The Back To School Tag

In my part of the world, the kids are back at school, so now is probably a good time for the Back To School Tag. This tag was created by Jenny @ Jenny Unscripted.

The Back To School Tag

Language Arts

An author whose writing style you like?

Margaret Atwood is my favorite writer. She has a way of describing things that makes me “get” them. Even if she’s talking about something I’ve never experienced, she can make me feel like I’m there. I also seem to enjoy books written by dudes named Mark. Marcus Sedgwick and Markus Zusak are my current favorite “Marks.”

Math

A book that frustrated you?

It’s funny that the tag creator also finds math frustrating. Guy, I hate math. I came very close to failing my math requirements in high school, and I actually had to transfer colleges because I couldn’t pass the math classes at my first college. I’m really that bad at math.

But, we’re talking about books. If a book gets too frustrating, I give up on it. Recently, I’ve given up on these:

Science

A book that made you think or question things?

Ideally, every book should do that. I like to think and question things. In recent years, the most thought-provoking book I’ve read is Most Dangerous. It’s about White House leakers. I highly, highly recommend reading it. It’s nonfiction, but it’s not dry at all.

A more-recent thought-provoking book is Cannibalism. Cannibalism is not a topic that crosses my mind often. (That’s probably a good thing. I don’t need to be creepier than I already am.) This book taught me a lot about human history and how accusations of cannibalism have been used to oppress people.

History

Your favorite book from a different time?

How am I supposed to choose favorites? Historical fiction and futuristic dystopias are my favorite genres. Can I just pick The Ghosts of Heaven by Marcus Sedgwick? That book is set in the past and in the future.

If we’re narrowing it down to books I read in 2018, my three favorite historical novels are Salt to the Sea, The Smell of Other People’s Houses, and The Butcher’s Hook.

Art

Your favorite book with pictures?

I haven’t read many books with pictures this year. Why are graphic novels so expensive? One of my all-time favorite books with pictures is A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. The story is brilliant, and the pictures are better than brilliant.

Drama

A book you want as a movie?

I can’t decide between these two. Salt to the Sea would be harrowing. Gentleman’s Guide would be hysterical. I’m leaning toward Gentleman’s Guide. Get on it, movie people.

Lunch

Food from a book you want to try?

Well, the obvious answer is Harry Potter. I want to eat at Hogwarts! The characters eat strange British food, and I don’t know what some of that stuff is, but I still want to eat it.

For a less-obvious answer, let’s go with A Thousand Perfect Notes. The characters somehow find healthy food that tastes good. I need to eat this witchcraft! I’ve met very few healthy foods that taste good. I’d describe most healthy food as “tolerable.” My favorite meals are either 90% cheese or 90% sugar.

Bus ride home

A book you find relaxing?

Is it weird to say that I find Stephen King books relaxing? It’s probably weird, but I’m going to say it anyway. School was traumatizing for me. During lunch, I’d hide from the security guards and read a King book instead of eating in the cafeteria like a normal human. That’s how I relaxed.

Extra credit

A book someone recommended that you actually liked?

There are so many! You guys constantly recommend books to me. Usually, I like them. I was surprised by how much I loved Snow Falling on Cedars and Fatty Legs. I think they were both recommended by Wendy @ Falconer’s Library. Head over to that blog for excellent book recommendations.

  1. I have no idea why I haven’t read Salt to the Sea yet. I enjoy historical fiction and WW II-era is my favorite time period to read about. Plus, everyone I know that has read it raves about it. Sooo... I have zero excuses as to why it hasn’t happened yet. I love seeing you mention The Gentleman’s Guide being made into a movie because I can so see it! I’m reading it right now and I swear it’s like I’m watching a live action version in my head as I’m reading. Monty’s antics at the palace in Versailles, the (not really) highwaymen, all the tents set up for the fair in Marseilles... I can totally see it all!

    1. Gentleman’s Guide would be the best movie. Why has this not happened yet? I’ve been pushing Salt to the Sea on everybody lately. I think it’s the best book I’ve read this year.

