In My Reading Life

Pinterest has been stealing all my free time. I basically live on that site. Since I’ve been screwing around so much, I only finished one book last week. It was a good one, though! I read Alabama Moon by Watt Key. It made me laugh. The main character, Moon, thinks he can solve all of life’s problems by punching annoying people. I believe Twitter would call that #mood. If you love books like Hatchet, you’ll enjoy Alabama Moon. It’s an easy middlegrade read with tons of action. Moon has spent his entire life in the Alabama wilderness. After his father dies, he runs into problems with the local constable and goes on a quest to discover why his father abandoned society to raise his family in the woods. It’s an excellent book. I would have loved it as a kid.

Right now, I’m reading The Hunger by Alma Katsu. It’s the story of the Donner Party, but with witches and supernatural creatures. I think? I don’t know. I just started it, but I’m enjoying it so far.

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. Week 2 of at-home kickboxing with whatever random YouTube kickboxing videos I can find. I’m happy to report that I still haven’t accidentally punched my computer. Cross your fingers that the computer, the furniture, and I survive week 3. There’s not enough space in this house for kickboxing.
  2. I started a new running training program. It already sucks, but hopefully it will end with me being able to run faster. (The kickboxing is also supposed to help me run faster.)
  3. I’ve been watching a lot of food shows. I hate cooking, and I’m on a diet, but I find cooking shows relaxing. I can watch Food Network all day.
  4. I got new books! I’m super excited about them. They’ll be in my haul on Saturday.
  5. I had fun writing my crime fiction post. Thank you to everybody who looked at it! I’m actually thinking of writing a second post about crime books because I read a lot of dark stuff.

Hello, I Need Friends

  1. Lol... kickboxing! Best of luck that your feet and furniture survive - and that you find you can run faster, after all. I MUST get myself moving sometime soon. Just after lockdown, I plonked myself in my computer chair and haven't moved since. So I'm turning into a blog... Have a great week, AJ:)

  2. I was just thinking about kickboxing this morning. I am glad to hear it is going well for you. I hope you are enjoying all your pinning time. I had to give up Pinterest, because it was a blackhole for me.

  3. I don't cook, either, but I also love watching the Food Network!

  4. Hi AJ! Your crime fiction post was lovely, glad you enjoyed reading it! Moon isn't really my cup of tea, but sometimes books cross our paths and then they surprise us.

Good for you with all the exercise. I am very lazy with my ballet barre class the last 3 weeks. I can feel it and see it, LOL!!

Hope you will have a good week and get more reading done! Here's my The Sunday Post

  5. Just thinking about kickboxing scares me. All that kicking. All that boxing. I'm glad you are enjoying it, though. I'm more of a yoga sort of person.

I loved watching The Great British Baking Show. I wish I could find more like that. We don't have cable. Or regular tv. Just a Roku box and Netflix and Amazon Prime. Well, and PBS.

I'm pretty sure I'd love Alabama Moon. I just got a MG book from the library. It's Echo Mountain. I'm eager to read it, but I'm waiting until after Paris in July.

  6. I know two people that do boxing. it's good that people have places to store their energy.

  7. I thought The Hunger was an interesting take on the whole Donnor Party tragedy. And I love the dog with the masks at the top of your post. So funny! :D

  8. I love The Food Network but I also love to cook. It is one of my favorite things to do.
I always wanted to kick box but my knees said no.

Have great week, AJ! Happy Reading!

  9. I know there is never enough room when you do kickboxing at home! Once I nearly kicked my hubs in the belly while he was passing by LOL Let's hope that all this training will have you indeed running faster!

  10. Good luck with your kickboxing and running program!!! Can't wait to see what fun books you've gotten in the mail. :)

  11. Omg- I just couldn’t go into kickboxing.. I totally see myself getting hurt of slipping in one way or another. I also gotta say I chuckled of your note that the computer still remain un-kicked 😂 yep- something i’d totally do too! .. or kick one of my dogs, my female is pesky and always attempt to make me play when it’s time for exercice and she puts her ball right in my feets 🤦🏽‍♀️

I gotta say I love the personality of that MC of Alabama moon 🤣 I’m not quite sure of your description of the story, but I kinda wanna check it out nonetheless just for the solving problems with punching! Ahah

  12. At home kick boxing sounds like fun! I would almost definitely kick something though.

  13. I love watching food shows (even if most recipes have meat and I don't eat it). I also hate cooking, but they kinda inspire me to try something new. =P

    Happy readings!

  14. I used to do kickboxing but it was too intense for me. I love watching food shows and I'm watching too much Netflix- but wearing my mask when grocery shopping, staying home, and trying to stay safe.

  15. Sometimes I can't decide what makes me more angry, people who don't wear masks at all, or those who leave them on their chin for literally the entire time they wear them. Probably the second group because they are so close to being responsible, but are actively saying "Screw you!" to everyone around them. There were times early on where I accidentally left my mask at home and had to go into a store without one (and then I started leaving my masks in the car), but come on. Just be a good human and let's get this taken care of, right??

