The Sunday Post #363

In My Reading Life

I finished a book! My reading has been disappointingly slow lately, so that's an accomplishment.

I read Our Endless Numbered Days by Claire Fuller, and it was disturbing! It's probably one of the most disturbing books I've ever read.

In 1970s England, a father abducts his eight-year-old daughter and takes her to a cabin in the German woods. He convinces her that the world has ended, and they're the only two people left alive. They stay in the woods for nine years. Then the daughter stumbles across a man who says he lives on the other side of the river. Death ensues.

This book is disturbing for many reasons, but mostly it's disturbing because it's so believable. Recently, in my part of the world, an entire family froze to death while trying to survive winter in the wilderness. Their bodies were found in a tent when the snow melted. That must have been a painful way to die because living off the land isn't easy.

The fictional father and daughter in Our Endless Numbered Days face cold and starvation and wildfires. They also have to survive each other. They're both quite volatile.

The author is a beautiful writer and great at developing realistic characters. There are a few plot twists that I should have seen coming but didn't. I was shocked by the ending.

My biggest issue is the book's pacing. It's so slow! The book is nearly 400 pages and didn't need to be that long. Whenever I put it down, I wasn't super motivated to pick it back up because nothing was happening. Well, until the end. The end is intense.

If you like wilderness survival stories and can handle reading about child abuse and violent death, then I recommend this one. It'll leave an impression.

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. So much reality TV. I'm caught up on Survivor, Amazing Race, UK Traitors, and Physical 100. Maybe TV is the reason why I haven't been finishing books.
  2. The weather was nice enough that most of the blizzard snow melted. I went for lots of walks.
  3. It was my birthday. I'm another year closer to death! We went to the expensive BBQ place to celebrate, which is always a good time. It's award-winning BBQ, and it's so expensive that we can only go once a year, but it's worth it.
  4. My job gave me a 4+ hour training course about the computer program that I've been using for years. It's hilarious that they were finally like, "You use this every day. You should probably learn how to do it correctly." According to the instructor, I did very well for being (mostly) self-taught.
  5. Here's this week's Skunkumentary. It's the "Rabbits With Zoomies" edition. I was excited for a minute because I was seeing fewer skunks on the videos, but it turns out that they just dug a new hole. I saw them again when I moved the camera. My dad put a bag of skunk repellant in front of the new hole, but that didn't stop the skunks for very long.

Hello? Is Anybody Out There?

  1. That book does sound disturbing (as does your true related tale). I always wonder what drives people to do such things. Happy Birthday! You are well worth the price of that BBQ, and it's special because you only get it once a year. Who is that pretty kitty? Hope he don't get skunked.

  2. Happy Birthday. Skunks are so destructive, and hard to get rid of. That kitty cat might get sprayed, oh no! What a cutie. Happy Sunday, Aj!

  3. Have a great year — I hope you find another reason to eat some of the best BBQ before another year goes by.

  4. The only reality TV show I watch is Survivor. It's been good this season, but there are still too many survivors for me to have any favorites. The new Deal or No Deal is sort of a cross between the old game show Deal or No Deal and Survivor. It's taking me time to get used to it. Have a great week!

  5. Ugh, so sorry you are still dealing with the skunks!!! We are currently watching Top Ninja Warrier (old seasons) and are enjoying it. Have a great week!

  6. The start of a brand new year of life for you...happy birthday!

It's funny when you are finally offered training for a program you've been using for a long time!

  7. Happy belated birthday!!! What all did you eat at the BBQ place?

400 pages of disturbing sounds like my cup of tea so I ran to GR to add it to my TBR, only to discover it's already on my TBR, so I place a hold at the library. Wait time is approximately two weeks, which is not bad.

  9. Happy Birthday! I'm very intrigued by our endless numbered days but the 400 pages is putting me off. I've been reading a few dense books all at once and I think when I'm done with them, I'll go on a binge of light-hearted, short, trashy books. It will be a while before I want to read another dense book, but we'll see!

  10. I hear what you’re saying about reading AJ. Some days I’m just not into right now and have learned not to put pressure on myself to have to get books read. The bunnies are much more adorable than the skunks, aren’t they? Have a great week!

  11. Well I will not be adding that one to my list. I don't think I could deal with that.

    Happy birthday!!

  13. Love the four-years-too-late training! Classic.

I also watch Amazing Race and look forward to the episodes once the weakest teams are out.

  14. Disturbing sounding book. It sometimes amazes me how easily people can be conned. Sigh.

  15. I'm not sure I could read that book, especially 400 pages of it. Kudos to you for finishing it. Happy birthday to you! Too bad about your stinky, furry friends. Hope they get bored and seek out new digs soon.

  17. Happy birthday! Your book sounds like one I'd run away from. Come see what I'm reading here. Happy reading!

  18. Not sure I'd be able to take a slow 400 pages of disturbing reading, lol! It does sound awful and something that could happen, unfortunately. Happy birthday and wonderful that you went to a place you love. Going less makes it more special, right? I'm sorry your skunk problem continues! Those things are awful! The cat and the bunny are cute. Hope they don't get sprayed!

  19. Happy birthday. Don't think of it as another year closer to death, but as another year to explore and learn. Those skunks are something else.

  20. You are right it does sound disturbing! I really enjoy wildnerness survival stories so this actually looks like something I would be interested in reading.
Take care and have a fantastic week!

  21. Happy belated birthday! I hope you gave yourself a cake! I might have a copy of the Fuller book and haven't read it yet. Does it have a lot of child abuse? argh.
