On The Blog This Week

  • On Monday I review No True Believers by Rabiah York Lumbard
  • On Thursday I tell you what I learned from reading 200+ “Best Books of 2019” lists.

In My Reading Life

Last week’s reading didn’t start out as planned. I should have listened to my instincts and quit The Clay Girl by Heather Tucker. It’s about a genius writer child growing up with drug-addicted parents in 1960s Canada. I didn’t quit because there are some brilliant lines, and the character’s messy, complicated family is fascinating. I got frustrated by the writing style. It’s too abstract for me. I just wanted the author to tell me what was going on! I didn’t need all the extra weirdness.

Luckily, my next book was much better. I finished No True Believers by Rabiah York Lumbard. It’s about a Muslim teen who believes her creepy neighbors are trying to frame her for a terrorist attack. I love the main character. She’s very mature and self-aware. If you like contemporary YA, you should read this book.

Right now, I’m reading The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. It’s excellent so far.

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. I hope everyone had a fun Super Bowl! I ate many nachos and paid zero attention to the game. Now that I’m thinking about it, I don’t even know who won. Oops. Nachos are distracting, okay! I only attend football parties for the food.
  2. Also, I ate nachos the day after the Super Bowl because there were leftover nacho ingredients.
  3. I survived the first week of my 30 day yoga challenge. My stomach and arms hurt so bad right now. I have really terrible balance. It’s kind of hilarious.
  4. New books!
  5. Crispy Batter finished her third Pondathon Readathon quest!

Is Anybody Out There?

Take care of yourselves and be kind to each other! See you around the blogosphere!

  1. Way to go on your yoga challenge! Soon you'll be balancing like a pro. I didn't watch the game, but the worst part is that I didn't eat any nachos either. *sad face*

  2. The Clay Girl sounds like a tough read. I don't I could have stuck with it. I watched most of the game but sadly had no nachos. I'm watching what I eat and nachos are a thing of the past I fear. *sobs loudly* Kudos on the yoga challenge! I took a six week yoga series for beginners at a local studio last year and was surprised at how demanding it was.

    1. The first few days of yoga were so easy, and then it suddenly became very not easy! Luckily, the last few days haven’t been bad.

  4. Awesome job with the yoga challenge! I'm currently trying to build my upper body strength for that reason!
I didn't watch the Superbowl but it's been a good week! I'm craving loaded nachos now. Also, adding No True Believers to my TBR! :)

I love yoga but have not been able to make it a regular part of my routine. I'm hoping I can start doing it but may wait a few months. Just love how it makes me feel afterwards.

  10. Glad to hear you're enjoying Evelyn Hugo! I only watched a little bit of the Super Bowl and since my husband is being all good with his diet, we didn't even have any yummy food for it!

  11. I'm mad for yoga, even though I have no stretchability and no balance. You gotta love all the animal poses, I think.

Can't wait to see what you think of Seven Husbands. I've heard lots of good stuff about it.

Not only did I not learn who won the Super Bowl, I didn't even know who was in it. Then again, I am off in Paris.

    Have a great week.

  14. I did watch the game (The Chiefs won by the way) but I also had some nachos and some wings. We always use the Super Bowl as an excuse to eat a bunch of junk. I have had The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo on my shelf for ages. I might need to dust it off and start reading it. Have a great week!

  16. I didn't watch the superbowl or have any of the cool snacks! I should have at least made the snacks even if I didn't watch, could have called it a non-watch party! :)

Have a great week and happy reading!
