On The Blog Last Week

On The Blog This Week

  • On Tuesday I recommend some winter books.
  • On Thursday I review the books I read for Nonfiction November.

In My Reading Life

I finished Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia and adored it. It may have kept me awake until 2 in the morning because I wanted to know how it ends. Eliza is a whiny brat, but I think a lot of teens could understand her struggle to balance her in-person life and her online life. If you loved Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl, you’ll probably like Eliza and Her Monsters.

I’m not usually a mood reader, but last week I REALLY wanted to read a Stephen King book. I kept finding myself staring longingly at my Stephen King shelf. (Yes, of course his books have their own shelf in my house.) I didn’t want to get absorbed in one of his 500+ page chunksters, so I picked up Apt Pupil. I’ve read this novella several times. It’s about a creepy teen and an elderly ex-Nazi who torture each other to death. I love the slow way King builds tension. It’s excellent.

Right now, I’m reading Best-Loved Folktales of the World by Joanna Cole. I’m going to be reading this book forever. It’s 800 pages of eyestrain-inducing font.

In My Internet Stalking Life

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. Santa and his reindeer visited a playground near my house. We took Brooklyn to see them. That’s my sister and Brooklyn at the top of this post. The baby was more interested in eating candy canes than in visiting Santa. That’s how I know the baby is related to me. We’re both sugar-seeking missiles.
  2. Pizza.
  3. Shopping for my Secret Santa. I hope she likes her gifts.
  4. I started running again! If you read my wrap-up, you’ll know about my unsurprising injury. I think it has finally healed. It only hurts when I poke it.
  5. Thanks to everyone who has entered my giveaway!

  1. The weather here is pretty wild-one of the winter storms coming through this weekend, so I'm not budging from beside the warm fire during the day! I'm in a mad reading spell and trying to watch a few films where time allows.

  3. I've had Eliza and Her Monsters on my TBR for ages and just haven't got to it yet. Love the pic at the playground. I want to see snow!!! Wonder how far north I'd have to drive to find some...

  4. Glad to hear you've been able to start running again. Eliza and Her Monsters has been on my TBR for a while now so I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it. I really liked Fangirl so hopefully I'll enjoy this book too. :)

    1. My question was the same. you always think reindeer are fictional creatures until you see one up close. pretty awesome!

  8. I love reading your posts. I read mostly ebooks now due to both the eyestrain-inducing fonts plus the back-breaking boxes of books which already fill my 19 bookcases to overflowing. We still have Halloween candy so we're good until I bake Christmas cookies. Have a wonderful week!

  9. You definitely have five things to be happy about this week. Deny it all you want, but there is nothing like a baby to make a happy holiday.

It looks like you had a great reading week. I really didn't finish anything. I hope this week will be a better week.

    Have a good one.

  10. OMG that reindeer is just too cute AJ! And running is great...as long as you don't injure yourself indeed. Have fun next week!

  11. My daughter is also a sugar seeker, perhaps you are related to her as well. LOL! I loved Eliza, and I am happy you liked the book too, because it hurts my heart, when people I know hate books I loved.

  12. Aw, how fun your niece got to see some reindeer, but that's hilarious she was more into the candy than the reindeer. I still need to read Eliza and Her Monsters - glad you loved it.

  17. REINDEER!!!!

I am pretty sure I wouldn't be able to read that King. Or rather, I would, and I wouldn't be able to put it down, but then it would continue to haunt me forEVER. I'm still hung up on some of his short stories that I read in high school. I really liked Made You Up, so I've been meaning to read Eliza and Her Monsters ever since it came out. That was just a few weeks ago, right?

  18. Apt Pupil is one of the few King’s I haven’t read.
How fun to see a reindeer in the snow, it’s a little hot for them here today, about 100F

Wishing you a great reading week

  30. I would have done the same. Why pay any attention to Santa when there is candy? *smile* Thank you for sharing the beautiful picture. The books you wrote about are new to me, but I am familiar with Stephen King, although I am not reading Horror. Have a great week and happy reading.
