The Sunday Post #234
On The Blog Last Week
- On Saturday there was a book haul.
On The Blog This Week
- On Tuesday I talk about my favorite books of 2020 (so far).
- On Thursday I have a list of crime fiction for young adults.
In My Reading Life
I
randomly signed up for The Reading Rush Readathon, so I’ve been trying to focus
on reading instead of screwing around on Pinterest. I barely went on Pinterest
at all last week. *Pats self on back.*
Okay,
last week, I finished The Hunger by Alma Katsu. It’s the story of the Donner Party, but with witches
and supernatural zombie-wolf-human creatures. Mostly, I loved it. The beginning
is slow because there are a ton of characters that need to be introduced, but I
didn’t care. I’m fascinated by the Donner Party and have read a lot of nonfiction
about them. (For nonfiction, I recommend The Indifferent Stars Above and Cannibalism.)
I think it’s brave for an author to write a supernatural horror story about
real people. I’d be too paranoid about offending their descendants. If you like
historical horror, I recommend picking this book up. It’s a creepy, witchy,
surprising twist on a familiar story.
Then
I reread a childhood favorite: The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman. This is a sequel to The Golden Compass and was my favorite in the series when I was a
young teen. The series is about two kids who can open doors to parallel
universes. Chaos ensues. I liked The Subtle Knife because it was faster paced than The Golden Compass, and the vampire creatures gave me nightmares. I
loved rereading it. Five stars! My only criticism is that some events happen
too easily or conveniently. I didn’t notice that stuff as a kid.
Right
now, I’m reading Spectacle by Jodie Lynn Zdrok. It’s okay. It’s set in 1800s Paris and stars a psychic teenager who
is using her powers to track down a serial killer.
(Can
you tell I’m really into supernatural books right now?)
In The Rest Of My Life
Five
things that made me happy last week:
- I went hiking. I didn’t take photos because I went to this place again. Nothing has changed.
- New pizza restaurant! Of course I had to order some food. I’m a big supporter of pizza.
- The Reading Rush has been fun. I like chatting with everyone on Twitter.
- I spent 4 days away from the blog. I commented on other people’s blogs, but I didn’t look at mine. I didn’t work on any posts. I didn’t make Pinterest pins. I usually work on the blog every night, so ignoring it was a weirdly relaxing experience. I’ll probably regret my break when I’m scrambling to finish posts in the next few weeks.
- I like how much sci-fi/horror I’ve been reading. Even though the books are intense, it’s great to escape from the real world and deal with vampires and zombies instead of . . . the real horrors we’re experiencing.
I Like Friends!
Take care of yourselves and be
kind to each other! See you around the blogosphere!
The Hunger sounds quite interesting. I will have to take a look at it. I miss eating good pizza.
ReplyDeleteHappy readings!
Tânia @MyLovelySecret
I am impressed to see a new restaurant opening now. I hope the food was good (though, isn't pizza always ok?) Good job with the reading rush!
ReplyDeleteI am adding all of your horror/supernatural/Donner Party books to my list! I am fascinated by the Donner Party as well - it freaks me out but I feel compelled to read about it. And watch things about it. Have you ever seen the musical about it?
ReplyDeleteI was fairly absent from my blog this week, too. I'm still here and it's still there so I guess all is well. Pizza... just pizza. If I didn't have a weigh-in and a WW (virtual) meeting tomorrow I would be ordering me some pizza for delivery right now.
ReplyDeleteGlad you were able to walk through such beautiful scenery - and yay for pizza! I completely understand regarding the escapist reading - it's where I've been since lockdown, and I'm now writing all about a slightly dysfunctional dragon family... Have a peaceful, healthy week, AJ.
ReplyDeleteSci fi is a great genre and I've been learning more and more about it.theres going to be a sci fi film fest this tuesdayhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GO8VJkXcoiU at 5pm..pdt. I found it at https://www.meetup.com/IWantToDoThat/events/27208205
ReplyDeleteAnd its free!!!
Spectacle sounds really good. I'm a big supporter of pizza too. I think we're having that for dinner tonight. Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI really liked The Hunger, too. And that bra thing totally made me laugh. :D
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed The Hunger. I think I see things too clearly in my mind when I read about them or watch movies about them. Now and then I still think about the true story that Moby Dick was based on, and I just don't like those images of people sitting in a boat, slowly dying and going crazy. But---go figure---I do seem to like to read stories about terrible disasters (notably WWII) from the past that didn't involve a lot of cannibalism or slowly dying of thirst. I seem to think, Well, hey, at least we aren't confined to a bomb shelter every evening only to find our home has been blasted into oblivion the next morning.
