In My Reading Life

My book club read Navigate Chaos: A 5-Step Guide To Balance Work, Family, And Other Life Priorities by Steven B. Wiley. Honestly, it wasn't awesome. The book club gave it some serious side-eye.

The author owns a life coaching company called CEEK. It's pronounced "seek." It's not an acronym. It's just "seek" spelled confusingly and in ALL CAPS. Sometimes CEEK is written in ALL CAPS and italics so it's extra noticeable while you're reading. The author never misses an opportunity to remind the reader that he has a company called CEEK. It gives the entire book sleezy salesman vibes.

The five steps to achieving balance are to live according to your values, establish routines, appreciate the moment, think positive, and have integrity. This advice seems pretty obvious to me, but I'm sure someone badly needs to hear it. It's great advice. I acknowledge that I'm not the target audience for this book, so the advice wasn't groundbreaking for me. It's all stuff you learn as you bounce through adulthood. I've been bouncing for a while.

This book might be relevant to your life if you're young, Christian, middle class or better, and not working a first responder job. However, the advice is so basic that I'm sure you could find it in a book with better writing. The writing style and formatting of this book scream "first time self-published author."

My life advice is to CEEK . . . a better book.

I followed my own advice and CEEKed (sought? CEEght?) The Curious Charms Of Arthur Pepper by Phaedra Patrick. This novel is delightful. It's the kind of book you read on an airplane to take your mind off your leg cramps and flight anxiety.

A year after Arthur Pepper's wife dies, he decides to clean out her closet and finds a charm bracelet that he's never seen before. His questions about the charms take him from England to France to India. He learns that his wife had an exciting past that she didn't tell him about when they met. He wants to know why she hid it.

This story hooked me right away because my charm bracelet is one of my favorite possessions. My mom started it in the 1970s and gave it to me in the early 2000s. I've continued adding charms to it. None of the charms are as interesting as the ones in the book. The stories behind my charms are, "I went camping in Canada that one time" and so forth.

The Curious Charms Of Arthur Pepper is full of quirky characters and ridiculous situations. The whole plot is silly and low stakes, but I was having too much fun to care. You don't need brain power to read this book. The writing style is simple. The plot is linear. It's pure escapist fun.

It's not all frivolous, though. Arthur is depressed, and he occasionally questions why his wife gave up her adventures to settle down with him. The bracelet rocks his self-confidence a bit. But, investigating the bracelet breaks him out of his rut. He learns that you're never too old to change your life.

I don't think this book will stick in my head forever, but it was a fun way to spend a day. Read it if you enjoyed A Man Called Ove.

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. I got new pillows for my bed. They're so fluffy!
  2. Several weeks ago, I ordered a bunch of classic books to replace my classics that were falling apart. I finally have all the books I ordered! A few of them were on backorder. Someday I'll take pictures of them for you.
  3. I think my not-COVID is almost gone. I went running twice last week. I only went a mile each time, but I didn't cough very much. It's been three weeks of coughing. I'm tired.
  4. I've been spending a lot of time on YouTube because not-COVID kept me in the house. I watched a bunch of Jack Edwards BookTube videos. He has a whole playlist where he reads books recommended by famous people. It's amusing.
  5. I found this video of a NASA scientist trying to outsmart a search and rescue dog. Also amusing.

CEEK . . . Me On Social Media

  2. I'm glad your not-COVID cough is just about gone. Lots of sickness this time of year. Glad we can't catch anything over the Internet!

The Curious Charms Of Arthur Pepper sounds delightful. Sometimes delightful is just what I need.

  3. My aunt lives in Colorado and I can attest to there being quite a lot of flat land for sure. Glad you're feeling better! Have a great week!

  4. I think just about everyone has been sick this past week! I got the bug or whatever at the end of the week. My mom finally went to Urgent Care and they told her she should have come in sooner. So now she's got a bunch of stuff to try to get herself uncongested. Hope you continue to feel better. Love that Colorado meme at the beginning. It kind of applies backwards to Kansas as most of Kansas is flat, but as you get closer to Colorado it has some pretty hills! lol Have a good week!

  5. I am so glad you enjoyed Arthur Pepper. I loved it. I have a soft spot for old people. I am a Patrick fan as well. All her books are heartwarming. You cracked me up with the CEEK book <--this is why our kids can't spell. Sorry your not-COVID has been lingering. That happened to my whole family in December/January. Hope you are back to 100% soon

  6. Ha! There are definitely self-help books with the entire purpose of advertising the author's business. Arthur Pepper sounds like an interesting fellow to meet up with in a book.

  7. It's great you are feeling better - I hope that continues. My niece moved to Colorado for those mountains. I have yet to visit and meet my grand nephew. Sigh. We are just home bodies.

  8. Laughing at CEEK so hard! I love it! I won't be CEEKing it out but I am CEEKing answers about how on earth did your bookclub come to choose it? Arthur Pepper sounds like a fun book, I'm not really a charm bracelet person because I don't like wearing a lot of jewelry on a daily basis, but I love the idea behind it.

  9. Coughing is the worst - it just always seems to linger and it's so draining. I'm glad you enjoyed Arthur Pepper!

  10. Nonstop coughing is exhausting. I do hope you're starting to feel better. I'm sure the runs were tough, but getting outside and exercising must have felt so good after being house-bound.

  11. Glad you are starting to feel better. I find it interesting that your FOMO encouraged you to look at 200 best of lists, I would have given up, LOL! But, I am glad you found some new books to read from it. Have a great week and thanks for stopping by my blog earlier. Cindy @ Cindy's Book Corner

  16. I like the sound of The Curious Charms Of Arthur Pepper. I have my mother's charm bracelet from when she was a young teen, and I have one of my own too. I wonder where they've both got to...!

  17. I liked Arthur Pepper a lot but somehow get it confused with The Story of Arthur Truluv by Elizabeth Berg. You would probably like the second one too. I hope your cough continues to improve!

  26. I had to laugh at the Colorado meme because the top pic is exactly what comes to mind when I think of CO. Jack Edwards is so entertaining.

  27. I won't be CEEKing that book out! How did that book get picked for your book club? Hope your not-Covid goes away and you feel better!

    ReplyDelete
  28. WHY did your book club pick this book!? Why is this man trying to give life advice when he doesn't even know how to spell basic words!? I have so many questions! It was worth it though, because your discussion of it gave us all reading it a good chuckle! Arthur Pepper looks very sweet but also like I would not be able to stop crying so... Idk. I am glad you are on the mend, and I hope you are back to full health asap!

  29. My neighbor told me about the Arthur Pepper book. I'm glad you loved it as much as you did. I need to read it myself one of these days.

  31. No, No, noooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Why did you have to link me to Jack Edwards BookTube? I can already tell I will have to watch ALL his books recommended by famous people vids!
