In My Reading Life
Reading wasn’t great last
week. I must have been distracted because I took forever to get through exactly
one book. I didn’t even love the book!
I read The Underground
Railroad by Colson
Whitehead. It was not
what I expected. It was marketed as an alternate history novel about a literal
underground train. There is an underground train in the book, but it’s a tiny
part of the story. Most of the novel is about an escaped slave who travels
around the US. Each city is its own unique dystopia. It’s an intriguing
concept, but I got bored because the structure jumps around too much. We don’t
spend enough time with each character to truly get to know them. Most of them
were just names to me.
Then I
started The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. This is a reread of a childhood favorite. It’s a science fiction story
about parallel universes and a community of nomads who are trying to rescue
their kidnapped children. I read this book many times as a teenager, but I’d
forgotten how slow the beginning is. I know the action will start eventually!
In The Rest Of My Life
Five things
that made me happy last week:
- New books! I love supporting small businesses, but it’s terrible for my bank account and TBR shelf.
- July 4 BBQ food. The official celebrations were canceled, but that didn’t stop me from eating everything.
- I made so many Pinterest pins for this blog. Most of them are ugly, but I’m trying really hard! Someday I will be successful at Pinterest.
- I have now done yoga every day for 5 months.
- I went hiking in the mountains with my dad. Yes, we did wear masks in the wilderness. I took some pictures too:
Stalk Me Everywhere (But Especially On Pinterest Because I Clearly Need Help)
Take care of yourselves and be kind to each
other! See you around the blogosphere!
Congrats on the 5 months of daily yoga! That's quite an accomplishment. My son and I did a nature walk and didn't wear a mask, now numbers are on the rise here so we must. Sigh. The feeling of going backwards is depressing me!
ReplyDeleteI love those photos of hiking in the mountains with your dad. We have started wearing a mask when we walk now, since our governor has mandated (finally!) wearing masks in public. It was hard to breathe yesterday. I think I'm going to make sure my mask is loose today when we walk.
ReplyDeleteI have hardly done yoga. It's one of the things I miss most now; I miss my yoga class at the Y. I made up my own routine for home, but I've only done it a few times. Maybe I could add my Paris music? Good for you on doing yoga for all those months.
I remember reading The Golden Compass at school with a group of sixth graders when I was a school librarian at a Montessori school in Houston. I had a little animal clipped on my shoulder. The discussions about the book were amazing.
Five months of yoga - I am fill with admiration! I NEED to put in place a daily exercise regime and so far haven't managed it. I love the pics of your hike with your father... Glad you enjoyed it so much and I hope you have a great week.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful hike! I listened to the audiobook of The Golden Compass, last year some time I think. It had a full cast recording, which was really cool. I never continued with the series, though!
ReplyDeleteHow nice that you and dad went hiking. My sister and her husband are becoming hikers during this mess. They used to spend their weekends in Atlantic City, now they are hiking. It's definitely healthier.
ReplyDeleteBeing out in nature is just sooo good for the soul. And so is yoga. Well done to you!
ReplyDeleteI've had The Underground Railroad on my TBR list for a couple of years. I just keep on passing it by. Maybe it really is time to clean house. But thanks for the update!
Hope you will have a good week, enjoy your yoga and reading!
Here's my The Sunday Post
The hiking looks gorgeous! We haven't spent much time outside lately but I love a good hike. That's great about the yoga. I love it and always feel better when I do it but have been really letting it slide. I hope you have a great week.
ReplyDelete5 months of yoga is an achievement! And I feel you on supporting businesses being bad for the wallet... But good for the soul. I've not been so bad on the books (we'll ignore the 50 odd added to the kindle thoughout the UK lockdown, lol) but I've been trying really hard to support local businesses that have slowly started re-opening and who maintained an online presence throughout. I've definitely spent more than I would have usually.
ReplyDeleteHiking sounds wonderful! I need to go walking in the forest more. It's been a couple of months.
Your hiking photos are gorgeous... I don't get enough forest time now that I live near the ocean! Congratulations on sticking with the yoga, too.
ReplyDeleteYour photos are beautiful. Enjoy the yoga for the next 5 months! I walk every morning for an hour and a half hour in the evening. My day is spent indoors mostly cooking and reading!
ReplyDeleteNice photos. Good job with hiking and yoga. I'm just eating everything. Enjoy your week.
ReplyDeleteAnne - Books of My Heart Here is my Sunday Post
Your hiking pictures are beautiful. Thank you for sharing them. I read the Golden Compass by Philip Pullman years ago. But only the first book. The rest couldn´t catch my attention. Can´t tell you why, though. Happy reading and stay safe and well.
