The Sunday Post #394

In My Reading Life

I started 2026 with a DNF. Yeah. We're not off to a great start. I don't think I'm the target audience for Deliberate Calm: How To Learn And Lead In A Volatile World by Jacqueline Brassey, Aaron de Smet, and Michiel Kruyt. The book is about how to become a better leader, but the authors assume that the reader already has resources and a leadership position.

I was most excited to read the chapter about overcoming burnout because I am definitely burnt out. The authors suggest hiring a nanny and delegating tasks to your team. Um . . . . I don't have nanny money. And I don't have a team. What am I supposed to do about my burnout?

This book is not super relevant to my life, which is fine. I'm sure it would be helpful to a different reader.

In The Rest Of My Life

I haven't written a Sunday Post in a while because Baby Brooklyn was on winter break. I don't know how people get anything done when the children are full of sugar and acting absolutely feral for several weeks.

Ok. Five things that made me happy recently:

  1. I hope you had an excellent holiday season! Did you get (or give) any cool gifts? Brooklyn got tons of art supplies and Legos because her favorite hobby is making giant messes. I got a stair stepper and some books. It was a fun time.
  2. It's officially off season at work. That means I get a chance to sleep. And breathe. And eat a meal sitting down.
  3. New season of The Traitors US! That's my current favorite reality TV show. If you have the Peacock app, you should watch it. It's a delightfully over-the-top murder mystery game.
  4. I'm still playing the Planet Zoo videogame. I was working on a winter zoo, but the zoo got so big that it made my computer lag. I had to start a new zoo. This one is a petting zoo with farm animals and a witchy theme.
  5. I love all the "Best Books Of 2025" lists that have been popping up. Bookish people are terrible for my wallet. If you want to join me in spending all the money, here's a list of the best books I read last year.

Happy New Year! I hope 2026 is uneventful for you. Last year had too many events for my tastes.

Take care of yourselves and be kind to each other. See you around the blogosphere!

  2. OMG! Hire a nanny. That would have been nice when my child was younger if I had the money. School breaks are always tough. My daughter loved crafts (and still does). It's a good mess at least, and Legos are total brain candy. Go Brooklyn!

  3. I know how tiring kids can be and I am not missing that time AJ!!!

  4. Good grief! Who *is* the target audience for Deliberate Calm? I know it is the not the world I live in.

I love looking through all the Best of 2025 lists.
