Top Ten Tuesday: Hyped 2017 Release Failures

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is ten 2017 releases I totally meant to read, but didn’t. Since I have so many reading failures, I’m just going to focus on the books that had some hype surrounding their releases. Why didn’t I read them? Time, laziness, long waitlists, lack of money, other books that looked more interesting. I’ll get to them someday. Probably. Maybe.

2017 Hyped Releases I Failed To Read

Update: I managed to read A Conjuring of Light at the very end of December! Hooray! I’m slightly less of a reading failure!

Which should I read and which should I avoid?

  1. Dear Martin and A Gentleman's Guide are really good!

  2. I haven't read any of them so I can't help you there! I don't read many new releases as I'm always playing catchup!

  3. I haven't read any of these, either! Gentleman's Guide is on my TBR, though. I always seem to be the last person to read a hyped book!

  4. Almost all of these are on my list and the only one I read was the Inexplicable Logic of My Life. Which I enjoyed.

  5. So with you on The Gentleman's Guide. It's on my list, too. I'm still waiting for someone to pay me to stay home and read all the books.

  6. Dear Martin - It's a quick read, but it's SO powerful.

  7. I missed all these, too!! I really want to get around to Gentleman's Guide and Dear Martin, most.

  8. I missed most of these too, I loved ACOL but that's the only one on your list I've read! Our Dark Duet and All The Crooked Saints were both on my list this week too.

  9. This is a good way to narrow your list down. I haven't gotten to any of these either, although several I do want to read. Someday. And Yay for finishing one before the year was out!

  10. I did try to read A Gentlemen's Guide but I couldn't get into the audio for some reason so I put it to the side. I was approved for the ARC of Dear Martin but I just didn't get to it. I did read Our Dark Duet but it honestly was memorable to me and that really made me sad because everyone loved it and I was the black sheep. All the Crooked Saints and The Inexplicable Logic Of My Life are ones I hope to get to this year.

  11. Dear Martin was the last book I read in 2017 and I really liked it. I think it was a fair portrayal of both sides of the race issue and I found it heartbreaking. I also just started watching The Chi on TV and it reminds me a lot of Dear Martin as well.

  12. I need to get to some of these too. A Gentleman's Guide, They Both Die and The Bear and the Nightingal are ones I have or library does and I want to read. I liked but didn't love The Inexplicable Logic. Good luck getting to these!

  13. Nice list of books!! I hope you read them all in 2018!! Here's a link to my TTT post for this week: http://captivatedreader.blogspot.com/2018/01/top-ten-tuesday-ten-books-i-meant-to.html

  14. I loved Strange the Dreamer and The Inexplicable Logic of My Life. I enjoyed They Both Die at the End and Release. Our Dark Duet is good, but is probably my least favorite Schwab. Still, "bad Schwab" is better than "good most people." I think you might like Release in that it has two fun meta aspects: being inspired by Forever and being structured like To The Lighthouse.

  15. I've been pretty bad at reading 2017 releases myself! I've had a copy of Our Dark Duet since it was released but have just never been in the mood to read it, and I bought Strange the Dreamer on my Kindle recently, but haven't started that either.
I hope you enjoyed A Conjuring of Light though! I did manage to read that one, and I enjoyed it, although A Gathering of Shadows was still my favourite book of the series.

  16. If it makes you feel any better, I haven't read any of these either. I just need more time in the day/month/year!

    Happy TTT!

  17. The Bear and the Nightingale got me super emotionally invested in its story in a way that, honestly, many books don't manage. And the sequel is already out!

  18. Oooh we have a LOT in common! Even a few that I didn't have on my list, but still need to read, like Dear Martin. Actually, the only ones I have read are Strange the Dreamer, They Both Die, Waking Gods (all VERY good), and Release (good, but not my fave of his). Hope you get to read some of them soon :D

  19. Maggie Stiefvater is one of my favorite authors, but somehow I didn't get to All the Crooked Saints last year. I definitely need to fix that in 2018. I also need to read The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue and Our Dark Duet. I hope you get to read all of these, and thanks for stopping by!

  20. Our Dark Duet, A Conjuring of Light and They Both Die at the End are SUCH AMAZING BOOKS. I can't wait for you to read them! :D I definitely want to read Strange the Dreamer, and All the Crooked Saints as well. They sound so good! I hope you enjoy whichever books you end up reading this year! <3

  21. I loved The Bear and the Nightingale! Also, Sleeping Giants and WAking Gods -- so original and fascinating. And I just read The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue, and thought it was really a lot of fun. So many great books - enjoy!

  22. Yep - half of those are on my TBR list as well. No idea why I didn't read them, but oh well! Hopefully I'll get to a few of them this year. Good luck!

  23. Oh I meant to read All the Crooked Saints and Strange the Dreamer as well! Hopefully in 2018!

  24. The only one I've read is Conjuring of light and it was so good. I'm looking for Strange the dreamer or This Savage Song to work on my catch up list.
I'm scared to read hyped books and wait till everyone has moved on to something else. Less pressure

What is your take on hyped books?

  25. I've not read these so I can't give you any advice - but I love the look of the Mackenzi Lee and Schwab is never a bad choice :)

  26. I didn't really love The Gentleman's Guide but I am curious about the next book since that'll be Felicity's story. The MC in The Gentleman's Guide got on my nerves too often to be enjoyable really, haha.
As for Dear Martin: definitely worth your time!!

  27. The Bear and the Nightingale is a magical story. I hope you have a chance to read it soon.

    Happy readings! ;)

  28. Most of these books are sitting on my tbr list. At least they have some company :) I did read Bear and the Nightingale and Waking Gods and enjoyed both of them.

  29. You should read Waking Gods, so you can tell me what happens after the first one.

  30. These are all new to me, so I won't be much help in giving you advice on what to read and what to avoid. They Both Die at the End sounds interesting. Good luck with reading these. Thanks for visiting The Book Connection.

  32. I actually haven't read any of these! I heard good things initially about Strange the Dreamer, but haven't heard much lately.

  33. I read A Conjuring of Light and Waking Gods - both were awesome! :)

    Happy reading!

  34. I've never read a book by Maggie, but have heard her books are fabulous! You've reminded me I should take a closer look at this one, which is, I think her newest release.(?)

Thanks so much for visiting Finding Wonderland. :)

  35. I'm so glad that, out of these books, you've read A Conjuring of Light ahah, that's the only one I read and I LOVED it so much :)
I hope we will both get to read Dear Martin this year, it sounds so good.
    Happy reading!! :)

  36. So many favourites of mine made it to your list! Release and They Both Die at the End are the two that have stuck with me the most, and A Conjuring of Light and The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue are two big loves. All of them are books I would re-read.

All the Crooked Saints, Strange the Dreamer, and The Inexplicable Logic of My Life are all books I really want to read, but haven't because I haven't got my hands on any copies yet. It might be a while until I get to them because I'm trying to focus on getting through the books I own already, but they are definitely high up on my wish list.

I hope you get to read and love all of these books :D

  37. Dear Martin and Our Dark Duet are two hyped books I didn't manage to get around to either. But I loved The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue and I hope you get to read it soon!
