On The Blog Last Week
- On Tuesday I showed you the longest books I’ve ever read.
- On Thursday I reviewed a fruitcake. Yep. A fruitcake.
- On Saturday there was a book haul.
On The Blog This Week
- On Tuesday I review some fun books about brutal murder.
- On Thursday we discuss real-life monsters.
- On Saturday there’s a book haul.
In My Reading Life
Last week, I finished rereading Vicious by V.E. Schwab. I still love that book. If you like anti-heroes,
superpowers, and intricate murder plots, you need to read Vicious.
Right now, we’re in the middle of Fraterfest Read-a-thon. I did
really well with reading on the first day. Then I started slacking. I’m
about halfway through Midnight in The
Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt. It’s true crime. So far, it’s extremely
well-written and extremely slow.
In My Internet Stalking Life
- Are you looking for something spooky to read this Halloween? These bloggers have recommendations: Tracy @ Cornerfolds; Brittani @ Hope, Faith & Books; Norees @ NoReadsTooGreat.
In The Rest Of My Life
Five things that made me happy last week:
- My preordered books finally arrived! They were delayed for no reason. Protip for online bookstores: If I preorder a book, it’s because I want the book on release day, not a week after release day. If I wanted it a week late, I could have hauled my lazy ass to Target and bought the thing.
- I joined a writing group. Hopefully this will motivate me to write stuff. And to talk to people.
- Nachos!
- I’m winning at #bookstagram. I’ve posted a photo every day in October so far.
- It’s supposed to snow 5 inches this week (which I’m not happy about), but it gave me an excuse to wander around and take pictures of pretty trees. The snow will ruin them.

the blogosphere!
I use to do 10 things in my wrap up so I loved seeing your 5 that made you happy!! Yay for bookstagram. Stay warm in all that’s snow ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks! Sometimes it’s hard to come up with five things, but I’ve been doing it for so many years that I can’t stop now.

I've got into V.E. Schwab's work as well which surprised me because I'm not one for fantasy. Happy Sunday!
ReplyDeleteMe, too! I hardly ever read fantasy, but I love her books.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Berendt's book is sooooo very slow, but it's also remarkably atmospheric which I love in a book. And that Schwab book is going straight on the wish list.
ReplyDeleteI finished the Berendt book. I liked the second half a lot more than the first. It actually had a plot!
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I would be so annoyed if preordered books came that late. Awesome job at Bookstagram. Oh man snow. I am not ready for even thinking about that. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI was annoyed. I hardly ever preorder books. I made time to read them, and then they showed up a week late, so now they have to wait.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I'd be really upset if my pre-ordered books were late. I was upset when Wildcard was sent by UPS and didn't get to my house until 4 PM ish, LOL. I ended up buying a second copy for my Kindle so I didn't have to wait. Which actually worked out because my boy is reading the duology now and I don't have to lend him my only copy.
ReplyDeleteI’m glad it worked out! I was not happy when release day came and my preorders didn’t.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I hate waiting for books that I've ordered...but in my case, they were pre-ordered, but coming from places like the UK and took a while.
ReplyDeleteThis week I got the long-awaited Open Your Eyes by Paula Daly. Can't wait to read it!
I keep eyeing those Schwab books, and while they don't seem like my kind of read, I am curious.
Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting my blog.
If the books are coming from overseas, I’m fine with waiting, but these ones weren’t!
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Congrats on sharing photos on Instagram every single day of October so far. I've tried post a photo everyday, but I then realized I'll never be able to do it. A writing group sounds nice. It's good to have some support while you're writing.
ReplyDeleteWishes of a good week!
Tânia @MyLovelySecret
I’m only posting every day in October. Then it’s back to “whenever I have time” posting.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil was a great movie. I'd like to tackle the book and see what is different. And I often reread books I love. Especially when I'm stuck on what to read next:) Good luck with FraterFest!
ReplyDeleteMy Sunday Post
I didn’t know it was a movie! I’ll have to look it up.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I forgot about Cybils. I'll have to give it some thought. I haven't been reading much kid lit this year.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I haven’t been reading much kidlit, either. I think I burned myself out on it while I was getting my MFA. I’m still recovering!
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I don't really register the length of books these days, given I read a lot of stuff on my Kindle, but I have read all the Harry Potter books. I hadn't realised they were so long! I've just read her latest Robert Galbraith book, which was also reasonably long at over 600, but loved it.
ReplyDeleteI mostly read physical books, so my wrists definitely know when I’m reading a big book! The Harry Potter books read so fast that they don’t feel long.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
OH I'm so sorry your pre-ordered books arrived late, that's so annoying :/ I'm glad you finally got them, at least that's something :D
ReplyDeleteI hope you'll have a fantastic week! :D
I’m happy they’re here, but I wish they had come when I had time to read them.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Wow! Five inches of snow already. We had frost and a few people saw some snow flurries this last week, but we're just supposed to get a little more rain--and maybe have some sunny days! We've gotten so much rain that our grass and many of our trees are still bright green!
