Some Things Have Happened Since We Last Spoke

It's been a while since I wrote a proper narcissism post, so let's talk about everybody's favorite topic: Me! Here are 8 things that have happened in the last six months. They're not too exciting because, honestly, I've mostly just been working.

Some Things Have Happened Since We Last Spoke

1. I ran out of books to read. Way back in 2022, I decided to stop buying books until I finished all the unread books I owned. Well, it finally happened. I read all the things. For most of this year, I've been exclusively reading library books. Now I can't decide if I want to restock my shelves or stick to borrowing.

2. I survived the summer! Friends, I loathe summer. I hate being hot and sweaty all the time. I'm still working at a state park, and the summer tourist season is intense. I tried to get a promotion at work and failed. It's been exhausting. I'm ready for winter now, please.

3. Baby Brooklyn started first grade. She ran 12 laps in her school's fun run fundraiser. (A lap is 1/16th of a mile.) She's currently obsessed with Minecraft and expects me to know something about Minecraft. I think I understand approximately half the words she says because the other half is about video games. I feel old. Watching her play Minecraft makes me motion sick, and I have no idea what's happening in this game.

4. I have acquired a chronic illness. I did not expect this to happen and am not amused. I have seen more doctors in the last six months than I have seen in my entire life. I don't want to talk about it because nobody's here for whining, but I'm (reluctantly) learning to cope.

5. I started boxing lessons again. I've been taking lessons since 2022, but I needed a four-month break because of work and the aforementioned illness. My first lesson went fine. My second lesson was less fine. My back was so stiff that I could barely lift my arms, which is not ideal for boxing. At one point, the coach stared at me in horror and then walked away without saying anything. I'm pretty sure he was too scared to fight me. I'm a beast.

6. Am I a mountaineer yet? My only goal in life is to be involved in backcountry search and rescue. That's the whole reason I became an EMT. Since I live in Colorado, I need mountaineering skills before I wander into the wilderness to find people. I took my first-ever climbing lesson. There were ropes and harnesses and everything. It was scary. There's a lot of stuff you have to remember so nobody falls off the mountain. I climbed to the top of a 55-foot rock wall. That's 16.7 meters for all the meter people. My arms were shaking by the end of it because I have no upper body strength, but nobody died!

7. I'm extremely out of ideas. Since it's fall, my work hours have been reduced to part time. I can finally blog again! Unfortunately, I have zero ideas for blog posts. I've been book blogging for 12 years. I never expected I'd have to come up with 12 years of ideas. Tell me what to write about.

8. Nonfiction November! It's been years since I participated in Nonfiction November. Since I'm out of ideas for blog posts, I'm going to give it a try this year. Click here if you want to play along.

What have you done recently?

  2. I refuse to believe Baby Brooklyn is in first grade! Where does the time go?? So sorry to hear about your chronic illness.

  3. Wow, you’ve been blogging a long time! I hear you on running short of ideas. Sometimes I take note of what other bloggers talk about and put those ideas in a folder. Every so often, I might write a post similar to one of those (while giving the original blogger credit, of course).

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.

  4. Good for you for clearing out your TBR.

I’m sorry to hear about the chronic illness. I was diagnosed with one myself a few years ago. Tough stuff.

    Isn’t autumn a nice season?

  5. So sorry to hear about your illness but you are doing some great things--climbing, finishing your TBR pile, learning that generations struggle to communicate with each other, etc. It has been almost 40 years since I have climbed with ropes. Mostly, I have been working and trying to find a AWOL contractor.

  6. Wow. You finished all your purchased books? Good for you. Now go back and add up how much money you saved by using the library and I think the answer will come to you. I only buy books if I'm sure I will want to reread it. I save tons by using the library.

  7. My baby is in her last year of high school. I'm really not sure when that happened. It's not like I approved it. Even she doesn't believe it. I don't think I'll ever finish all of my owned books. Why? Because I keep looking at books when I go to the thrift store. Though I've gotten better about it, and only get books that are already on my TBR, or by an author I like (mainly Agatha Christie and Jenny Colgan).

  8. My goodness. You've had a lot on your plate recently. I'm so sorry you've been sick. (((HUGS))) You know, as a librarian, I will always suggest borrowing books instead of buying them. LOL. Happy Tuesday!

  10. Holy cow, you are my hero! I still have close to 200 unread books on my shelves (and I have been reading my own books!), but I am not there yet. It's hard to know if I would want to buy more unread books if I got them all read, but I have to say, the odds are good. I also love using the library. I am so sorry to hear about your chronic illness, they are not fun, and I am sorry you have to learn to cope with it.

  11. Wow! That's a lot of news! I've been barely part of the book blogging community practically since January due to politics and doomscrolling making it hard to focus on books and reading. I'm sorry about your chronic illness. I can sympathize, as my immune system is very poor, so I get sick a lot.
Congratulations on reading all the books you owned! That's amazing! I did cull some books last fall, but then stalled out and never finished going through all my bookcases.

  12. I love that you're learning new things like mountain climbing and boxing! I would never do either, lol, but good luck!
