The Sunday Post

In My Reading Life

I finally read Anne Of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. Somehow, I missed it as a kid. I understand why so many bookworms list this novel as a childhood favorite. The characters are adorable. I like the contrast between Anne's imagination and the Cuthberts' work ethic. Anne finds the most creative ways to get in trouble, but her adoptive parents never stop loving her. She always has a safe place with them.

Like many children's classics, this one is too episodic for my tastes. You know that Anne will make a mistake and learn a lesson in almost every chapter. It gets repetitive after 400 pages.

I still liked the book. It's very joyful. The characters will make you smile.

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy recently:

  1. I'm writing a Sunday Post! I haven't written one since May because I was too busy. Since it's fall, my work hours have been reduced. I can have a life again!
  2. Since I have more time for blogging, I'm going to participate in Nonfiction November.
  3. My favorite TV shows are back. I'm watching Survivor, Amazing Race, Great British Bake Off, and all the Halloween stuff on Food Network.
  4. I went rock climbing and learned I have very little upper body strength. Rock climbing is hard, but I did successfully climb a frighteningly high rock wall.
  5. After climbing rocks, I ate an excellent club sandwich.

It's Raccoon Girl Fall! Eat Garbage! Take Naps! Hiss At Strangers!

Take care of yourselves and be kind to each other. See you around the blogosphere!

  1. I've never read Anne of Green Gables. Welcome back to Sunday posting - it's about the only time I'm out. And yay for Raccoon Girl Fall!! I'm IN!!!

  2. I am watching both Amazing Race and British Bake Off and enjoying them though I think the cast of Bake Off isn't nearly as interesting as past casts (my favorite is Jasmine).

  3. I am glad you read and enjoyed Anne of Green Gables. Anne as well as her adoptive parents come across as a deeply flawed but delightful person (weren't we all?) and I love seeing how both Anne and her parents became better people because of their relationships with each other.

Hurray for posting on Sunday! And hurray for participating in Nonfiction November!

  4. LOL at the comic - the fall/Halloween obsession is a little odd from my perspective
I love all the Bake Off’s
I’m looking forward to Nonfiction November too

Wishing you a happy reading week

  5. I don't think I've ever read Anne of Green Gables either, although for some reason I have a memory of owning the book as a kid? I'm also enjoying Survivor and Amazing Race. I watched an episode of Great British Bakeoff with my niece a couple weeks ago. It was fun, I just rarely watch cooking shows. She loves them though! I wish she'd get back to some of the baking she used to do, lol. But middle school and cheerleading now is keeping her from that I think. Hope you have a good week!

  6. Rock climbing IS hard. My son did it for years when he was a teenager and much lighter. It's already amazing that you could do it! Well done!

  7. Yay for time to have a life again. Rock climbing sounds amazing, but I am sure I don't quite have the upper body strength I would need either. We are also watching The Amazing Race, just older seasons, LOL! Have a great week!

  8. My husband and I have been laughing about all the Pumpkin Spice things available right now like Pumpkin Spice Cheerios. Ha! I like pumpkin spice but not that much.

  9. It's spring here, but I much prefer autumn season-wise. Have a great week :)

  10. I'm glad your work has eased off and your Sunday Post is back! I really like Anne of Green Gables, but I get what you mean about the episodic nature getting repetitive.

  11. I am cackling over your Anne in a nutshell summary. It's true, but as you said, it a joyful book nonetheless. Good for you giving rock climbing a try. It is hard!

  12. I love Anne but I can see why it would be repetitive. I don’t have upper body strength either so I give you kudos for even trying! Have a great week.

  13. Yay for more free time! Rock climbing sounds exciting. I probably don't have much upper body strength either. I love that cover for Anne of Green Gables! I tried to read it once and gave up. There was a TV film adaptation I loved back in the 90s (?) though.

  14. Glad to see you back for a Sunday post!

I would absolutely be no good at rock climbing. I am, however, very good at watching Bake Off, whatever country it is from!

    Have a great week.

  15. I used to read AOGG annually, Aj. The nice thing is that now I feel I can skip all the narration and get right to the action and dialogue. Enjoy having more free time.

  17. My sister is sixteen years younger than me and she came to live with me when she was twelve. I have fond memories of reading the first three Anne books aloud to her. I did a group re-read of Anne of Green Gables a few years back and intended to keep going with the series, but other things always seem to get in the way of my series intentions. 📚

I hopped over to your Oldest Books and Fall Reads posts. 🐇

Have a great new week! 🙂

  18. “Raccoon Girl Fall” Ha! I love it! Nice that you’ll have more time to read and blog. The meme at the beginning of the post was cute.

  20. I have never read Anne of Green Gables. Rock climbing sounds scary. Hope you have a great week!

  21. I haven't read Anne of Green Gables. I too missed it in my youth and haven't rectified that yet. I read voraciously as a kid (and still do) but missed a lot of the books "everyone" read. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  22. I read Anne of Green Gables as an adult and thought it was very charming! I look forward to Fridays so I can watch British Bake Off!

  23. Anne of Green Gables is one of my favorite comfort books and I know I'm totally biased but I can't see any faults with it. Great job on rock climbing, btw, I've never tried but I've always admired people who do it!

  24. It's interesting that you describe classic kids' books as episodic - I never thought about it before, but that describes many of them really well.
