The Sunday Post #166

Voted "Best Blog" in 1864.

The Sunday Post is hosted by The Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to recap the past week, talk about next week, and share news. It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? is hosted by Book Date. I get to tell you what I’ve read recently.

On The Blog Last Week

On The Blog This Week

  • On Tuesday I mini review two young adult books.
  • On Thursday I wrap up September.
  • On Saturday I mini review some spooky (?) novels.

In My Reading Life

Last week, I finished Ghostland: An American History in Haunted Places by Colin Dickey. It was okay. I like that the author dives deep into sociology and tries to figure out why Americans are so obsessed with ghost stories. I didn’t always like the author’s tone. (I sounded like my mother right then. “I don’t like your tone, mister.”) He gets condescending toward some of the people he interviews. I have the (possibly wrong) impression that he always thinks he’s the smartest person in the room.

Right now, I’m reading The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah. I love it! It’s taking forever to read because it’s huge, and because the main character’s parents keep pissing me off. I can only handle them in small doses.

In My Internet Stalking Life

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. Pizza!
  2. It’s for-real fall now. It’s cold! I’m wrapped up in a blanket.
  3. A bunch of my favorite authors have books coming out in the next few weeks. I’m going to be broke and drowning in books. (Which is pretty much how I always live, to be honest.)
  4. I made fruitcake, and it wasn’t disgusting!
  5. I wrote my 1000th blog post. This is what 5+ years of blogging looks like. (Haha, please send help. I’m so tired.)

  1. Thanks for the mention! And oh yes, pizza always makes a week good! It sounds especially good when I'm branching out into doing some cooking...if it goes wrong we might need takeaway pizza!

  2. Oh that blogger stat post was interesting!! I really need to get to the Kristin Hannah book. Yay for pizza, for real fall and your 1000th blog post. Have a great week!

So excited that you're loving The Great Alone. Hannah is practically an auto-buy author for me and she just never disappoints. I wish it was for-real fall here. We're still hitting the 90's. Ugh. I want to be wrapped in a blanket, too. *sobs*

  7. I've been wanting to read Ghostland! I love ghost books although they scare the heck out of me. I am brave until the middle of the night...

It's cold here today. I caved and turned on our heat. :)

    1. Well, Ghostland isn’t scary, so you don’t have to worry about reading it in the middle of the night.

  8. AHHH 1000th post, wow, that's such an incredible accomplishment! I'm around 660, I think, with almost four years of blogging, so I'm looking forward to reaching that goal too.It means nothing, really, but... it's also so much fun to see how MUCH you've been writing on that blog, isn't it :)
    I hope you'll have a lovely week!! <3

  9. Pizza is always a good idea. Yeah, it's bothersome when the author has a bad attitude in their writing. I love ghost books, but when the author is crappy, it doesn't exactly help.

    1. I felt like he was judging the people he interviewed. If he was going to dismiss them and not listen, why is he writing this book?

Fall weather can't come soon enough for me. At least it has cooled down some. I'll take mid-seventies over mid-nineties any day.

  14. Pizza always makes me happy :D Congrats on 1,000 posts! I'm loving this fall weather too. SO. MUCH. Have a wonderful reading week! Real-life ghost/haunting stories are so much fun! Too bad this one wasn't great. I have so much love for The Great Alone! I agree about the parents, but without their tumultuous relationship and difficulties, the book wouldn't be so richly layered :)

  20. Congrats on five years of blogging. The Great Alone was a book club this month, I didn't get a chance to read it. All club ladies did comment on how terrible the parents were, especially the father. Glad you like it. I may read it one day. Enjoy your week.

  38. Ghostland was so disappointing for me! I expected to love it so much that I pre-ordered it in hardcover but ended up DNFing it. I think part of the issue was that my expectations were so high. I definitely agree about the author thinking he's the smartest person in the room. I got that feeling too. Cold weather already! We're down to not always boiling outside but I'll take it. Cold sounds actually kind of nice at this point and I can't stand cold!
