The Sunday Post #83

The Sunday Post is hosted by The Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to recap the past week, talk about next week, and share news. It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? is hosted by Book Date. I get to tell you what I’ve read recently.

On The Blog Last Week

On The Blog This Week

  • On Monday I review The Last Summer of Reason by Tahar Djaout.
  • On Wednesday I review The V-Word: True Stories about First-Time Sex by Amber J. Keyser (Editor).
  • On Thursday I wonder where the asexual YA characters are.

In My Reading Life

Last week, I finished Revolver by Marcus Sedgwick and I See Reality: Twelve Short Stories about Real Life by Grace Kendall (editor). Then I read Guts: The True Stories behind Hatchet and the Brian Books by Gary Paulsen and This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab. Right now, I’m rereading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling.

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. My prescription got refilled. Finally.
  2. My January wrap-up. My wrap-ups take forever to write, but they’re so much fun.
  3. Planning what I’m going to eat during the Super Bowl. I don’t care about football. I’m not even 100% sure which teams are playing. Super Bowl parties give me an opportunity to cheat on my diet, and I’m going to eat buffalo wings.
  4. Reality TV. I binge-watched The Bachelor. Don’t hate me. (Hate Corinne.)
  5. Hank Green made me feel slightly better about posting political stuff on my social medias. I’m me, and I’m not capable of keeping my mouth shut.

Take care of yourselves and be kind to each other! See you around the blogosphere!

  1. I hate seeing people so divided, but that's ALL I want to say about politics. I really need to do a HP re-read, but I haven't done any re-reads in the last year and a half. Just no time. Hope you have a great week!

    1. I always feel guilty about rereading because I have a ton of unread books on my shelf. I really love Harry Potter, though.

  2. For some reason I love the cover of Revolver. It just draws me in. Over here in Canada we're watching all the political stuff happening there. My parents are Italian immigrants and Montreal is full of immigrants. Hope you have a good reading week!

  3. So glad you got your prescription refilled finally! I actually love the Superbowl but agree it is a great excuse for a cheat day. I tried to watch the Bachelor but I actually couldn't deal with it. I did see Corrine and she is the worst!! Have a great week!

  4. Sometimes it is hard to focus on good things when there are so many negative and scary happenings in the world.

    Nuff said.

Enjoy your books (and having your prescription refilled!). Here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

    1. Yeah, I’ve cut down on blogging a little because it’s been hard to concentrate lately. I’m slowly getting back into it, though.

Is Hank Green related to John Green???

    1. Yep, Hank and John are brothers. They both make videos on the same YouTube channel, but I mostly watch Hank’s videos. The topics he talks about are more interesting to me.

  6. I love how positive you are AJ. That is a smart skill we will need in the next few years. I think it's great that you post political stuff. If people don't like it, too bad, so sad. I am eager to read This Savage Song. I have it, but can't get to it yet (very frustrating!!!). Have a wonderful February.

  7. Nice review of The Middle ages- I just about choked when I read a couple of your observations. The,um, doctor responsibilities- ewww! And I guess it doesn't surprise me that medieval peasant food was more nutritious than modern American. what does THAT say?

Mmm buffalo wings. I don't eat em much but when I do, I gotta have that hot buffalo sauce. I love the sauce. then your mouth is burning but it's so worth it. I'm not sure how that works.

  8. I wouldn't worry about posting political stuff on social media. People who disagree can unfollow if they like and it's good to feel as if we have a voice sometime.

    Enjoy your Superbowl snacks!

  12. Sometimes I feel like I have to post political content on my social media channels simply because I otherwise feel so utterly powerless in the wake of everything that's happening. I can't just sit back and do nothing as people are hurt, so I have to do something, even if it's just to click "retweet" over and over again!

    1. Agreed. The political stuff does make me feel less powerless. Everyone wants to feel heard, even if it's only on Twitter.

  14. I enjoy politics and I talk about it with my dad all the time but I rarely do it online. There are so many trollos out there looking to make your life a misery if they disagree with you and my doctor has told me to avoid stress so I don't go near other people's arguments on social media! I will post a comment on blog posts about it though!

    1. Yeah, people online can be nasty. I’m pretty good at ignoring trolls, but they do make everything less pleasant.

  16. I love Guts and This Savage Song. I've only read the one Sedgewick, but really liked it, and started Blood Red, Snow White last night. And I'm in the middle of reading Chamber of Secrets to my kids--got the ten year old the illustrated version for Christmas. And the "Reality" collection sounds interesting too. Nice book week!

I feel like as a white cis-gendered straight middle class US-born woman, the fact that I CAN take a break from politics is part of the reason why I SHOULD speak up every chance I get.