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a wonderful week and if you get that snow that it goes away quickly.
The snow wrecked all the pretty trees. I was hoping they’d stay red and yellow a little longer.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I'm still so torn over whether to read Vicious. I love anti-heroes but I am not into superpowers or hero books at all. :/ Good luck with the read-a-thon! Very brave of you to start with non-fiction! And thank you so much for including my blog in your recap! I hate it when pre-ordered books show up late and it's really why I only tend to order from Amazon. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteThere are no heroes in Vicious! Everybody is . . . well . . . vicious. The powers aren’t a huge part of the story. It’s mostly about a rivalry between two guys who betrayed each other.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Kind of jealous of the snow, in NJ it snows but not so early, most of the time we get like 24 inches in one day and then nothing else.
ReplyDeleteI love Nachos :)
Have a great week, AJ! Happy Reading!
We get a few blizzards every year where it snows a ton. Most of the snow from the weekend is melted now. It might actually be a reasonable temperature today.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Ooh, a writing group! What kind of stuff are you hoping to write?
ReplyDeleteHopefully fiction. Not that I have any ideas, but I’ll try!
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I still need to read Vicious! It's been on my TBR for ages, and I love all of her other books. I'm not participating in Fraterfest this year, but I hope to next year! However, I am participating in the HoHoHo Readathon that she's also hosting. I've already made my post and picked out my books -- yay!
ReplyDeleteLindsi @ Do You Dog-ear?
Good luck with the readathon!
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Looks like you're winning RIP... mine has been kind of a bust, but I'm already looking forward to Nonfiction November. We started the week with really warm weather, then it got cold, rainy, and windy. Almost all of the leaves are gone, and snow is in the forecast. Yuck! Have a great week :)
ReplyDeleteI forgot about Nonfiction November. I probably have enough nonfiction on my shelf to make it work. I should join.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I need to read Vicious! I have a hard copy, but I should break down and by the audio because I just won't ever get to it otherwise. That's so annoying about your pre-orders! I totally agree! If you bought it before everyone else they should have it shipped pronto. LOVE the photo of Fall colors! :)
ReplyDeleteYes! I don’t understand why the preorders came so late. I ordered them months ago. The store knew it was going to have to ship them.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I should have (still should, actually) read Vicious since the Bookish Games are BASED on that book. Duh Greg. I can see though already from the Games how the book is kinda cool...
ReplyDeleteGood luck with wrapping up Fraterfest!
I don’t know anything about the Bookish Games, but yes, everybody should read Vicious!
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I truly need to read Vicious. One of these days, I swear.
ReplyDeleteYou're kicking butt with bookstagram, I haven't posted a photo since August!
As soon as October is over, I’ll probably go back to posting once every few months. I’m so unmotivated to use Instagram.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
How exciting that you joined a writing group! Hope it ends up inspiring you. :-)
ReplyDeleteNicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction
I hope so, too!
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
What a beautiful place for a walk! And, yes, happiness is the arrival of books. Enjoy your new stack!
ReplyDeleteThanks! It is a nice place to walk. My dog loves it.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Way to win Instagram. I sucked at it. And nachos are almost as good as cake, IMHO. Good luck with the writing group. I at least know whatever your write will be witty and amusing.
ReplyDeleteHaha, witty and amusing and full of MURDER.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
That is crazy that your pre-orders showed up a week after release. What is the point in that?! Nachos always make me happy :) I can't believe that you have snow on the way. I need some fall and winter needs to wait a bit. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI wish fall had lasted longer. The snow knocked all the leaves off the trees. Now it just looks like winter out there.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Yeah, the one time I pre-ordered a book, I got it about a month after the release date. So now I just use it as an excuse to get to the bookstore.
ReplyDeleteSnow, huh? I remember my first year in college, in Vermont, we got our first snow on Oct. 4. We are still having sunny days in the 60s here in western Oregon, and I'm glad, since our next step is not snow, but rain.
Very cool about the writing group. How did you find them?
It snows pretty early here, but not this much. The snow doesn’t usually stick until around Halloween. Then there’s snow until May. The writing group is alumni from my grad school. We do the teleconferencing thing.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I never preorder anything, but if it was me, I'd have complained. I can -kind of- forgive being a day late accounting for weather, but a week?! I need a credit or something.
ReplyDeleteSnow already?! Eek, I hope you keep warm. :)
Thanks for stopping by, have a great week!
I hardly ever preorder. Actually, these were the second and third books I’ve ever preordered. I’ll order from Amazon if I ever do this again.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
cannot wait to get to vicious! I LOOOOOVE villains and anti-heroes! good luck with your readathon!
ReplyDeleteI love Vicious, though I JUST read it recently. I need to read the sequel soon. I'm not doing well with Fraterfest, but I hope to get a lot more reading in these next two days. LOL It was a very busy weekend!!
