Coronavirus Is Hurting The Book Community. Here’s How To Help.

This post contains affiliate links. I earn a commission from qualifying purchases.

Book conferences and author events are great ways to sell books and spread the word about new releases. Unfortunately, many events are being canceled because of Coronavirus/COVID-19. Authors and publishers rely on these events for their income. To help the book community, I’ve put together a post featuring new releases, upcoming releases, and books by authors whose events have been canceled.

Obviously, the best way to help the book community is to buy books (preferably from independent bookshops). But, I completely understand if you can’t go to a bookstore or spend money right now. You can help the people in this post by adding their books to your Goodreads shelves, talking about the books on social media, requesting the books from your library, or buying books online.

AUTHORS: I’ll keep updating and promoting this post for as long as necessary. I’ll add your book to the list. You can put a link to your book in the comments and/or add it to my Twitter thread. Please send me links if you have a book that was published in the last 6 months, an upcoming release, or you were part of an event that got canceled.

AUTHORS WHOSE BOOKS ARE ON THE LIST: Let me know if I messed up your book’s info. I’ll fix it.

BLOGGERS: If you think a book belongs on this list, send me a link! If you want to use your own blog to help authors, feel free to steal whatever you need from this post. I give you permission to use my list and graphics. If you have a blog post about the books that are being impacted by Coronavirus, send me a link. I’ll put it in this post.

READERS: Please buy books if it's financially possible for you! I'd also love some links to awesome independent bookstores.

Okay, let’s get into this:

The Deep by Alma Katsu

G.P. Putnam’s Sons

Someone, or something, is haunting the Titanic.

This is the only way to explain the series of misfortunes that have plagued the passengers of the ship from the moment they set sail: mysterious disappearances, sudden deaths. Now suspended in an eerie, unsettling twilight zone during the four days of the liner's illustrious maiden voyage, a number of the passengers—including millionaires Madeleine Astor and Benjamin Guggenheim, the maid Annie Hebbley and Mark Fletcher—are convinced that something sinister is going on . . . And then, as the world knows, disaster strikes.

Years later and the world is at war. And a survivor of that fateful night, Annie, is working as a nurse on the sixth voyage of the Titanic's sister ship, the Britannic, now refitted as a hospital ship. Plagued by the demons of her doomed first and near fatal journey across the Atlantic, Annie comes across an unconscious soldier she recognizes while doing her rounds. It is the young man Mark. And she is convinced that he did not—could not—have survived the sinking of the Titanic . . .

_____
A man hit Ava with his car, a few miles from her bungalow. He brings her flowers in hospital, and offers to do her laundry. He also brings her the letter she dropped that night on the road.

In New York, Ava's brother Michael receives the same letter. He thinks about it as he steps out of the shower into his curtainless bedroom. A naked woman stares at him from the apartment across. They both laugh and cover up with their arms.

Brother and sister cannot avoid the letter: their estranged father is dying and wants to meet. Can they forgive their father, and face each other after all these years apart? Will new unexpected friends offer the advice and comfort they need?

Nature Obscura: A City’s Hidden Natural World by Kelly Brenner

Mountaineers Books
April 1, 2020

With wonder and a sense of humor, Nature Obscura author Kelly Brenner aims to help us rediscover our connection to the natural world that is just outside our front door—we just need to know where to look.

Through explorations of a rich and varied urban landscape, Brenner reveals the complex micro-habitats and surprising nature found in the middle of a city. In her hometown of Seattle, which has plowed down hills, cut through the land to connect fresh and saltwater, and paved over much of the rest, she exposes a diverse range of strange and unknown creatures. From shore to wetland, forest to neighborhood park, and graveyard to backyard, Brenner uncovers how our land alterations have impacted nature, for good and bad, through the wildlife and plants that live alongside us, often unseen. These stories meld together, in the same way our ecosystems, species, and human history are interconnected across the urban environment.

Worn On This Day: The Clothes That Made History by Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell

Running Press Adult
November 5, 2019

This stunning visual guide is a journey of discovery through fashion’s fascinating history, one day at a time.

Beginning on January 1st and ending on December 31st, Worn On This Day looks at garments worn on monumental occasions across centuries, offering capsule fashion histories of everything from space suits to wedding gowns, Olympics uniforms, and armor. It creates thought-provoking juxtapositions, like Wallis Simpson’s June wedding and Queen Elizabeth’s June coronation, or the battered shoes Marie-Antoinette and a World Trade Center survivor wore to escape certain death, just a few calendar days apart.

In every case there is a newsworthy narrative behind the garment, whether famous and glamorous or anonymous and humble. Prominent figures like Abraham Lincoln, Marilyn Monroe, and the Duchess of Cambridge are represented alongside ordinary people caught up in extraordinary events. Beautifully illustrated throughout, Worn On This Day presents a revelatory mash-up of styles, stories, and personalities.

Yes No Maybe So by Becky Albertalli & Aisha Saeed

YES

Jamie Goldberg is cool with volunteering for his local state senate candidate—as long as he’s behind the scenes. When it comes to speaking to strangers (or, let’s face it, speaking at all to almost anyone), Jamie’s a choke artist. There’s no way he’d ever knock on doors to ask people for their votes . . . until he meets Maya.

NO

Maya Rehman’s having the worst Ramadan ever. Her best friend is too busy to hang out, her summer trip is canceled, and now her parents are separating. Why her mother thinks the solution to her problems is political canvassing—with some awkward dude she hardly knows—is beyond her.

MAYBE SO

Going door to door isn’t exactly glamorous, but maybe it’s not the worst thing in the world. After all, the polls are getting closer—and so are Maya and Jamie. Mastering local activism is one thing. Navigating the cross-cultural romance of the century is another thing entirely.

  2. What a great resource, Aj! I felt a little silly posting a picture of books on my IG this morning, but then I realized, books make me happy and they are one of the few things I can control right now, so I'm going to keep posting about things that make me happy! Plus, lots of people probably have a lot of extra time to read now!
