Tag: Halloween Creatures 2.0

I was tagged by Elley the Book Otter to do the Halloween Creatures 2.0 Tag. Let’s do it! This post has spoilers, so tread carefully. I’ll give you a warning when I’m about to spoil something.

Halloween Creatures 2.0 Tag

Witch: A Magical Character Or Book?

This book has “Magic” in the title. Also, it’s so magic that it matches my backyard in October (the most magical month of the year).

Werewolf: A Perfect Book To Read At Night?

At the time I’m writing this post, I’m spending my nights with Revival. It’s not scary enough to give me nightmares, but it’s weirdly intriguing enough to keep me awake until 1 AM. I don’t want to put it down and go to sleep.

Frankenstein: A Book That Truly Shocked You?

It didn’t “truly shock” me, but I liked An Absolutely Remarkable Thing a lot more than I thought I would. It has a great mystery. When I wasn’t reading the book, I wanted to be reading it. I may have neglected some adult responsibilities so that I could keep reading about space robots.

The Devil: A Dark, Evil Character?

Should I break out the Ramsay Bolton memes again? No? Then how about Randall Flagg. He’s the evil force in Stephen King’s universe. He does all kinds of bad things.

Grim Reaper: A Character That Never Should Have Died?

Skip this question if you don’t want to be SPOILED for Harry Potter.

Lupin and Tonks. I understand the symmetry: Both of Harry’s parents died in the First Wizarding War. Two parents of an infant died in the Second Wizarding War. Teddy is the new Harry. Blah, blah, blah. But, why? Why was that symmetry necessary? I don’t like it.

Zombie: A Book that Made You Hungry For More?

I was so happy when I learned that Vicious was getting a sequel. I was even happier when I got to see the author in person and buy the sequel.

Gargoyle: A Character You Would Protect At All Costs?

Skip this question if you don’t want to be SPOILED for Game of Thrones.

This is hard because I’m usually okay with character deaths. I like books that have high body counts. Um . . . maybe we shouldn’t kill Jon Snow again? He has important stuff to do! Tyrion Lannister is my favorite, so I’d be sad if he didn’t make it to the end of the series. I don’t want Theon Greyjoy to die in the show until he gets his redemption arc. After that, he can die infinity times. You shouldn’t have betrayed Robb, dude! You brought infinity deaths on yourself.

Vampire: A Book That Sucked The Life Out Of You?

Pretty much everything I had to read for Brit Lit classes in college. So many fancy fictional dinner parties. So many moral lessons. So much boredom.

Ghost: A Book that Still Haunts You?

These books from my preteen years. They were my favorites, so I read them all approximately a million times. I reread them incessantly instead of playing sports or socializing with my fellow preteens.

Demon: A Book That Really Scared You?

Cannibalism: A Perfectly Natural History. Mad Cow Disease and the government cover-up surrounding it are the scariest things I’ve read about all year. In the 1980s, bad beef was killing people. Instead of trying to fix the meat-death problem, the British government suppressed information about the disease so that it didn’t hurt beef sales. How do politicians live with themselves? Seriously.

Skeleton: A Character You Have A Bone To Pick With?

Well, I already mentioned Theon Greyjoy, so let’s go with Leni’s parents in The Great Alone. They are both painfully terrible humans. They put their own petty arguments ahead of their child’s safety.

Mummy: A Book You Would Preserve Throughout Time?

If we’re picking books for a doomsday vault, I’d probably have to choose the ones that had the biggest impact on humanity. I’d pick the religious and philosophy texts that helped shape our modern cultures. I’d choose some science books so that post-apocalypse humans would know about all of the cool junk we had. Some history books need to go in the vault because you can’t forget history. I should probably toss in a few fiction classics. Oh, and Harry Potter is going in so that future humans don’t think we were incredibly boring.

Creepy Doll: A Cover Too Scary To Look At?

I wrote a whole post about this. Click and get ready to cringe. I still can’t believe that these are real books.

Monster Mash: If you want to answer these questions, consider yourself tagged.

