Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews. I get to show off all the books I’ve gotten recently. It’s been a few months since I did a haul post. I guess it’s overdue.
It’s Been A While Book Haul
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott (Little Women #1)
One of the most popular books
ever written about childhood charmingly recounts the home life of four sisters:
literary-minded Jo March; Meg, the older sister who marries a young tutor;
fashionable and artistic Amy; and gentle, musically inclined Beth. An unforgettable
depiction of mid-19th century New England life.
Very Good Lives: The Fringe Benefits of Failure and the Importance of Imagination by J.K. Rowling
Drawing from stories of her own
post-graduate years, the world famous author addresses some of life's most
important questions with acuity and emotional force.
Days Without End by Sebastian Barry
Thomas McNulty, aged barely
seventeen and having fled the Great Famine in Ireland, signs up for the U.S.
Army in the 1850s. With his brother in arms, John Cole, Thomas goes on to fight
in the Indian Wars—against the Sioux and the Yurok—and, ultimately, the Civil
War. Orphans of terrible hardships themselves, the men find these days to be
vivid and alive, despite the horrors they see and are complicit in.
Son by Lois Lowry (The Giver #4)
They called her Water Claire.
When she washed up on their shore, no one knew that she came from a society
where emotions and colors didn’t exist. That she had become a Vessel at age
thirteen. That she had carried a Product at age fourteen. That it had been
stolen from her body. Claire had a son. But what became of him she never knew.
What was his name? Was he even alive? She was supposed to forget him, but that
was impossible. Now Claire will stop at nothing to find her child, even if it
means making an unimaginable sacrifice.
The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith (Mr. Ripley #1)
Tom Ripley: a young striver,
newly arrived in the heady world of Manhattan in the 1950s. A product of a
broken home, branded a "sissy" by his dismissive Aunt Dottie, Ripley
becomes enamored of the moneyed world of his new friend, Dickie Greenleaf. This
fondness turns obsessive when Ripley is sent to Italy to bring back his
libertine pal but grows enraged by Dickie's ambivalent feelings for Marge, a
charming American dilettante.
Have
you read any of these? What did you think?
Talented Mr. Ripley was so good! Am talking of the movie though. I keep forgetting it was a book. I'd love to read it too.
ReplyDeleteI didn’t know it was a movie. I guess I’ll have something to watch if I like the book.

I enjoyed the Ripley books. I particularly loved the second and third books and have still to read the others. I love the character of Ripley.
ReplyDeleteI’m looking forward to reading it.

Nice haul! I got Little Women at the beginning of the year but I still haven't read it! Hope to do soon this winter. Have a wonderful day and happy reading!
ReplyDeleteI got it a few months ago. I haven’t read it and forgot to haul it until now.

I think Son is the most awful of that series (not awful as in written badly, but just everything that goes on in the book is basically horrible). I hope you enjoy your books and have a great weekend. - Katie
ReplyDeleteThanks! I’m interested to see how the series ends. I read the first book when I was 13, so I’ve been waiting a long time.

Some interesting stuff! I think Rowling's book looks interesting... I love it when big time authors share some of their observations and whatnot. Always an interesting perspective!
ReplyDeleteI read it already. It was interesting. And very short.

I recently read the first two books in The Giver series and I'm looking forward to three and four! I hope you like Son! It's the one I'm most excited for.
ReplyDeleteI’ll probably like it. I really liked the first two books and felt okay about the third.

Little Women is one I read when I was very young and I remember liking it but it might just be because there were four sisters in that book and if you include me, we are a family of four sisters too. So... don't bet on that for the quality of how good the book is :P I'm also surprised I never read Son though I've read most of her other novels. Hope you enjoy all of these books ^.^
ReplyDeleteThanks! I might be too old and critical for Little Women, but it’s a classic, so I’ll give it a try.

Yay for book hauls! Little Women is such a great book!
ReplyDeleteI hope I like it! I’m past the target age for it.

Ummm I've never even heard of that book by J.K. Rowling?? I really need to look into that! I read The Giver a couple years ago and didn't care for it, but it's one of my brother's all time favorite series! I hope you enjoy Son!
ReplyDeleteI read The Giver when I was 13, and it quickly became one of my favorites. Hopefully I like Son. I loved the second book in the series but not the third.

I loved JK Rowling’s little book. I read Son but I can’t remember if I liked it. I think it was good and tied the whole series together. Hope you enjoy all your books.
ReplyDeleteI should probably reread the series, but I don’t think I’ll have time for that. We’ll see.

AJ thanks for visiting. I enjoyed your review of JK Rowling's book. Pity as I'm in search of maybe how she got to where she is, would be a WONDERFUL story.
ReplyDeleteI would love it if she wrote a longer memoir. Very Good Lives is just too short!

I've read Little Women, I did like it. The Giver has been on my list for years, I'm not sure why I keep putting off reading it. Enjoy all your new reads and have a lovely week.
ReplyDeleteThe Giver was one of my childhood favorites. I need to reread it eventually.

I have got to say, I didn't enjoy Little Women. I sadly DNFed the second part. It was just so preachey!
ReplyDeleteWow, Son sounds amazing though.
I don’t have high hopes for Little Women, but it’s a classic, so I want to try.

Little Women is a fave of mine. I did enjoy The Giver and thought it fine as a stand-alone but enjoyed the sequels, mostly. Thanks for stopping by my stack!

I’m glad you liked it. Hopefully I’ll get to read it soon.

I've actually never read Little Women - maybe I should change that!
ReplyDeleteHaha, that’s the whole reason I acquired that book.

I'm thinking you might be slightly past the magical age to read Little Women. I adored it as a kid, but wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole now--mostly so I can keep my sentimental fondness intact. Like many, I enjoyed the movie Talented Mr. Ripley but haven't read the book. I think I liked Son--as I recall, it was kind of weird, but also somewhat satisfying.
ReplyDeleteI don’t have high hopes for Little Women. Preachy books make me rage. It’s a classic, so I feel like I should read it. I’m glad you liked Son and Mr. Ripley.

I haven't read any of these in its entirety. I read a little bit of Little Women though.
ReplyDeleteIt's fun to get new books. In two weeks our Library is having a Friends of the Library book sale... $5 for an entire bag of books on the third day! I'll definitely be heading on over for that. The day before they'll be having books for a discount price, and I might stop by just to see if there's something I absolutely have to have.
I hope you find some good books! It would be very dangerous to set me loose in a place where I could buy books by the bag.

Oh, Little Woman! I love that book! And a J.K. Rowlings book with stories from her life? Cool! Sounds like a good week! Thanks for stopping by! Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteI’m glad you liked it! I hope I will, too.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Son sounds really interesting. I only ever read the first book in The Giver series. Hmmm.
ReplyDeleteI loved the first and second Giver book. The third one was okay. I’m excited for the fourth.

What a great book haul. I loved Little Women so much. I've actually only read the first book of The Giver series so far but I thought that was wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI love Little Women. I went to Louisa May Alcott's house in Concord, MA years ago.
ReplyDeleteI read The Giver back when the DVD came out and didn't love it. But I also read it over a holiday with other activities, so I feel like I may have been distracted. My initial thought is that I won't continue the series, but who knows! Perhaps someday I will. :D
ReplyDeleteI love Mr Ripley, and Patricia Highsmith in general. I hope you enjoy these :-)
