In My Reading Life
Nonfiction November is over! I
managed to read 7 nonfiction books last month. I think that’s pretty okay.
During the Black Friday Readathon, I finished Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything by
Lydia Kang and Nate Pedersen. It was funny. I learned a few things about the
unfortunate history of medicine. I think there are too many jokes in the book.
They became distracting.
I also finished Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith, and
Family by Gerrard Conley. It’s a compelling story, but I can tell that it’s
the author’s first book. It’s overwritten. It reminded me of the stuff I read
(and wrote) in college writing workshops.
Right now, I’m reading Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca
Zappia and Best-Loved Folktales of the
World by Joanna Cole.
In The Rest Of My Life
Five things that made me happy
last week:
- Thanksgiving!
- I’m listening to Christmas music right now. It’s after Thanksgiving, which means that Christmas music is officially acceptable.
- I spent Black Friday participating in the Black Friday Readathon. It was fun. Thank you to all the hosts.
- I have a friend who wants something with foxes on it for Christmas. I went on Etsy and typed “fox.” Do you know the first product that came up? A fox tail butt plug for BDSM sexual encounters. Um . . . . We don’t have that kind of friendship, Etsy! Jeez. I did laugh really hard, though.
- Thank you to everyone who has entered my giveaway!
Let’s Be Friends (But Maybe Not The Type Of Friends That Etsy Suggests)
Take
care of yourselves and be kind to each other! See you around the blogosphere!
Quackery is on my TBR :)
ReplyDeleteWishing you a great reading week, sans fox tales ;)
I am DYING about the fox / Etsy thing and then your "Let's be friends (but maybe not the kind of friends that Etsy suggets)" Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!
ReplyDeleteI missed out on the Black Friday readathon!!! That one is new to me.
Yay Christmas music time!!!
Have a great week!
Seven non-fiction books is more non-fiction books than I have read in the last 5 years. Therefore, I think it's a job well done. I loved Eliza. I hope you enjoy that book. OMG, Etsy! Hilarious! If you are still looking, Modcloth sells tons of fox items.
ReplyDeleteI'm dying to read Eliza and her Monsters. I hope you are enjoying it. :) That Etsy/fox situation was weird and yet funny.
ReplyDeleteHappy readings!
Tânia @MyLovelySecret
I think 7 nonfiction books is fantastic.
ReplyDeleteOMG AJ that "fox" find is too funny!!!!! LOL I also should listen to Christmas Carols from now on!
ReplyDeleteYour giveaway is wonderful. It's a great way to end the year.
ReplyDeleteYour reviews are brave and honest. I like to know the flaws of a book before I spend money on it. In my reviews I tend to focus on the strengths of a book and omit any criticism.
Good job on Nonfiction November!
Off to get out the Christmas music right now....Have a great week. And it's not too late to join in the Thankfully Reading Weekend BINGO game.
Oh, my, I am on Etsy a lot and have never come across something like that before! Yikes. Some stations near us were playing Christmas music even before Thanksgiving, but yes, I agree, it's acceptable now!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Eliza and 7 books in a month is impressive, nonfiction or not. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteNatflix&Books
7 books for your non-fiction November sounds awesome! I don't read much in the way of non-fiction nowadays but when I do it's usually historical fiction. The Quackery book sounds like something I'd probably enjoy. The history of medicine was a module I studied at university and found it fascinatingly horrible, lol.
ReplyDeleteHope you have another good week!
The Etsy search made me laugh way more than it should have. I had no idea you could buy such thing on there! Great post.