  1. Looking at your photo of your backyard...I can confirm that we're experiencing different Octobers. Mine has been dreary with barely and leaves changing.

I agree with you about the HP spoiler. That symmetry didn't seem necessary and it was just a cruel end for a major victory.

    1. October isn’t nice anymore. Our leaves changed, and then it snowed, so everything is gross and soggy now. :(

  2. Oh, theses are really cool questions. It is magic that A Darker Shade Of Magic matched your backyard Lol :)

  3. I agree on the HP thing. I really didn't like the author doing that and Remus was one of my favourite characters. As for GoT, I want Jon and Tyrion to survive! Required reading always sucks the life out of a reader!

    1. I’ll be so sad if anything happens to Jon or Tyrion. Remus was one of my favorite characters, too. He didn’t deserve that ending.

  4. YES to the HP spoiler! It really just seemed gratuitous at that point. Ugh. Also, you're so brave for reading Stephen King at night. I would not be able to survive lol.

    1. Haha, Stephen King books aren’t all scary. Some of them are just really intense.

  5. 100% there with you on Remus and Tonks. Stupid symmetry. ALSO, PROTECTIVE CIRCLE AROUND TYRION LANNISTER!

  6. Oh, I loved The Outsiders and Bridge to Terebithia growing up. Good films too. :)

  7. LOL about fancy dinner parties. And Cannibalism- ugh. Scary stuff.

I never really had Vicious/ Vengeful on my radar til I started playing the Bookish Games- now I'm really intrigued after seeing how some of the characters have been interpreted for the Games.

    1. You should read Vicious and Vengeful. They’re full of murder and evil people.

  8. What a great post! I need to read Revival. And aww yes, Lupin and Tonks, I didn't see that coming.
    Happy Haunting :)

  9. I can totally see why those are you Ghost books. Those are some really devastating books.

  10. I totally agree about Lupin and Tonks. I understand J.K. Rowling wanted to make the series a bit dark and realistic and not everyone could survive, but did she really have to kill off both of them?

  11. YES to your Game of Thrones answer! I've only seen the show, but yes! And I absolutely agree that Harry Potter needs to be preserved forever.

    1. I’ve only read the first 3 GoT books, but I’ve seen every episode of the show multiple times. I’m a little obsessed.

  12. I'm now reading The Stand. I'm a couple hundred pages in and still wondering what's so great about it :( I think it's because of all the jumping around to different characters and the feeling that the story keeps starting over from a different POV. I just read the first Randall Flagg chapter. I get that he's a bad dude. I wonder what exactly he does.

    1. I read The Stand a long time ago, but I remember it getting better as it goes on. Like most King books, it takes a stupidly long time to get going.

  13. This is such a fun tag! I haven't seen it before and I love it. Those books that still haunt you are some that I completely agree with you on. Bridge to Terabithia is one that will stay with me forever, too.

    1. Bridge to Terabithia will stick with me forever. My child self was not prepared for that ending. I guess foreshadowing didn’t work on me because there is tons of it in that book.

  14. Oh Yes on those endless dinner parties! Not all British literature is so dull though, but I guess the fun books don't get taught?

    1. I did like a few of the books I read for Brit Lit classes. I might have liked the others better if I wasn’t forced to read them so quickly. My reading schedule in college was intense. I had to do a lot of skimming.

  15. I'm excited about Vengeful too. I still need to buy it.

  17. Space robots? That book goes directly on my TBR! 🚀

I have not read Hatchet. I probably should. 📚

I cried the most over Hedwig's death. 😢

I can remember every book I read for both American Lit classes I took, and only one I read for Brit Lit. 😂

    1. The space robot book was really good. I took so many lit classes that most of my required reading blurred together. I’ve forgotten a lot of it.

  18. Ahh I'm so glad you felt the same way as I did about An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, this book intrigued me so, so much and I couldn't stop thinking about it. That ending also surprised me a whole lot - I hope we get a sequel haha, I need more!! :D
Lovely answers for this tag! :)