I am also going off to find the crime fiction post you talked about, because I have been reading more of that genre lately!

Good luck with the new kick-boxing routine, you will rock it!

  16. I’ve been on Pinterest a lot this week, I decided to make board covers using Canva so I have been gradually replacing them.

Good luck with the kick boxing!

  17. I've never tried kickboxing but I love biking. I'm out 3-4 times a week and this keeps the stress at bay. Enjoy your new books!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I especially love that you are a pinterest addict. I am moving to a new place soon and so I am using it to do some design of it. And boy I am addicted to it. Hope you have fun with your new books.

  19. Good luck with the kickboxing and running. I'm better with yoga and swimming and riding a bike. I love to cook and read crime fiction. Have a lovely week. Stay safe and be kind.

  20. I took a couple of kickboxing classes and really enjoyed them though when the movements got really fast I was a danger to myself and those around me! Running and I aren't friends but I love the idea of it. I LOVE Pinterest! Such fun and such a great time filler. Have a great week!

  21. I'll have to check out Alambama Moon. I'm always on the lookout for interesting MG. The Hunger looks good too. Same on Food Network. Chopped all day.

  22. Good luck with week 3 of kickboxing. I need to do some exercises which I keep saying and keep not doing. LOL I will eventually :) Enjoy your new books and have a great week!

  23. It is great to find something, anything, that keeps you engaged all day. Enjoy!

  24. Kickboxing and running? Wow, I'm tired just thinking about that. I find cooking shows relaxing too even though I also hate to cook. Cake decorating vids are a big time suck for me too. I stop and watch every time I see one on my FB feed.

  25. I'm supposed to run a half marathon in November so I should start up my training again, but it's too miserable in this heat. Plus, I kind of think it'll get canceled and moved again, which shouldn't impact my training but still. I would like to run faster. My times right now completely suck. Good luck with your training!

  26. New books are always good! You are doing better than me with your kickboxing and running.

    ReplyDelete
  27. So, you're channeling your inner moon to punch things? ;) Best of luck not breaking anything!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Both of the books sound really good! And that meme at the top is hilarious but sad since it is so true! My stepmom saw someone actually take their mask off in a store the other day to sneeze... :(

    ReplyDelete
  29. Here’s hoping you don’t break anything!
I enjoyed your crime fiction list, it’s a favourite genre of mine.

Wishing you a great reading week

  30. Wow! Taking on kickboxing and running at the same time is very impressive. I totally get the getting sucked into Pinterest thing. I do it, too, but with Instagram. Social media can be a real time stealer! Have you tried the Great British Baking Show on Netflix? I love it. Have a great week.

  31. Good luck with the kick boxing. I hope the computer continues to survive. Food Network is where my TV is tuned most of the time too despite my diet and penchant for salt-free cooking. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  32. Oooh! I'm impressed with your kickboxing---good luck on both you and your house (and computer) surviving it! :-)

  34. Kickboxing sounds exciting! I really need to start trying some news things to keep active, haha. Cooking shows are definitely relaxing. I completely missed your crime fiction post, so I think I'll have to head over and check that out next! Looking forward to the book haul!

  35. Try exercising in an RV! :-D Even Pilates and yoga feel risky! My set up is to have my laptop on the floor and cast the video to the TV so that I can see it whether I'm doing standing work or I'm down on the mat. I assume you're mostly (exclusively?) on your feet though. Good for you for staying active!

  36. I think if I tried to do kickboxing at home I would need more insurance. Also, it would make my dogs CRAZY! I'm gonna check out your crime fiction post now!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oooh The Hunger, I LOVED that book! I hope you are enjoying it! Also your fitness plan is pretty great, I am impressed and wish I had the gumption to do such a thing too! Can't wait to see your new books!

  38. I was doing a running training program, but it's on haitus because my toes are hurting. So I'm going to the gym and using the bike, lifting weights, and swimming a few times a week until I can resume.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Kickboxing sounds fun, but I definitely would have already broken my computer :)
I'm a terrible cook but I hope to get better some day and actually make some edible food :)
    Have a good week!

  40. What a cool premise for The Hunger. I think I own one by Katsu but not this one. I'll be interested to hear what you think of it.

  41. Aw, the correct way to wear a mask with a doggie is so cute! And sounds like a pretty great week-yeah for getting more books! Thanks for stopping by! Happy reading!

  42. You did a good job with the crime fiction list. Good luck with your workouts. I've read a couple books on the Donner Party but combine that with the supernatural? wowsa.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yeay for new books! Can't say I'm a fan with the running but I'll be getting on with that myself... I need my jeans to fit me again. :(

    ReplyDelete
  44. I can't believe there is a book about the Donner Party with witches! "What are they brewing in that caldron?" I don't think I want to know. :)

  46. I don't enjoy cooking but I seem to be addicted to shows about cookery competitions! I love watching them to relax!
