On The Blog Last Week

On The Blog This Week

  • On Tuesday I talk about the 10 signs that you’re an incurable book lover.
  • On Wednesday I list the April book releases I’m excited to read.

In My Reading Life

It was all Sherlock Holmes! I finished The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes and The Return of Sherlock Holmes. They’re both short story collections, so they’re kind of a mixed bag. I didn’t hate any of the stories, but some are more action-packed than others. I finally read the story where Sherlock dies! Well, “dies.” I was actually a little disappointed in that one because I expected it to be more climactic. I think there was too much plot packed into too little space. I can tell that the author was sick of writing this character and wanted him gone.

I also finished The Hound of the Baskervilles. It’s brilliant! Best Sherlock book so far. It’s atmospheric and unpredictable. I love the setting, love the supernatural mystery, love the twists, love that it’s less racist than the other Sherlock books. Sherlock isn’t around for most of the story, which I like because his arrogance sometimes gets on my nerves.

Right now, I’m reading The Valley of Fear. I just started it, so I don’t have an opinion yet.

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. I discovered that I’m very talented at this self-isolation stuff. I’m antisocial and lazy. Staying in the house hasn’t been difficult so far.
  2. I’m working on a horror novella. Because the world needs more horror, I guess? I don’t know. It’s terrible timing, but it’s keeping me entertained.
  3. Harry Potter movies. They seem to be on TV constantly right now.
  4. Brooklyn is finally learning baby sign language! She says “More” and “All done.” I’m hoping she’ll start saying “All done” instead of slapping her food when she doesn’t want to eat it.
  5. Listen to Randy Rainbow and stay inside!

Let’s Be friends! (I promise to stay far, far away from you.)

Take care of yourselves and be kind to each other! See you around the blogosphere!

  1. I wonder if I would ever put so much time and effort into creating a character, and then grow to hate them, and KILL THEM! I thought you were describing ME, when you said antisocial and lazy.

  2. I have not read any Sherlock Holmes stories yet but I am kind of surprised to learn that he "dies" in one of the stories. The self-isolation hasn't been too bad for me either since I look for excuses not to go anymore most of the time anyway. I am secretly hoping that this will become the new way of life but without the virus and financial strain. Have a great week!

  3. I am also quite talented when it comes to self isolation, but my poor husband is going crazy. I've never actually read a Sherlock Holmes novel, although I do teach Sherlock Holmes and the Speckled Band as part of a mystery unit. Stay safe and happy reading!

  4. I always enjoy your five happy things. I had to smile about how some of us are suited for self-isolation...I had it down to hermit levels before this even started. Then I was "forced" by my kids into this residential facility and realized how much I hated going to the dining room for meals. Forced socializing.

Isolation is better! LOL. Except I would like to go out now and then. Sigh.

I smiled again at the imaged of Brooklyn slapping her food when she doesn't want it.

    Stay safe and well.

  5. We had just gotten into a routine for retirement when everything changed. This new routine is not much different from retirement, really, except I've had a terrible time getting into books. I worry constantly about my 93-year-old dad and my elderly friends and other family, though. I'm no young chicken either.

My husband loves mysteries, and we've decided to try to listen to some audiobooks from the library. I imagine we will try some Sherlock Holmes soon.

  6. Yeah, it really is Harry Potter movies non-stop, around the clock!

LOLL baby sign language is the best!

  7. Honesty life in self isolation isn’t all that different from my life pre virus. I’m not sure that’s a good thing though.

Wishing you a great reading week and good health

  8. Bwahahaha same as what Sam said above! You could have described me too AJ!

  9. I haven't read the original Sherlock Holmes stories in ages, but I read them several times when I was in my teens and twenties. If you haven't read Laurie King's Mary Russell & Sherlock Holmes series, I highly recommend it once you have finished the original stories.

I'm kind of like ShellyRae; since I already work from home, my life hasn't changed all that much. Actually, having Mr. Bookwyrm home during the day is rather nice! I do miss church, though, and I miss my choruses fiercely.

  10. Randy Rainbow is the best! I haven't managed to read much lately, but sure hope to turn things around this week.

  11. I have only read one Sherlock Holmes book--The Hound of the Baskervilles. I have seen many incarnations of Doyle's character in movies and on television though. I really need to read more of the original series. We've been watching a lot of Harry Potter lately too. I hope you and your family stay safe and well.

  12. I've read a lot of Sherlock Holmes and really enjoy it. I bought all the HP movies on digital when they were on sale one time and we have a couple on DVD. I have not watched any of them yet but have loved all the books. I have been drifting and hope to be less lazy this week.

Stay healthy, safe and happy reading!

  13. I've never read Sherlock Holmes. My husband bought the complete collection of stories when we were in university - and they're still on the bookshelf - but I've never been tempted to pick them up... I love hearing what people think about them though! They tend to split opinion. :)

I wish you lots of continued success with the self-isolation!

  14. Well, be happy about the fact that you don´t have any problems with staying at home and away from your family. Stay safe and healthy.

  15. I enjoyed The Valley of Fear - it's not quite as good as The Hound of the Baskervilles, but it's still an engrossing read. And you're right - some of the stories are horribly racist and Holmes is frankly an arrogant jerk, but ah... dear old Watson is a joy:). And many thanks for the song - Social Distance is hilarious. Have a peaceful, healthy week, AJ.

  16. We're doing okay with the isolation, too, but I sure do miss going out to eat and getting together with friends. Stay safe!

  17. Aw, I miss when my youngest niece would do sign language. She really only did "more" and "eating" but it was adorable! I really love The Hound of the Baskervilles. I need to read more Sherlock Holmes - I've read a variety of the short stories though.

  18. The actual isolation from other people has been ok for me as I don't like going out and interacting with strangers. But for some reason I'm just feeling tired all the time and I think it is anxiety because of the virus situation. I just wish I felt more like reading as I'm not getting much done! Stay safe!

  19. I'm rather liking social isolation too haha! Guess it's the introvert in me. I mean, I could get used to this! not the coronavirus, of course, but th staying home bit...

Ooh good luck with the novella! And I've never read Any Sherlock Holmes, which seems really weird to me.

    "slapping her food" lol.

  20. I also enjoy the Sherlock Holmes stories and the modern stories that expand on the characters. Laurie King's Mary Rusell/Sherlock Holmes mysteries are a particular favorite of mine. I am not having trouble with the social isolation either. I like being home. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  21. Horror, Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes, and self isolation honestly sounds like a wonderful combination!

  22. I think most of us bookworms are introverts so we are thriving in this self-isolation :) oh... horror novella! Never too many! Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm dealing with the self-isolation just fine. I think it's true that since most of us are bookworms, we are introverts and reading is a solitary hobby :) Good luck with your horror novella :)

Thank you for your kind words for the loss of my kitty.

    Take care and stay safe.

  24. I listened to the first Sherlock Holmes and enjoyed it with some reservations but I really need to go and continue listening to the rest of them. I'm really not minding leaving the house either though I wish the other two people in the house would be better at entertaining themselves sometimes! Have a great week!

  25. I am good at physical distance too but still its the lack of freedom. Laughing at Brooklyn, how fun and what a pleasure to behold even though I am guessing it goes where you'd prefer it didn't!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm pretty good at staying at home as well. As an introvert with social anxiety being at home/working from home isn't stressful. However, sometimes I kinda need to be really alone!

    Happy readings!

  27. Baby sign language is so cute. I love that both my kids learned it. It was very helpful.

  28. I'm doing really well with the isolation too. I love being home all the time. I find it ironic that I have a book coming to read this month called Notes from the Apocalypse. It might be a bit too real.