  3. Fun tag. I do really like historical fiction, though I tend to read WWII era fiction. I still need to read Salt to the Sea - and A Monster Calls. I LOVE Gentleman's Guide and it would make a fantastic movie!

  4. This is a fun tag! I might just steal it myself. Math frustrates me as well, so I appreciate that the tag creator feels that way as well. Your explanation on why Stephen King books are relaxing makes so much sense to me. Gentleman's Guide would make such a fun movie!

  7. Sometimes you scare me, like when you say you find Stephen King books relaxing. Every time you talk about it, I remember that I still want to read The Smell of Other People's Houses.

  9. This is so fun! I won't lie, some of the Harry Potter food sounds... weird? Like what even IS pumpkin juice?! No thank you please. I agree, Ghosts of Heaven was awesome because it traveled to such a huge variety of times. Smelly Houses was great too.

    1. I think you can get pumpkin juice at one of those Harry Potter theme parks. I know you can get butter beer. (I don’t know what that is, either). Even though they both sound gross, I’d try them.

  10. This sounds like a fun tag! Honestly, most people ASSUME I can do math but at some point in high school I started excelling in English, NOT math... And I struggled with it. I think part of it is blogging and the other part is not having the time to do the extra work required in math (especially since weren't required to do the homework if we weren't able to.

    1. You didn’t have to do homework? That’s awesome. I think most of my childhood was spent doing massive amounts of homework.

  12. This is such a fun tag. I can't believe I haven't read anything by Margaret Atwood. People keep talking about how marvellous her writing is and I have yet to experience it. It's official: I'm buying Salt to the Sea. I can no longer be part of the group of people who hasn't read this powerful story.

    Happy readings! ;)

  13. Just completed my version of the tag and posted it! The Book Thief was beautifully written and I cried so much at the end! I'm dreadful at maths too and I hated it at school. I never saw the point to all that trig crap! Yes to Hogwarts for lunch!

  15. I really need to read Salt to the Sea! I've read her other book, Between Shades of Gray, and was emotionally destroyed. It was the ultimate book hangover, and I could only read fluffy romances for weeks.

  16. Haha, I love how you find Stephen King books relaxing! But honestly, I get it. He uses such detailed descriptions and character-portrayal's in his novels that it's easy to get lost in them and forget about the real world. The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue would be such a fun movie!!

    Great post!

  17. Ooh, thanks for the shout-out! I was just pushing Fatty Legs at some of my colleagues the other day too. They were talking about the need for diverse literature that was as much about joy as oppression (avoiding One Story), and even though some awful stuff goes down in that book, I love the way the author continues to resist.

I still really want to read Butcher's Hook and Ghosts of Heaven, based on your reviews.

  20. I had the first five chapters sampler of Ghosts of Heaven from Netgalley, and I loved it. I keep forgetting to look for it on Overdrive and Hoopla so I can read the rest. I need to start a list for books I've been reminded about on other people's blogs. 📚

The Smell of Other Peoples Houses was my top book for 2016. I was a bit upset that the 1970s is not considered Historical Fiction, though. Ha ha. 📘✨

My son changed his major from Biochemistry to Cellular Molecular Biology to get out of his last four math credits. ha ha. The funny thing is for the field he wants to go into both degrees are equal in standing to get a job, so go figure. ☺

  21. You are definitely weird for finding King books relaxing. ;) But I agree, The Green Mile was an incredible read. I would also love to try food from Hogwarts (those buffets!!) and the healthy delicious cake in A Thousand Perfect Notes definitely had me intrigued. I might try some of Joey's food just out of curiosity...

  22. I think the Gentleman's Guide would make for a greta movie! I would so watch it. And I would like to watch an adaption of Salt to the Sea as well although I might cry myself a sea afterwards. I am glad you enjoyed it so much. Oh, I have A Monster Calls now but it's not that edition - I hope it still has the illustrations though!
