In My Reading Life

Bad news. My eyestrain came back. Then one of my eyelids swelled up like a water balloon. I have no idea why. Maybe I was rubbing it too much because of the eyestrain? I don’t know what’s going on, but I didn’t get much reading done. I switched to the audiobook of Sleeping Beauties by Stephen King and Owen King and listened to most of it. It’s okay so far. It’s about a plague where women’s bodies spin cocoons while they sleep. If someone removes the cocoon, the woman goes on a murder spree. I really want to know what happens when the women hatch! (Emerge? De-cocoon? I don’t actually know what it’s called when a bug comes out of a cocoon. *To Google!* Okay, Google says “Eclose.” That’s what it’s called. Look at me, learning stuff.) Like most Stephen King books, this one has too many characters and is too long. I’m getting impatient. I just want the women to eclose!

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. It was my birthday! I’m not happy about being another year closer to death, but I did enjoy all the fried chicken, cornbread, and cake I ate. (Eating that stuff probably put me 2 years closer to death . . . .)
  2. Playing in the snow with Baby Brooklyn. There was a blizzard last week. I guess it was the 4th largest blizzard in Denver history or something like that. I don’t live in Denver, but I’m close enough that we got A LOT of snow. It snowed for several days. Some of the snowdrifts were taller than me. It took me 2 days to dig out the cars, so Brooklyn had a lot of time to play with the snow.
  3. I signed up to get my COVID vaccine. I don’t have an appointment yet, but they’re vaccinating state government employees in the next phase, so I’m crossing my fingers I can get it.
  4. Speaking of work, I found out that I’ll be going back to work fulltime next month. That’s not great news for the blog because it’ll seriously cut into my blogging time, but I could use some money.
  5. I got a new watch. It’s a smartwatch, which means I can use it for work stuff and for marathon training stuff. It even gives me weather reports. How fancy is that?

  2. Happy birthday! Sounds like it was a good time! Man, I thought we got a lot of snow back at the beginning of February, but I think you guys way surpassed us!

  3. Happy belated birthday! It's always fun to indulge in some good food! I hope you can get the vaccine soon. My husband got his first dose on Friday but I'm not eligible yet. I'll probably one of the last people to get it in my state since I'm a stay at home mom. Happy reading!

  4. Happy belated birthday! I hope you can get your vaccine soon! I'm on the list for my state but can't find an open appointment so fingers crossed I can get mine soon too! Eyestrain sucks! I hate to hear you're dealing with that and I hope it can clear up soon.

  5. Happy belated!! I agree about Stephen King! I do love his books but,my gosh, does he get paid per word???? I personally feel his best writing is with the shorter stories. I much prefer being left wanting more after a book than wishing I could just be done already.(how many pages are in this thing?? That was me after reading The Stand....lol)

  6. Happy birthday 🥳
Your post just reminded me to put my reading glasses on since I’m squinting right now!

Wishing you a great reading week

  7. I also miss being with people in real life. Grocery store interactions just aren't cutting it. I hope you had a lovely birthday despite all the snow; that meme at the top is really funny!

  8. Happy birthday! I think your eye lid swelling could definitely be caused by a microtear from rubbing. I've had the same issue and it's awful. Audio books and a cool slightly damp cloth over your eyes is definitely the way to go if you can. Hope you have a great week!

  9. Happy birthday!!! Honestly, cornbread? Yum. I could eat that all day. I hope you had a good one. Boo on the snow though. And congrats on the watch!

I love that storm graphic- that made me smile. :)

  11. Happy birthday! That was quite a storm. I live in PA now, but grew-up in southern WY and still have a lot of friends in the area. Crazy. Hope you're eye strain gets better and those women eclose soon. Happy reading!

  14. Well, happy birthday! Sounds like you celebrated with all the best foods. Yeah for returning to work. Back at the park? The national parks I was at this past week (Grand Canyon, Arches) were popping! Hope your eyes feel better quickly. Eye strain/pain is the worst.

  15. Oh snow!! I wish! I'm just outside of Toronto and we have nothing at all! It's feeling more like spring than winter these days lol! Hope you had a fantastic birthday! Have a great reading week :)

  17. Happy Birthday AJ! I'm drooling at the thought of fried chicken, cornbread, and cake. That sounds like a pretty perfect birthday. :) I hope you'll be able to get your COVID vaccine shot pretty soon and that your eye strain lets up soon.

  20. Happy belated birthday ! And fingers crossed for the vaccine. The blizzard must have been awfully impressive to be in, it's already impressive just to read about it. Take care :)

  21. Happy Belated Birthday, AJ! I couldn't imagine having that much snow...and in March! At least, Brooklyn had fun playing in it. I hope that your eyes feel better very soon!

  22. The fourth largest blizzard in Denver history? That sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime event. I wonder if it's like the 1880 winter storm across the Midwest. And Brooklyn enjoyed it.

I'm very sorry to hear about the eyestrain. One of my biggest fears for my old age is that I get macular degeneration like my aunt. I hope they can figure something out.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Yes, a year closer to death, but also a year closer to real happiness. It only comes in old age.

  23. Happy birthday! I didn't miss having a big snowstorm this winter. We managed to dodge all the potential storms. Sorry about the eyestrain. Hope you are doing better now. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  27. Happy Birthday! I was SO jealous of the snowfalls I was seeing predicted - Estes Park was predicted to get 91 inches over the course of the storm, that is INSANE and I love it. Mostly because I am from Minnesota, where we had real winters. Not like this wimpy Nebraska stuff that is hardly even a winter.

  28. Happy Belated Birthday! Woah, that's a lot of snow. Glad you and Brooklyn had some fun with it though!!!! Yay for working full time again because of MONEY but boo to ruining your blogging routine! I feel that.

  31. Happy belated birthday. I hope full-time work doesn't get too much! I have a niece near Denver - she says they got a lot of snow. Are you near Grand Junction? I once lived in the state ... but not since like 1991. Enjoy your week.
