Do you ever buy a book and not read it right away? Then it sits on your shelf for weeks because there are so many books and so little time. It keeps getting bumped down your reading priority list. Years pass. Then you forget why you bought this particular book and start losing interest in reading it. 

Today, I'm going to look at the books that have been sitting on my shelf the longest. I'm trying to get myself reenergized to read them.

Recently, I met a person, and this conversation happened:

Her: "What did you study in college?"

Me: "My BA is in English literature. My MFA is in children's literature."

Her: "So you like reading?"

Me: "Yep. I read books and talk about them on the internet."

Her: "I like books, but I sound stupid when I talk about them."

Me: "Me too, but that's never stopped me."

The conversation made me wonder what goes on inside my head while I'm writing a book review. What do I look for in fiction? What do I say in reviews?

I've been on a book buying ban since August 2022, and I'm slightly running out of books to read. I think I own 17 unread books right now. Most of the stuff I've read lately came from the library.

Beautiful Text-Only Book Covers

Today, we're taking about book covers. I always kind of dread talking about covers because I know nothing about art. I have opinions about art, but I don't have the vocabulary to express those opinions.

Here are 10 text-only covers that I think are beautiful. However, I suspect calling them "text-only" is wrong because a few of them have a tiny bit more than just text. Maybe they're minimalist covers? Text-focused covers? They're covers where "the artist uses font, color, and shapes to show a book's essence." That is too many words to fit in a blog post title, so we're calling these "text-only" covers.

I Read 200+ "Best Books Of 2023" Lists

It took nearly a month, but I have searched the Internet and read, watched, or listened to over 200 "Best Books Of 2023" lists. Why would I waste my time doing this? Because I'm insufferably nosy and want to know what everybody is reading. I also have a bad case of FOMO. What if there's an awesome book in the world that everybody knows about except me? I can't let that happen!

While I was perusing the lists, I jotted down the titles of books I saw multiple times. Then I looked them up on Goodreads and picked 16 that I want to read. That's what I'm going to show you today.

There was one book that I saw more than any other. It was Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. That's definitely the favorite book of 2023, especially on TikTok. I have no interest in reading it, but I'm happy that so many people enjoyed it.

2023 Reading Statistics

Welcome to my 2023 reading stats post! It was a pretty good reading year. Much better than 2022. I finished 78 books and enjoyed the majority of them.

I tracked fewer stats last year than I normally do. I didn't bother with blog stats because nearly all of my traffic comes from Pinterest. My blog traffic graph would look like this:

I didn't bother with money graphs because I only bought 4 books in 2023. I spent around $70 on them. I don't need a graph for that.

Okay. Let's make graphs! I mostly make these graphs because I like to see how my reading changes from year to year. I don’t know how interesting the graphs will be to people who aren't me, but I decorated them for you! I even used a cottagecore color palette because that feels very 2023.
