A Sorceress Comes To Call by T. Kingfisher
Adult Fantasy Horror
August 6, 2024
Cordelia knows her mother is unusual. Their house doesn’t have any doors between rooms, and her mother doesn't allow Cordelia to have a single friend—unless you count Falada, her mother's beautiful white horse. The only time Cordelia feels truly free is on her daily rides with him. But more than simple eccentricity sets her mother apart. Other mothers don’t force their daughters to be silent and motionless for hours, sometimes days, on end. Other mothers aren’t sorcerers.
After a suspicious death in their small town, Cordelia’s mother insists they leave in the middle of the night, riding away on Falada’s sturdy back, leaving behind all Cordelia has ever known. They arrive at the remote country manor of a wealthy older man, the Squire, and his unwed sister, Hester. Cordelia’s mother intends to lure the Squire into marriage, and Cordelia knows this can only be bad news for the bumbling gentleman and his kind, intelligent sister.
Hester sees the way Cordelia shrinks away from her mother, how the young girl sits eerily still at dinner every night. Hester knows that to save her brother from bewitchment and to rescue the terrified Cordelia, she will have to face down a wicked witch of the worst kind.
Why I want to read it: I read T. Kingfisher's Nettle & Bone and loved the quirky characters and the humor. I can't wait to read more of her work.
The Seventh Veil Of Salome by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Adult Historical Fiction
August 6, 2024
1950s. Every actress wants to play Salome, the star-making role in a big-budget movie about the legendary woman whose story has inspired artists since ancient times.
So when the film’s mercurial director casts Vera Larios, an unknown Mexican ingenue, in the lead role, she quickly becomes the talk of the town. Vera also becomes an object of envy for Nancy Hartley, a bit player whose career has stalled and who will do anything to win the fame she believes she richly deserves.
Two actresses, both determined to make it to the top in Golden Age Hollywood—a city overflowing with gossip, scandal, and intrigue—make for a sizzling combination.
But this is the tale of three women, for it is also the story of the princess Salome herself, consumed with desire for the fiery prophet who foretells the doom of her stepfather, a woman torn between the decree of duty and the yearning of her heart.
Why I want to read it: It's written by the author of Mexican Gothic. I like Mexican Gothic because I'm scared of mushrooms. They know too much. I wonder if this new book will make me scared of anything. I hope so.
UNDER THE SURFACE BY DIANA URBAN
Young Adult Thriller
August 13, 2024
Ruby is terrified to cave to her feelings for Sean and risk him crushing her heart.
Sean is pumped to spend a week with Ruby in Paris on their senior class trip, and he’ll wait however long until she’s ready to take things further.
But when Ruby’s best friend sneaks out the first night to meet a mysterious French boy, Ruby goes after her with two classmates, but caves to another temptation: attending mystery boy’s exclusive party in the Paris catacombs, the intricate web of tunnels beneath the city, home to six million long-dead Parisians. Only they never reach the party.
Underground, as something sinister chases them, they get lost in the endless maze of bones, uncovering dark secrets about the catacombs . . . and each other. And if they can’t find a way out, they’ll die in the dark beneath the City of Light.
Aboveground, Sean races to find the girl he loves as a media frenzy over the four missing teens begins.
Why I want to read it: Well . . . not because of the cover. It looks like someone spent 20 minutes with Photoshop and then declared the cover "good enough." The synopsis sounds cool, though. Getting lost in the catacombs would be terrifying.
Really looking forward to the new Silvia Moreno-Garcia book!
ReplyDeleteYeah I think the Paris catacombs read would be the ticket. I need to find out what else is coming out in August. hmm
ReplyDeleteBut I like Moreno-Garcia. Her book Daughter of Doctor Moreau was good. She's writing books fast now.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really into horror, but that cover for A Sorceress Comes To Call is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYou slay me, but the cover for Under the Surface is bad. I hope you get to read them and that all are hits!
ReplyDeleteHope you get a chance to read all these!
ReplyDeleteNeed ALL of these. Well- I read Sorceress and it is great! And yes to Under the Surface! I am SO excited to read it but... how'd they mess up Paris and Catacombs that badly!? That should have been a cover designer's pièce de résistance, not... whatever happened there.
