The Sunday Post #295

On The Blog This Week
- On Tuesday, there's a book haul.
In My Reading Life
My mission to read the giant books on my shelf continues. Last week, I finished Lair Of Dreams by Libba Bray. This is book #2 in the Diviners series. I didn't think I liked paranormal fiction, but maybe I should reconsider because I'm thoroughly enjoying this series. It's set in 1920s New York and stars a group of young people with supernatural powers. In this novel, there's a "sleeping sickness" that causes monsters to attack people in their sleep. The characters have to stop partying long enough to defeat the monsters.
I liked the second book less than the first. Probably because I'm not a huge fan of dream sequences in books. There are a lot of them in the second book. I still had fun reading it. The setting and time period are well-researched. The characters are quirky and loveable. Even though the book is nearly 600 pages, it's very quick to read. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.
I'm still reading As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann. I'm starting my third week of slogging through this unnecessarily fat monster. People in the comments of last week's Sunday Post told me to DNF it, but I can't! I'm so close to the end! I know I can finish it! I just have to stay motivated to read it for more than 10 minutes.
It's not a bad book. The writing is fine. The pacing is just too slow for my tastes. It's about an awful dude in 1600s England who becomes obsessed with a military coworker. The two men start a secret romantic relationship, but it doesn't go well because one of the dudes is awful. There's not much else to the story.
In The Rest Of My Life
- It was Baby Brooklyn's birthday! She turned 3 and is probably not a baby anymore. I can't believe we've kept her alive for 3 years. I don't know how to parent a child!
- It was my mom's birthday too. She might murder me for saying how old she turned, so I'm not going to do it.
- So much chocolate. Since it was Valentine's Day and two birthdays, I ended up eating a lot of chocolate.
- More new books. I should slow down on the book buying, but I've found so many good deals on used books lately. I can't pass them up. I swear I'll read the books eventually.
- I got a lot of blogging done. It's always good to have posts scheduled.
I Actually Want To See Your Wordles
Take care of yourselves and be kind to each other. See you around the blogosphere!
Happy birthday to Brooklyn! Our Wyatt turns three next month. No more Baby Wyatt, I guess.
ReplyDeleteI don't care how far I am in a book, if it's not working for me, I'm done.
If I get a good deal on a book, I'm getting it even if I have a lot of other books. I'm with you; I will get to it one day.
I'm confused by your mention of keeping a baby alive -- I guess I haven't read all your previous blog posts explaining who she is and why she is fragile. But I wish her well whatever the circumstances.

I love Wordle! Yesterday I actually got it with 2 guesses, which is great for me. I am a firm believer in DNF, at any point in a book. It's not like I don't have a huge TBR to muddle through :) Maybe you can just skip to the end if you're curious.
ReplyDeleteYou can't pass up a good deal. Considering how expensive some books are, grab when you can. Happy Birthday Brooklyn! Wow, three years. Amazing.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to Brooklyn and your mom! I agree with Sam, can't pass up a good deal on books!
ReplyDeleteIf buying books is our main vice (and I hope it is) then I think we're doing ok! Oh, and the chocolate. That's ok, too. :-) Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to Brooklyn and your mother!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how quickly Brooklyn has turned three! They do have a habit of growing up fast.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your week...and I am craving some chocolate, but can't each much of it since my gall bladder surgery almost three years ago! You'd think things would get better.
Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting my blog.
Happy Birthday to everyone! There were two birthdays in my life this week too lol
ReplyDeleteI miss having posts scheduled. But happy birthday to Brooklyn!!! How exciting!
ReplyDeleteHappy Belated Birthday to Brooklyn - hard to believe she's 3! I'm sure your mom is happy you didn't mention her age, but HBD to her, too. Hooray for new books!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to Brooklyn and your mom. A good deal on a book is not to be passed up! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI love the top picture and it's so true! LOL
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to Brooklyn and your mom!
Hope you have a great week!
I started playing Wordle this week. I've played it four times now. It's really fun. I love it! I started on the day when everyone was unhappy because a lot of people couldn't figure out the fourth letter and their Wordle board looked like Tetris, lol. Do you start with the same word each time? I do.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, happy birthday to Brooklyn and your mom.
My Sunday Post
Happy belated to lil Brooklyn and your mom!!
ReplyDeleteLol! Those Diviners books made me want to read more YA although YA isn't really my jam. I have the last book left to read and I can't wait to see how Libba Bray will wrap things up because it's a lot to wrap up.
Happy Birthdays! She's almost not a toddler anymore either, she can go right to Big Girl Brooklyn.
ReplyDeleteAnne - Books of My Heart
I haven't read much of paranormal fiction, but a while ago, I enjoyed books by M. J. Rose.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!

Happy birthday to Baby Brooklyn! The 3's are fun! Of course, I've enjoyed all the ages and stages with my kids. - Melinda @ A Web of Stories
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to Brooklyn and your mom! I think the birthdays and Valentine's day deserve a lot of chocolate. But then I think a regular Tuesday deserves a lot of chocolate. Have a wonderful week.
ReplyDeleteBusy week! Happy reading. My Monday bookshelf is up!

I know what you mean about getting books with the intention of reading them "someday." I've been trying to add books I bought in 2008 to my monthly reading plans. Too often I find that they don't match my current reading tastes though. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthdays all around! And yay for chocolate and books!
ReplyDeleteThe Diviners series sounds really good - it's a time period not widely used in paranormal fiction and your description definitely piqued my interest. I DNF books that I find slow, though I read ebooks and I'm not sure if I could DNF a physical book in the same way.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
Happy birthday to Baby Brooklyn! Many of us don't know how to parent until we become one. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday to Brooklyn and your mom! Lair Of Dreams sounds like a book I would be interested in reading. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to Brooklyn and your mom! Sounds to me like you've got this parenting thing figured out, whether you know it or not.
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to DNF a book when you're close to the end. After about the halfway point, I'm committed. Well, let's be honest--I rarely DNF so I'm usually committed after page 1!
Enjoy your week!
Happy Birthday to your mom and Brooklyn!
ReplyDeleteI am glad you liked Lair Of Dreams. You aren't the first person to say the first was better. My daughter seems to be all about the big books lately. I am so glad to see her finding joy in reading finally. There was a time when I thought it wouldn't happen.
I have a hard time giving up on books too, especially if I am enjoying it even a little. I really have to be bored with a book to decide to DNF--and not care one wit what happens.
I hope you have a great week, AJ.
Aww, three is a fun age! Can we really ever have enough books? You need to watch Encanto. It is wonderful and the music is splendid. My girls and the Royals and I have all the songs memorized.
