a commission from qualifying purchases.

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday! Today, we’re talking about book covers. Usually, my least-favorite book covers are the ones with people on them. I find “people covers” distracting because the characters on the cover rarely look like the characters in my imagination. I don’t like that. But, there are some stunning “people covers” in the book world. I adore these covers because they give the reader a glimpse into the story. I want to know who these characters are and what they’re doing.

Here are 10+ “people covers” that grabbed my attention and made me stop scrolling. Click the titles to see a synopsis.

Top Ten Tuesday: I’m The Worst Book Cover Designer Ever

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday! Today, we’re talking about book covers. Have you ever wondered what it takes to design a book cover? I have. I stare at gorgeous covers and wish I had artistic talent. There are some truly stunning books in the world. The books I’m going to show you in this post . . . are not those stunning books. I decided to live out my book designer dream and create some covers for pretend books. The results are not great. I’m not an artist. I jumped into this project without doing any research whatsoever. I want you to have realistic expectations before we wade into the mess I made. You’re probably going to cringe at my creations.

The first step to creating a book cover is learning what the book is about. For my pretend books, I Googled “random book title generator.” (Yes, those exist.) I played with different generators and picked the . . . um . . . stupidest titles. Then I created covers to match the titles. Here’s what happened:

Top Ten Tuesday: Jobs I’d Have If I Were Fictional

Have you ever come across a fascinating job in a novel and thought, Is that job real? Am I too old for a drastic career change? That’s what we’re talking about today! I wish I was a fictional character so I could have these awesome “jobs.” We should probably put “jobs” in quotes because some of these activities are seriously stretching the definition of that word. A few of my “jobs” are actually far-fetched schemes to avoid work. So . . . they’re the opposite of jobs. Whatever. This is my stupid fantasy career list. Don’t overthink it.

Discussion: Do These Books Deserve 5 Stars?

This post contains affiliate links. I earn a commission from qualifying purchases.

I’m going to make some book predictions! At the start of 2020, I chose 10 books that I hadn’t read yet but thought I’d love. Over the course of the year, I read the books, then shared my reviews in December. I’m going to do that again. These are my 2021 5-star predictions.

I currently have 50-something unread books on my to-be-read (TBR) shelf. I think all of them have the potential to earn a 5-star review from me. (They wouldn’t be on the shelf if I didn’t think I’d love them.) But, I’m extra excited about the books in this post because they have mostly positive reviews on Goodreads. I hope I love them as much as everybody else does.

Top Ten Tuesday: Old Books That Don’t Suck

This post contains affiliate links. I earn a commission from qualifying purchases.

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday! This week’s topic is older books that are still worth reading. Readers (including me) have a habit of focusing on new releases. We want to read the newest, trendiest, greatest thing, which leads us to overlook older books. I’m here to make a case for the oldies! Many of them are beautifully written, packed with memorable characters, and have lessons that are still relevant in the modern world. For the sake of this post, I’m defining “old” as “published before 1990.” I know 1990 isn’t old for a human, but if a book is still in print and earning money after 30+ years, that’s impressive.
