FF Friday: In Which I Make Important Decisions

Feature & Follow is a weekly blog hop hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read.

This week’s question: How do you decide what books to read?

Answer: It’s surprisingly complicated. First, I look at the synopsis and reviews. If the synopsis is intriguing and the reviews are mostly positive, the book gets written down on my TBR list. Usually it stays on the list for a few months, but some books have been on there for years. It’s a big list. I think there are about 140 books on there right now.

Next, when it’s time for me to buy more books (approximately once a month), I go through the list and remove the books that no longer appeal to me. Then I go comparison shopping. I check a bunch of different websites and stores to see if I can find cheap copies of my list books. If I can find a list book on sale or used, I buy it. I usually also buy a few full-priced books that I really want to read. If school is forcing me to read something, I have to get that, too.

Once I have the physical books, they go on my TBR shelf. There’s no method to how I read books from the shelf. I just grab one whenever I want.

So, that’s my process of deciding what to read.

  1. My way used to me more complicated. I have 600-something books in my Kindle's TBR folder (ones that I already own, that is) and 25-30 physical books on my TBR shelf in one of my bookcases. So trying to decide what to read was always a long process.

But last week-ish I noticed a blogger friend posting something about a site called Litterally.io and I joined up. They have this neat thing they call their "TBR Challenge" where the site picks 2 books from your TBR list at random and you go through clicking which one you'd rather read until you find a book you want. Gives you the cover image and description right there so you don't have to go looking. I think this just made my life a lot easier! *laughs* Even if I do have to go through and add all my TBR books now.

As far as picking which books to actually buy to be added to my TBR piles, I have a Wishlist on Amazon for Kindle books. And then I use eReaderIQ to tell me when the price drops on them. If the book gets cheap enough, I buy it and add it to my pile. For physical books, I SHOULD make lists but never do. I just go into the bookstore and look for new books by favorite authors that I don't own yet, as well as whatever else catches my eye on that trip.

  2. As you can see from my latest post, I am such an emotional reader. I like to pick up whatever tickles my fantasy. The blurb will usually grab me, I'll buy it--and figure it out from there.

    Happy Friday!

  3. I'm a mood reader, but I read my ARCs first and then read what I want. It's simple, and I like it. New follower via Bloglovin'. http://angreads.blogspot.com

  4. I read mostly eBooks, so I essentially just scroll through my Kindle and see what appeals to me. I read my ARCs before my personal purchases though.

  5. Lol! I have over 1000 books on my TBR. HAHAHA! I will never catch up. Never. It kind of makes me sad. I should definitely take your advice and start clearing out books that no longer interest me. (:

    Here's my FF!

  6. My TBR endlessly grows too! I usually just pick out a random book from my TBR in Goodreads, though.

Thanks for dropping by! Have a great weekend :)

  7. love your method...just grab what you want. That is great. What I like to do is keep a spreadsheet...of my ARC and my TBR pile and try to read both old and newer books. I like a bit of variety. Hope you are enjoying your weekend. Happy Reading. Old follower!!

  8. I think it is good that you try and remove the books that no longer appeal to you and try to find the ones which do in the end! It seems like you narrow down your next read to the books you are going to really enjoy.