ReplyDelete-Lauren
www.shootingstarsmag.net
I didn’t do well with Fraterfest, either. I read 1.5 books and DNFed 1 book.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Oh my gosh, snow forecasted already! I'm just sooo not ready for that. I hope you enjoy your writing group.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I’m not ready for snow, either.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I love the picture of the fall colored trees you took and the path is like a sidewalk! It looks lovely. I like snow. I love how white it is in contrast to the dense black of night. Everything really is black and white Lol j/k
ReplyDeleteI like snow, too, but I prefer that it waits until winter. I want fall.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I too hate when pre-orders come after a long time. What's the point of even pre-ordering then?
ReplyDeleteI know people love her, but I am yet to read a V.E. Schwab book. Hopefully soon :D
That's pretty great about your Instagram. I have reduced my posting frequency so much.
Have a lovely week.
I know! I didn’t expect the preorders to come so late. I thought the point of preordering was to get books right away.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I'm not ready for snow -- we've had only 3 days of fall so far. Ha ha.
ReplyDeleteI wasn’t ready, either. Fall just started!
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
It's too early for snow! It's odd, here in WV it seems like the trees haven't even really started turning much. I did some reading this weekend and managed to finish a book but also had to take Gpa to the doctor because he got sick again. We did watch some awesome football games.
ReplyDeleteI need to read Vicious. I have it on my Kindle and know people rave about it so it's probably time I see what it's all about. Hope you have a wonderful week and yep, now I'm craving nachos!
I hope Gpa is okay!
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Wow snow!! That is crazy! I love fall and winter but I am not ready for snow yet. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI’m not ready for snow, either. I feel like we skipped a season and went from boiling to freezing overnight.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Hmmm, now I really want nachos.
ReplyDeleteHaha, I ALWAYS want nachos.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Vicious sounds like a great book, will have to add that to my TBR!
ReplyDeleteMy Roundup
YES! Everybody should read it.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I really want to read something by V. E. Schwab but have too many review books right now to fit in anything else. Our strong wind last week took care of most of our pretty leaves. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way. There are so many authors I want to read, but I have way too many unread books sitting around.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Snow?! It seems really early for snow (says the Maryland/Virginia resident.) But I saw on Kimberly's (Caffeinated Reviewer) Instagram that it's snowing where she lives, too. Brrr.
ReplyDeleteI've been enjoying your Instagram photos. And your fruitcake review. And good luck with the writing! I should find a writing group. But to make time, I'd have to give something up; I can't fit anything else in right now.
Thanks! I’ve been trying really hard with Instagram. It’s surprisingly time-consuming. I don’t usually have that much patience.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I'd be annoyed that pre-ordered books came late, too. Snow? No, not yet!
ReplyDeleteHope you have a good week.
I was very annoyed! I wanted to read them right away, but now they have to wait until I have time.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I'm also a judge for the Cybils. I'll be busy busy busy. My weekly updates
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the judging. I’ll be very busy in January.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Yay for winning at Instragram! Your photos look so great.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I’m trying really hard.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Glad you loved Vicious! Oh wow, that's a gorgeous photo of the trees! And yay for winning at bookstagram :-) Yum, nachos would make me happy too, I haven't had them in so long!
ReplyDeleteThanks! The trees were so pretty before the snow ruined them.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
A writing group sounds really fun. My mom was in one when I was a kid and she got several short stories and a few nonfiction articles published while taking part. Then she went on to do some more on her own.
ReplyDeleteIt’s great that your mom was successful with writing. I’ve had a few things published, but I’ve kind of fallen off the writing wagon. It’s very easy to get discouraged and quit.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Oh NO not snow! That is a curse word here. I hate thinking about it. I know what you mean about pre-orders. Give me a break with the wait. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteMary
Most of the snow is melted now. Hopefully it stays away for a while.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Omg snow already?! That seems soon! And those trees are gorgeously stunning ahhh. Forever wish we had colour colour changes in Australia haah. And YAS FOR VICIOUS. I reread it because I remembered nearly nothing 😂and I've just started Vengeful which is just as delightfully stabby omg.
ReplyDeleteI’m so excited for Vengeful! I’m hopefully going to read it during Dewey’s Readathon.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
What a gorgeous photo! Things are still mostly green here, but we are starting to see some glimpses of fall color.
ReplyDeleteI recently read City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab and LOVED it so I am eager to read her backlist & have heard good things about Vicious.
And Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil has been on my bookshelf for so long (probably more than a decade!) that I forgot it was there - maybe I will read it for Nonfiction November. Thanks for the reminder!
Enjoy your books this week - and stay warm!
Sue

You are becoming quite the instagrammer! I always fizzle out on daily posts. Loving the fall picture.
ReplyDeleteWow.. Every day of October so far a picture on Instagram? That's impressive.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the snow.. Those trees sure look nice.
Happy Reading!
