October Wrap-Up

October Snapshots

Homemade Halloween cookies! Derpily delicious.

1. An irrefutably logical and highly scientific explanation for why my mom is always lost. October started with a snowstorm. The next morning, my mom opened her blinds and saw this oily body print on the window glass.

She insists that it was left by her Spirit Guide, which makes complete sense. My mom gets lost every time she leaves the house. No one else’s “Guide” would full-on splatter into a window.

Also, there were no dead Spirit Guides in the backyard, so whatever made this mark survived! Hallelujah!

2. I’m spreading like the plague. My own blog can no longer contain me. *Insert maniacal laughter here.* Two brave bloggers allowed me to guest post on their blogs in October. I had a discussion about the novel Dreamland Burning with Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction. And Shannon @ It Starts At Midnight kindly let me talk about my . . . um . . . unfortunate . . . mental health misdiagnosis on her blog.

3. Stuff happened on the Internet. In October, my blog reached 500 Bloglovin’ followers (thank you!), and my mom helped me set realistic goals for my future:

4. Happy 11th birthday to the monster under my desk! On Halloween, the little monster who lives under my computer desk turned 11. I can’t believe it’s been 11 years since I used a computer with my feet on the floor. She hogs all the foot space.

Books I Read

In October, I read 13 books. Don’t be too proud of me. Most of them were short books that I read during Dewey’s and Autumn Readathon. (Random tangent: Why do nonfiction books have such long subtitles? How am I supposed to remember these things? I can barely remember what day it is.)

The Stranger beside Me: Ted Bundy the Shocking Inside Story – Ann Rule
State of Wonder – Ann Patchett
Touching the Void: The Harrowing First-Person Account of One Man’s Miraculous Survival – Joe Simpson
The Stranger in the Woods: The Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit – Michael Finkel
The Edible Woman – Margaret Atwood
Escape from Eden – Elisa Nader
The Girl Who Drank the Moon – Kelly Barnhill
When Zachary Beaver Came to Town – Kimberly Willis Holt (reread)
The Haunting of Hill House – Shirley Jackson
Fatty Legs: A True Story – Christy Jordan-Fenton, et al.
All the Birds, Singing – Evie Wyld

My 2017 reading challenges have been updated, and I’ve conquered Goodreads!

  1. I totally agree with wondering why nonfiction books have such long subtitles. I just noticed that in the book I'm reading now - I'm just like, do I really have to list this whole paragraph every time I say the name of the book?

Your cookies look delicious! I'm so candied out right now - we had a good number of trick or treaters, but we still have so much candy left over.

    1. YES! Nonfiction books need to get their act together. I can’t remember those long subtitles.

  2. I loved the bit about the spirit guide! If I have one, she must be bored as I don't go out much!

  4. Those cookies look so delicious! Congrats on 500 followers on Bloglovin' and to making your Goodreads goal! Goodreads keeps telling me I'm behind one book, no matter how many books I read but I'm going to make it, I hope. You had such an amazing October. I wish you all the best for November! Happy reading!

  7. It's good to catch up on all I've missed! In October I read Alice Hoffman's "The Dovekeepers" (highly recommended), "The Shack" (i'm still pondering it) and a lot of stuff from the 16th Century.

    1. “Stuff from the 16th century” sounds intriguing. Most of the books I read are from this century.

  9. Okay, the cookies are now making me drool...LOL.

As for secret passages in bookshelves...I once lived in a house that had one behind my family room shelves. But it didn't go to more shelves, but into another room. It was odd. But my kids loved it!

Great October for you. I just bumped up my copy of The Grandmother book which has been hiding out on my Kindle since April 2016.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  10. Sounds like you had a good October! The cookies look yummy and the spirit guide post was interesting. I wish I could say that I read that many books in a month. I'm lucky to find time to read two. Have a great weekend!

  16. Happy birthday to your furry companion. :-) I miss having a dog around the house. If only I could talk my husband into letting me adopt another one. A coworker and I have talked about her sneaking one into my backyard under the pretense that it was lost and wondered in, but we haven't followed through with it. That poor bird! I am glad it seemed to have survived it's wrong turn.

Congratulations on reaching your Goodreads goal! It sounds like you had a good reading month on top of that.

I hope you have a great November!

  18. Those Halloween cookies look awesome!! And I hope that bird who left the print on your mom's window is fine. I still haven't read Turtles, but I'll definitely get to it eventually. Also, your dog is super cute, happy birthday to her!

    1. Thanks! I also hope the bird is OK. There were no dead birds around the house, so it lived long enough to fly away.

  21. *snort* your mom's poor, poor spirit guide, though! I hope s/he's OK!
And a bookshelf behind a door that looks like a bookshelf sounds like a great plan. I'm plotting to get a smaller fireplace so I can have more shelves in the living room. I wish I could have a room that's only mine, and where only books and dogs are allowed inside with me ;)
Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading.

  25. Oh, a secret library behind a bookshelf door is my dream too. Sounds so lovely. Your mom's spirit guide though--poor thing! I'm glad you liked Fatty Legs too. I keep trying to get my students to pick it up. I think I have like 4 followers, so 500 blows me away. Well done, and well deserved. As another commenter said, I always find something great--and a laugh--when I visit you!

I was glad to know there were no dead Spirit Guides in your yard! and that goal of a door where there is tonsa bookshelves is absolutely wonderful and I'm sure very realistic [Somewhere! there are many universes out there]! :)

  28. Happy birthday to your puppy! Mine turned 13 in October, but sadly his health has dramatically turned for the worse and we are fearing the call to the vet is coming. I would totally love a bookcase that moved to reveal a secret library. Someday I will have a room in my house just for books and reading.
