In My Reading Life

Last week, I read The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst. It's a cozy fantasy novel about a librarian who steals spellbooks from a burning library. She brings them to her childhood home on a remote island, but island life isn't easy. She has no food or money. Even though magic is illegal, she uses the spellbooks to make her vegetable garden grow faster. Then she starts using the spells to help her neighbors.

This book is adorable. Lots of whimsey. It's fairly low stakes, so it's not stressful to read. There's a romance, but it doesn't consume the whole plot. It's about a community of people (or creatures?) who are truly kind. They care about their neighbors and are always willing to help the community. They don't let anybody fail.

I enjoyed this book, but I think it could have been shorter because it's low stakes. The pacing feels off. Some parts drag, and other parts are rushed. That's my only complaint, though. I love this fantasy world. Bad things happen, but it never feels bleak.

Read it if you like cute books.

In The Rest Of My Life

Honestly, it's been extremely boring around here. Things that happened recently:

  1. I've been rotting on the couch and watching The Traitors. It's my current favorite TV show. I finished the newest seasons of Traitors US and Traitors UK. Now I'm watching Celebrity Traitors UK. I will never get sick of this show.
  2. I also watched Dirty Rotten Scandals. The first two episodes are about Dr. Phil. I knew that guy was sketchy.
  3. I've been watching a lot of TV because my brain is being dysfunctional. I have a consultation with a specialist this week. I'm also attempting to get vocational rehab because work has become way too challenging. I like my job, but I may have to find a new one soon. Finding a job is hard right now. I can't even get employers to answer my emails.
  4. Pizza and cookies.
  5. If you want to learn about gothic literature, please check out my post. I'm always excited to use my pretentious college degrees.

For Even More Pretentiousness

Take care of yourselves and be kind to each other. See you around the blogosphere!

  2. I actually do look up a lot of words for that reason (or to make sure I am using the right spelling of the word). Pizza and cookies are good things, I agree. Good luck with your personal and professional rehabbing. It's not easy and takes a lot of courage.

  3. Cozy and cute is what I crave right now, everything else is just so stressful.
I hope the consultation is useful.

    Wishing you a lovely week

  7. Maybe the brain troubles are something contagious. I seem to have the same problem.

  8. About a year ago I started looking for another job and only ever heard back from one. After 2 rounds of interviews, I obviously didn't get the job but they never told me. What the heck?! I do hope you hear back from some soon.
