Top Ten Tuesday: Auto-Buy Authors

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is top ten auto-buy authors. A few months ago, I wrote a post about how I have no auto-buy authors. For me, the synopsis is way more important than the author. If a book sounds boring, I won’t read it, no matter who wrote it. My favorite authors are Margaret Atwood and Stephen King, but I wouldn’t consider either of them auto-buy authors. They’ve both written many, many books that I have no interest in reading. So, this week’s topic was difficult. These are the authors who come closest to being auto-buy authors for me. I chose them because I’ve read and loved several of the books they’ve published.

My Almost-Auto-Buy Authors

V.E. Schwab: Her books are guilty pleasures. They’re not great works of literature, but I have so much fun reading them that I don’t care. I can’t wait for the sequel to A Darker Shade of Magic.

Rainbow Rowell: I love her characters. She’s so good at writing realistic teens and young adults.

Karen Russell: She’s one of my favorite short story writers, and her novel is pretty awesome, too. I don’t know why she isn’t more popular in the blogosphere. She writes strange, imaginative magical realism.

John Green: I like the ideas he explores in his books. They make me think about things in new ways.

Markus Zusak: I love his writing style.

That’s all I can think of. Am I the only one who doesn’t have auto-buy authors?

  2. I haven't actually read ANY of these!! I definitely have auto buy authors, but certainly less than many others this week. I had a really hard time making a list of ten and even included an author who isn't even alive! Haha!

  3. I really feel like the worst book worm ever because I haven't read a single Victoria Schwab book. Not a one. Nor have I read any Rainbow Rowell books. I know, I know shame on me. I'm gonna get there, I promise!

  4. I've only read Landline by Rainbow Rowell, but I agree - I loved the characters in that book. I can't wait to read more. I have some auto-buy authors but I really am more of a library person these days.

  5. I love Karen Russell! Her short stories are twisted and deep and wonderful. I haven't yet made my way into Swamplandia! but it's definitely on the list.

I actually put her on my list of top ten fairy tales - I bent the rules a little and included a fair shake of magic realism instead of strict retellings. Here's the full list if you're interested!

  6. I actually haven't read any of these books. But I guess it's because there's a lot of contemporary and I don't really read that genre much.

  8. Great list of authors. I probably do not have many authors I would consider to be "auto-buy authors" for me if any. I really enjoyed books by Rainbow Rowell and Victoria Schwab as well. The rest are authors I have yet to read books by, but hopefully I will read their books soon.

  9. You are not alone! I didn't really have auto-buy authors either. I looked at my bookshelf to see who I had the most books of. Turns out I have almost all of the books from the authors I mentioned in my "auto buy section" of my TTT so I suppose I do autobuy them.

Great list! I forgot about Rainbow Rowell <3

  10. I have only read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, but I do intend to read The Messenger as soon as I possibly can. Oh, and I like the sound of Rainbow Rowell as well. I haven't read any of her books but she is so popular so I bought Fangirl the other day and am looking forward to trying that one!