ReplyDeleteLovely nature photos. When we hike, we wear masks to pull up if we encounter anyone else. My Sunday Salon post
ReplyDeleteI can't stand the thought of hiking with a mask on all the time but we do have them ready. They're either pulled down on our chins ready to pull up if we meet someone on a busy trail, or if it's really not busy, I'll just keep one in my pocket or carry it.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever actually finished the Golden Compass series. I remember when it was first published and I think I was just a bit on the older side for it (or so I thought at the time). I know I did read it and maybe the second one but I'm pretty sure I never read the last one. I need to revisit those one day. I do love fantasy. Enjoy your week!
I love your photos! It looks like it was a nice hike!
ReplyDeleteAnd I haven't reread the Golden Compass for years, although I remember loving it as a kid (although it's called Northern Lights here for some reason!). Maybe I'll have to reread it soon.
Have a great week! :)
Great photos of your hike!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads-up about the Book Depository.
Enjoy your week and your books, and thanks for visiting my blog.
Well done on the yoga, I need to be strict with myself and fit more exercise in to my routine.
ReplyDeleteYour hiking pictures look amazing, it is so nice to be out in nature.
Have a good week.
Oh wow- that's cool about Book Depository. Good to know! And yes to barbecue food. I can eat that stuff ALL DAY. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for your insight about Whitehead's book. I have heard of it, but never really knew what it was about. I am glad you and your dad were able to spend time in mountains. Being out in the wilderness is good for the soul. I hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteYou're doing so well with yoga. I really want to get into that. I keep saying it, but I don't do anything with it. Someday :) Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteThat Underground Railroad book does sound like a cool idea, that's too bad it didn't develop the characters more. That's awesome you've kept up with yoga every day for so long! And your photos are so pretty!
ReplyDeleteHiking in the Colorado mountains, while I sit here and sweat in the heat and humidity, sounds delightful
ReplyDeleteNice goal with the yoga! I have the The Underground Railroad on audio and didn't realize it was on different towns. I hope your week is amazing!
ReplyDeleteNew books always make me happy. And being in the wilderness too. I hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, those pictures are STUNNING. I'm glad you got to enjoy such a beautiful hike! Also, how do I own Underground Railroad and have such a wrong idea about what it is? I really thought it was realistic historical fiction about The Underground Railroad... It's clearly time for me to pick this one up.
ReplyDeleteThe Golden Compass was one of my favorite movies as a child and I hope to read the books one day!
ReplyDeleteFollowed you on Pintrest. I browse it now and then but don’t do a lot with it, you can find me under Shelleyrae
ReplyDeleteI hope you find something you’ll enjoy more to read this week!
Way to go on the yoga. Love the hiking pics, I was hoping to go hiking more this year but then fractured my ankle. So now I'm not able to workout like I used to. Hope you enjoy your reads and have a great week.
ReplyDeleteYour hiking photos are gorgeous and what a perfect thing to do these days, and yoga too, you go! Thanks for the info on the book depository. Have a great week :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE your hiking pics! Looks like you had amazing views!
ReplyDeleteNicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction
Congrats on your yoga accomplishment! That is great!!
ReplyDeleteAnd your hiking photos, wow!!
Regarding Pinterest, you are not alone. One day, I will also be able to make nice Pinterest pins. The mountains are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteTânia @MyLovelySecret
The Underground Railroad has been on my TBR. I appreciate your perspective though I still plan to read it and make up my own mind. You've inspired me - 5 things that made me happy last week - beach day with my nephew and dad for nephew's birthday, beach day by myself just because, Wadadli beer, a couple of client cheques - that I promptly had to put toward bills (but if I hadn't got them I wouldn't have them to put toward bills,so...), started a new story and bonus made a story submission I didn't plan to (and that's putting a bit of hope in to my writing journey lol).
ReplyDeleteLet me know how your adventures in pinteresting go!
ReplyDeleteSo you are now an expert yogi now AJ!!! And Colorado is so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI do want to figure out Pinterest too but it's taking a backseat for now. Maybe once you have it figured out, I'll stalk you to share all your secrets. ha! (just kidding!)
ReplyDeleteLove the pictures -- I wish we lived near a place we could hike once in a while, but it's mostly flat around here (and crowded).
I've been meaning to try Colson Whitehead's work, but something always just... doesn't click for me in the descriptions of what the books are about. Hmmm.
ReplyDeleteWow 4 months of daily yoga is a huge accomplishment!! Also, thanks for the heads up about the book depository deal-I will head there now!
ReplyDeleteooh beautiful photos! I hope you had a nice July 4th. I ate lots of good food too!!!

What a beautiful hike! I feel like I ate everything this holiday weekend too, and we didn't do anything either, lol! Underground Railroad has never captured my interest enough to pick it up. Sounds like that was a good thing. Have a lovely week, AJ! :)
ReplyDeleteA reading & walking post coming up this week? I look forward to it!
ReplyDeleteHere's to a better reading week!
Congrats on your yoga milestone!
