In My Reading Life

I finally finished reading The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles. This is a chunky book. I loved it! Highly recommend. It's adult historical fiction about a group of young men who have just been released from a work farm. They're trying to figure out what to do with their new freedom. It reminds me of the adventure stories I read as a young teen. The characters are gallivanting around the US and making bad choices. It's fun and full of plot twists.

The characters are awesome. There are too many of them, and the book would have been tighter with fewer points-of-view, but I didn't mind very much. They have memorable personalities. If you like your characters morally gray and fatally flawed, you need to read this novel.

I'm not sure how I feel about the ending. I understand why the author did it. He plays with myths and tropes throughout the story, and the ending fits the themes. However, I could see the author's hand controlling the characters. I'm not totally convinced that the decisions they made fit with their personalities.

That's my only complaint. I will definitely check out Amor Towles's other books. I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

I started As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann. Another chunky book. I'm trying to get the giant historical fiction books off my TBR shelf because they're hogging all the space.

Funny story about this one: I randomly came across it in a used bookstore. I knew nothing about it. According to the synopsis, it's about a couple in 1600s England who get involved with a violent revolutionary political movement. Murder and kidnapping ensue. I bought the book because it sounded dark and adventurous. Then, I looked it up on Goodreads and saw people shelving it as "romance" and "erotica." Um . . . what? Nobody told me that the murders and kidnapping would be sexy! Why doesn't it say that in the synopsis?

Anyway, I'm 100 pages into it. So far, we're at murder = 1, rape = 1, and sexy sex = 0.

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. Two years of yoga! On February 1, 2020, I decided I would do Yoga With Adriene every day. In the last two years, I've only missed 4 days.
  2. Olympic hockey. The Olympics is the only time I can find women's hockey on TV. I've been watching a lot of it already.
  3. Last October, I made a goal of creating 400 Pinterest pins for this blog before February 1. Goal achieved! I have pins scheduled for the rest of the year.
  4. Applying for jobs I'm almost qualified to do. I doubt I'll get hired, but if employers are as desperate as they claim, maybe they'll give me a chance.
  5. I started watching The Umbrella Acadamy. It's really good.

  2. Two years of yoga - you're a boss. And, wow! Pins scheduled for the rest of the year. That's like something I might be able to say at the end of November, but at the beginning of February -- that's impressive. Good luck with the job search. I am sure you are more qualified than you think you are.

  3. Good job with yoga! I have done yoga every week for the last ten years...until the pandemic. I'm just the opposite. I can't seem to do yoga without a class.

I thought Lincoln Highway was great, too. I liked the characters a lot. And on-the-road books are the best.

  5. Good luck on the job applications! I find that in most job postings, what employers are actually looking for doesn't even really exist, so it doesn't hurt to try!

  6. I've been wanting to read The Lincoln Highway. I might try it on audiobook. Best of luck to you on the job hunt!

  7. I am also enjoying watching the Olympics. I am not a winter sport person so this venue is my time to splurge and enjoy! Good luck with the job applications. Having just transitioned to a new job recently, I know how stressful it can all be.

  8. Your comments about The Lincoln Highway make sense to me, but I didn't really find it in the least problematic-- liked it a lot! My review is here:

  9. I've heard good things about Yoga with Adrienne. And I haven't watched nearly enough Olympics yet-maybe today I can sit down and tune some in.

Good luck with the job search! Isn't that always fun?

  10. Good for you for applying for jobs you're almost qualified for. The absolute worst thing that can happen is you won't get it, and you're exactly where you are now.

  12. Wow great job with two years of yoga. I love all the Olympic sports. It looks like you fared pretty well with popular books. I haven't read any of them and am not sure I would do as well. Good luck on your job applications.

  14. Fingers crossed on the jobs. I've heard some mixed reviews on The Lincoln Highway and from people who loved other books by the same author. I've only read A Gentleman in Moscow which I really enjoyed. Great job on the yoga! I always feel better when I'm practicing regularly which has not been for awhile. Have a wonderful week!

  19. Congrats on your yoga streak! I'm also doing that, although I just hit 285 days today. I haven't technically missed any days, but some days my workout is her "Daily Neck Yoga" 3 minute video, which counts...right? - Melinda @ A Web of Stories

  20. I've been watching the Olympics too. I do prefer figure skating to hockey though. Congratulations on the 2 years of yoga. I lasted two classes. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  21. I'll have to be sure to check in tomorrow for your list.

The Lincoln Highway sounds great. Sexy murders and kidnappings sound different. Not sure if I would grab that one.

Congrats on sticking with yoga and meeting your Pinterest goal. I kind of wandered away from that platform. One day, I should go back.

Thanks for sharing and for visiting my blog today.

  22. Two years of yoga - wow! I have been thinking of trying yoga again. I tried starting with Adrienne a couple of years ago, and then I got bursitis and a frozen shoulder (not from the yoga!) and had to stop. But I never got farther than one of her beginning videos, which I just kept repeating.

Best of luck with your job search! I hope you're able to find a job you will really enjoy.

My husband enjoyed Towles' previous book, so maybe he would enjoy The Lincoln Highway.

  24. I am glad you loved The Lincoln Highway. I don't think I have run into anyone I know who has read it that didn't like it. Congratulations on keeping up with yoga for two years so far! I have seen the first season of The Umbrella Academy and really liked it. I haven't managed to watch more though. I hope you have a great week!

  26. Good report on The Lincoln Highway. I need to get to it. I was up late watching the U.S. vs. Canada hockey game ... wow what a rivalry! I'm exhausted by it. Meanwhile you've inspired me to try the yoga class on youtube. Hopefully it'll make me a bit more limber. as way too tight. Have a great week.

  28. I LOVE THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY SO MUCH!!!!!! Lol, glad you're enjoying it! It's my personal mission to force everyone to love it - I've been a fan of the comics since forever (because My Chemical Romance = life, so as a teen fangirl, I def. had to read *comics* written by *Gerard Way* Lol!)