Quackery sounds like an interesting book. There has been a red fox that occasionally comes up on my back deck, do you me to try to catch him for your friend :)

Okay, I simply cannot stop laughing about your Etsy search. That is priceless. And takes friendship to a whole other level. LOL
ReplyDeleteI love reading your posts! You have such a great sense of humor. I am glad you did so well with nonfiction. I read nonfiction when I am researching / learning about something. But otherwise I read fiction for fun. In fact, I don't read much historical fiction because it sends me into a spiral of trying to find out the "real" facts of that time period / people and reading a bunch of nonfiction.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely week and happy reading!
Anne - Books of My Heart Here is my Sunday Post
Yes... I think you're right about it being now appropriate to listen to Christams music. The decorations in town were put up before half term in October - that is way too early! Have a great week, AJ:)
ReplyDeleteWow Etsy, that's very forward of you lol. Yikes!
ReplyDeleteI am officially enjoying Christmas music now. :)
Wow, I never would have guessed that kind of thing was even sold on Etsy. LOL!
ReplyDeleteBefore I started blogging, I used to read only nonfiction. I really should read more of it. I'm shooting to at least read four business/leadership books in 2020.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing these. Christmas music is on here, too!

Omg! Lol on the ETSY find! Hope you find something foxy a little more "friend" appropriate! You'll have to let us know what you come up with. I think it'd be a challenge. :)
ReplyDeleteGood luck finding an appropriate fox gift. Thanks for the laugh. My weekly update
ReplyDeleteOMG Etsy! You got through a good swag of NF in fiction. Enjoy the Christmas music, its fun and uplifting.
ReplyDeleteAah I'm happy you're reading Eliza, it's one of my favorite books. I hope you'll love it :)
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week <3
I kind of boycotted all things Christmas until after Thanksgiving and now I feel rushed because it fell so late and there's only three weeks. I really wish I liked non-fiction more. Unless it deals with serial killers or dogs, I usually don't pick it up!
ReplyDeleteOh my god...*shakes head at Etsy* That's hilarious! I wanted to read more for Nonfiction November, but alas, I did not. Oh well, I do have a couple I hope to read soon!

I laughed at your Etsy encounter. Thanks! Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on doing so well with NN! I was pleased to get it done too. I'm still in a non fiction mood so I'll keep on with them!
ReplyDeleteWow, Etsy! Too funny though! :D
ReplyDeleteI'll have to remember the Black Friday Readathon for next year!
Happy reading!
OMG, I can't believe Etsy!!!! Hahahaha. You did great on Nonfiction NOvember.
ReplyDeleteI love Thanksgiving! The food! The family! The friends! The fun! So many Fs to look forward to. ;) We spent Friday putting up lights and buying a fake tree (we've always used real trees in the past, but the pets have not treated them well), and listened to holiday music the entire time! I really love this time of year. <3
ReplyDeleteI feel like you should totally get your friend the fox butt plug as a gag gift! Etsy recs, right? ;)
Lindsi @ Do You Dog-ear? 💬
LOL!! Your Etsy encounter really made my day!! Hahaha.. I'm still laughing!!
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. I've been listening to Christmas songs too!
Have great week and happy reading!
The Black Friday Readathon sounds like fun. Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteThat Etsy thing is a little disturbing! I spent Black Friday at my mother-in-law's in Arizona winning NaNoWriMo, but that's a good idea. Looks like you got a lot of nonfiction read. That's awesome!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing about your hilarious Etsy search. LOL I really needed that laugh.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
Oh my gosh at the Etsy mishap! Lol. I've actually had that same thing happen before. I happen to also really like foxes yet do not particularly want that product either. I hope you were able to find something for your friend! :)
ReplyDeleteThat Etsy search had me dying! Too funny! Etsy is a dangerous and entertaining place sometimes. Good luck finding something else fox related for your friend! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteYou´ve read way more books than I have in November that´s for sure. Etsy is my place when I look for a new blog template. But your Etsy story made my day! Thanks a lot for making me laugh - it was so good to feel a bit lighter and happy. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I wouldn't imagine that a butt plug would be an appropriate gift for a friend. Lol. Congrats on reading so many non-fiction books in November!
ReplyDeleteAhhhhh, etsy. You never know what you'll get when you search there! Lol.
