Top Ten Tuesday: New-To-Me Authors

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is top ten authors I read for the first time in 2017. I put my own twist on the topic. I also put my own ugly graphics on the topic, but shhh. Don’t mention those. For each new-to-me author, I picked 2 books. On the left is a book I read in 2017. On the right is a book I hope to read in 2018. Got it? Here we go.

New-To-Me Authors

Have you read any of these? What did you think?

  1. You discovered some amazing authors this year. I love finding an author who has been around a while but I've just missed. It's a wonderful feeling to go back and read great book after great book.

  2. I need to read more by Adichie! Also Sleeping Giants has been on my list for a while.

  3. I want to read more Daphne du Maurier in 2018. I finally read Rebecca and then I added a couple more of her books to my TBR.

  4. Daphne du Maurier! I love the movie version of The Birds, and really should read the book. I still need to read the second Sylvain Neuvel book too, kinda forgot about that one.

  5. Ahh Ruta Sepetys is one of my favourite authors, glad you enjoyed her books for the first time this year!

  6. I loved REBECCA and then tried to read all the duMaurier. Weirdly, I only liked about half of it. If you like REBECCA, try MY COUSIN RACHEL and THE SCAPEGOAT. I was also struck by THE BIRDS and how little it has in common with the film. As I was reading it I felt instantly it was an allegory for the Blitz -- what would it be like if the Blitz came to the seaside?

  7. Adichie was a speaking at Calvin College Faith and Writing festival a few years ago and her talk was interesting. I don’t know of any of the others.

  8. I didn't know The Birds was Du Maurier. But I guess it makes sense, cuz Hitchcock directed both of them.

  9. I really would like to read more by du Maurier also! I loved Rebecca and think I would really like more of her books. The only other one I've read on your list is George R.R. Martin. I've heard great things about Ruta Sepetys. Great list!

  10. I like your twist on the topic! Very fun. I've read a few of these authors/books. I didn't love THE SERPENT KING, but I did enjoy OUT OF THE DUST. And I love SALT TO THE SEA. If you haven't read Sepetys' OUT OF THE EASY, you should. It's my favorite of hers.

    Happy TTT!

  11. Purple Hibiscus is fab and I am sure I listened to The Thing Around Your Neck on audio, but I don't remember it. Time to download again methinks!
Rebecca is my absolute fave, but I've never read any other Du Maurier books. What if they didn't measure up?!

  12. Of these, I've only read du Maurier and Hesse, but I've heard wonderful things about most of the others. It's great that you discovered so many good authors this year!

  13. I love your spin on the topic! I've started Salt to the Sea but every time I borrow the audiobook I never get to finish it (which is totally my fault) but I did enjoy what I had listened to so far.

  14. I've heard such amazing things about Fredrik Backman. I really need to give him a try this year. I really enjoyed The Serpent King and definitely want to read more from Zentner.

  15. Oh my, I absolutely adore the way you listed your favorites! I'm real excited to read Goodbye Days, the premise caught my eye the instant I read it.

  16. I'm the reverse on Ruta Sepetys. I LOVED Salt to the Sea and can't wait to read Between Shades of Gray this year! I love that you listed books read and the next one you hope to read by each author!

  17. I read Americanah as my first Adichie this year and LOVED it. And I also really liked reading Rebecca as my first du Maurier, but I think I want to follow it up with My Cousin Rachel!

  18. I have nothing but love for Jeff Zentner. TSK is one of my top-ever reads. Here come the tears! I got Britt-Marie at BEA in 2016 (can I tell you how lovely Backman is), and I really enjoyed it. I need to read more Backman books.

  19. Great list! Some of these authors I've read and they are fantastic. I really enjoyed A Man Called Ove, but I'm disappointed that I haven't bought or gotten around to reading any of his other books.

  20. All these except Martin are new to me. Backman's books look interesting.

  21. These are completely new-to-me authors, except for Martin too! There are some books on the list that definitely caught my interest, thanks for sharing :)

Thanks for commenting on my blog!

  22. I've been wanting to read Rebecca because I love Gothic novels, so hopefully I can get my hands on a copy this year! 😊

  23. I haven't read any of these! I've owned Game of Thrones for ages and still can't understand the first page. :( But I WILL read it at some point. I also want to check out The Serpent King and Goodbye Days. Awesome list! <3

  24. I've only read George R.R. Martin and Jeff Zenter! The first book I've read of Jeff's was "The Goodbye Days" so he was a new to me author as well. :)

  25. I haven't read Du Maurier in years, but I remember loving Rebecca. Adichie made a huge impression on me with Half of a Yellow Sun, and I really ought to make the effort to read some more of her work.

  26. I only books I've heard about before were the Game Of Thrones one. Looks like I have some research to do :)

  27. GRRM was new to me this year but I somehow forgot to add him to my list! I think I was under the impression that I read A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms the year before instead of last year. I hope to get A Dance With Dragons done gradually over the next few weeks or more.

  28. Out of the Dust was an excellent story. I really should read more of Karen Hesse's work.

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thanks for stopping by earlier!

  29. You are super brave to start reading George R.R. Martin! I refuse to read that series until he finishes it because I don't believe he will! XD I really loved both of Ruta Sepety's books so I hope you enjoy Salt to the Sea!

  30. I love your twist on this week's topic. I really liked Adichie's Half a Yellow Sun, but I haven't yet read the two you mention. I want to though. I hope you love A Man Called Ove as much as I did.
You have reminded me I need to dive back into Martin's series! Have a Happy New Year!

  31. Oh man, now I'm wishing I had done the same thing with mine. Great idea.

I like Salt to the Sea and Out of the Easy more than Between Shades of Grey, so I have high hopes for you with Sepetys. I've read a handful of Hesse and still like Witness best, but all of her work is good. I want to read Purple HIbiscus this year, having started with Americanah last year. We've read opposite Greenberg graphic novels. I was avoiding Backman because the covers look so precious and heart-warming, which can be really awful when done badly, but if you like his stuff, I'll definitely give it a try.

  32. The only book I've read from your list is Rebecca. It's haunting and leaves an impression. I want to check out The Serpent King soon

    ReplyDelete
  33. I haven't read any of these yet, but I'm hoping to pick up a Sylvain Neuvel or Jeff Zentner book soon. And The One Hundred Nights of Hero, for sure!

    ReplyDelete
  34. A bunch of new to me authors here, but some of which I've heard amazing things about. Sounds like it was a good year - I hope the same can be said for 2018.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I haven't actually read any of these but there are some super pretty covers on your TTT list this week!I especially like the 'between shades of grey' cover because I really like covers with eyes on them. The Sylvain Neuvel books are gorgeous too! I hope you had a great bookish year!

  36. Wow, they all look like amazing authors! Great list, and I hope you discover some more fantastic authors this year!
