In My Reading Life
Last week, I read The Deep by Alma Katsu. It's an alternate history horror novel about a ghost/demon/woman/thing haunting the Titanic before it sinks. I love Alma Katu's creativity. She finds fascinating ways to blend historical fact with spooky fiction. Her characters feel real because they're based on real historical figures, but the reader is never sure what's reality and what's the author's imagination. I like that unsettled feeling in a horror book.
I didn't love The Deep as much as the author's other book, The Hunger. The Deep is a bit too slow for my tastes. It was easy to put the book down and read something else because it took a long time for something spooky to happen. I got slightly bored.
I'm still an Alma Katsu fan. I used my Christmas money to buy The Fervor and can't wait to read more historical horror.
In The Rest Of My Life
Five things that made me happy recently:
- There's finally snow. It's been a hot winter so far. I hate it. Summer is hot enough.
- I spent several hours reading a book without being interrupted by my phone or people in the house. I forgot what it's like to be left alone.
- Book shopping with Christmas money! I got The Fervor for me and a picture book about mythical creatures for Brooklyn. She's interested in unicorns and monsters and stuff.
- I applied for a new job. I don't have high hopes because I'm probably not qualified, but I would very much enjoy living above the poverty line someday.
- Does anyone else use the Obsidian app for note taking? I downloaded it because I'm serious about learning my 11 things. Do you have any tips for me? Are there plugins I should be using to make it a better tool for remembering information?

I feel the same way, I enjoyed The Deep but loved The Hunger more. I always like reading Alma Katsu's books, she does so much research for them! Hope you have a great week:-)

We are in a white out right now. I am not a fan of snow. Good luck with the job. I am always surprised when people I know apply for and get jobs I didn't think I (or they ) were qualified for. You never know.
ReplyDeleteI do need to give Alma Katsu a read at some point. I hope you get the job you applied for. I feel you on not being confident. In my case I just know that I suck at interviewing and then with me being at the upper end of the payscale at my age, they will most likely choose to hire the cheaper/younger candidate. I just want out of the hell I work in right now. I was glad for a snowy weekend to hang out at home this weekend. Hope you have a good week!