ReplyDeletePizza has been an indulgence these days. My pizzas at home just aren't as tasty as those that arrive at my door.
Pinterest, I heard, has been having some problems with stats.
Have a good week and take care.
Ahhh I love Pinterest. The Hunger sounds good! Happy reading this week and great bookhaul. I'm watching The Handmaid’s Tale series now but haven't read the book.
ReplyDeleteI liked The Subtle Knife better than The Golden Compass as well! I recently reread the whole trilogy and was amazed at how well it held up.
ReplyDeleteWalking away from the blog is healthy AJ!
ReplyDeleteOoo the Hunger sounds good! I’ll definitely check it out.
ReplyDeleteI love the pic at the start, I stopped wearing a bra the day we went on furlough! No work, no bra!!
Yes for pizza! Surprisingly, we haven't been eating as much of it during quarantine - we should change that.
ReplyDeletePizza is the best! I'm looking forward to reading your best books of 2020 (so far) post!
ReplyDeleteThe Hunger sounds really good, I might check it out!
Have a great week!
My hubby and I have been going hiking at least once a week and find it helpful to our mental health. I only save recipes on Pinterest so I don't find my way to it very often. Have a good week. My Sunday Salon post where I try to focus on stuff I think is good news
ReplyDeleteHow have I not read The Hunger??? That is SO far up my alley! I'll need to pick that up soon. I definitely prefer horror to real life. I'm not sure what that says about me...
ReplyDeleteI usually feel like horror in the autumn season. Going to keep The Hunger in mind for later. Have a good week.
ReplyDeleteI had pizza today which was the first time since we started to Shelter in.. We had it delivered. The Hunger looks good- thanks for the review.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you just need to take a break and have pizza. Enjoy some great reads this week!
ReplyDeleteAnne - Books of My Heart Here is my Sunday Post
I really enjoyed Spectacle - and the sequel Sensational is brilliant. Happy reading.
ReplyDeleteOMG that meme is amazing hahah
ReplyDeleteThe Hunger looks wild ... as if what happened to the Donner Party wasn't scary enough! I also have read The Indifferent Stars book and there's another called Snow Mountain Passage .... oh I know the Donners! but it sounds like the Hunger might have too many characters .... hmm
ReplyDeleteI have kind of been doing the same with staying away from the blog aside from responding to comments and visiting others. I also tend to work on something blog-related every night after my daughter goes to sleep, and then read a little bit too. I am so far behind on reviews, but I also have a ton of great new books to read. It is the curse of book dragons I suppose. Happy Reading!
ReplyDeleteOoo... I look forward to both of your upcoming posts this week.
ReplyDeleteA lovely week to you & happy reading!
I saw a meme recently to the effect that we now know that a lo idiots will either be claiming the apocalypse is a hoax or that they won’t get bitten if they go outsiDe cause they aren’t that dangerous :)
ReplyDeleteWishing you a great reading week
I read sci-fi (though not horror) to escape the world too. Feels good to be away from this place!
ReplyDeleteI've been finding myself wanting to read more mysteries these days. It's real-life crazy, but it's not OUR real-life crazy and I find that it doesn't make me as emotional. LOL

A hike sounds so nice and isolated. I have Spectacle. I may read it depending on your review.
ReplyDeleteAlso I can't remember the last time I wore a bra, haha!
I agree with you about reading things other than the horrors of real life right now. I'm reading a lot of science fiction. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteThe Hunger does sound good, although I'm the same way. I always wonder about historical novels that inject a supernatural theme, or might offend descendants. I thought maybe it was just me haha. It does sound very good though.
ReplyDeletePizza is the best :)
For some reason I thought the Hunger was a dystopian novel. I didn't know it had witches and such.
ReplyDeleteWith my schedule it's hard to work on my blog daily so I try to catch up on weekends. Enjoy your reading week.
ReplyDeleteI am excited for your Thursday post. It's been a long time since I have read YA crime fiction and have been looking for a good list. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI've heard such mixed things about The Hunger. I'm never that good with slow starting books so I gave it a miss personally. I miss takeaway food! We used to get fish suppers, pizza, kebabs and curries from the same place but it's a complicated process now so we're not bothering!
