The Sunday Post #200

The Sunday Post is hosted by The Caffeinated Book Reviewer, and The Sunday Salon is hosted by Readerbuzz. They’re a chance to recap the past week, talk about next week, and share news. It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? is hosted by Book Date. I get to tell you what I’ve read recently.

On The Blog Last Week

On The Blog This Week

  • On Tuesday I tell you what I’m thankful for.
  • On Thursday I rapid-fire review a ton of books.

In My Reading Life

Nonfiction November went much better last week. I liked both of the books I read. I finished Fear: Trump in the White House by Bob Woodward. There are a few moments where the book goes into such tedious detail that my brain switched off, but I still learned stuff. The behind-the-scenes info about the White House makes it worth reading.

I also finished Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah. I don’t know how the author survived his childhood. He got himself into so much trouble. Some of it is pretty hilarious trouble, though.

Right now, I’m reading Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything by Lydia Kang and Nate Pederson. I’m listening to Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith, and Family by Garrard Conley. Wow, those are long titles. Both books are interesting so far.

In My Internet Stalking Life

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. Secret Santa! I’m having too much fun shopping for my person. I’m really hoping all this stuff fits into a flat rate box, or the post office is going to bankrupt me.
  2. It’s almost Thanksgiving!
  3. Thanksgiving cooking shows. I wish I was good at cooking. I want to eat the stuff on the TV.
  4. Speaking of TV, who’s watching His Dark Materials on HBO/BBC? I’m cautiously optimistic that this series will be awesome.
  5. Thank you to everyone who has entered my giveaway!

  2. I have never done Black Friday shopping. I did the day after Christmas ONCE. It was when I was 8 months pregnant, and I was crushed against the door. I feared for my unborn child's life. It was too savage for me. I hope you have a great Thanksgiving, and I bet, if you tried, you could cook something delicious.

  3. I'm doing well with NonFiction November-I just need to get the reviews up now!

  4. Quackery has been on my TBR list for a while, I look forward to seeing what you think of it.
I just got sidetracked by several of your links including the Bloglovin thing, and your top ten.
Wishing you a great reading week, and a happy Thanksgiving

  5. I want to read the Born a Crime book. I saw the author on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. I had no idea that the author was a comedian. But I'm often out of the loop.

I'm glad you are enjoying Nonfiction November at last. I think I'll use the Thankfully Reading Weekend to wrap up my nonfiction reading for the month.

The quote certainly puts Black Friday into a new perspective. I'm still reeling from something I read on Mae's Food Blog this morning. Mae said that one of her Japanese neighbors asked her (in all innocence, she said) if the thanks in Thanksgiving is directed toward the Native Americans who gave us their country. Oh dear. We can be so much better than we are and have been, I hope.

    Have a wonderful week!

  6. Thank you for hosting such a generous giveaway. :) A Black Friday Readathon does seems very nice - Black Friday is now invading Portugal and for some odd reason stores have been doing Black Friday promotions all month.

    Happy readings!

  7. You are certainly reading some intriguing books - hasn't non-fiction got so much more readable than when I was a girl! And yes... I'm watching His Dark Materials and so far I'm really impressed at the quality of the acting and the production values. This week we travel to the North... Have a great week, AJ:)

  8. Glad your non-fiction experiences are improving. That's a wonderful giveaway and I entered! I should go back and enter again with another tweet. I found Nicole's discussion post very interesting, and reading the comments it seems like a lot more use Bloglovin that she thought. I don't use it that often, because I usually go off of my "My Blog List" list on my sidebar to catch up with new posts, but it seems like a lot of non-bloggers use Bloglovin and I was pleased to hear that. I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving holiday! :)

  9. His Dark Materials is not yet on our channel AJ but that's one series that I plan to watch!!!! Have fun next week.

  10. LOL!! Love that ecard. And Secret Santa sounds so fun!
    I hope you'll have a great thanksgiving.
Have a great week and happy reading!

  11. I've had pretty good luck with my Nonfiction November picks this month, too! I'm not planning on going out to the stores on Black Friday, but there are some things I want purchase online.

  12. Hmmm... maybe I'll have to read Fear. I've been a whole lot more invested in politics in the last few years, so it might be interesting to hear (I'm sure I'd do an audiobook) how things work.

  13. I try to approach every day like a readathon :) I have the audio of Born a Crime and really need to get to it. I am a pretty good cook but I don't feel like putting out the effort a lot of the time. I wish that the cooking shows could figure out how to get samples to their watchers because everything looks so good! Have a great Thanksgiving!

  14. I want to watch His Dark Materials.
I use Feedly, not Bloglovin because the word Bloglovin makes me physically ill.
    I'm doing ThankfullyReading marathon.
I shopped Black Friday once and once was enough. It was fun and I'm glad I had the experience but I don't ever need to do it again. Plus I hate shopping.
    Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

  15. You've been reading some really interesting non-fiction! I have Born a Crime on my to-read list; my husband was given the audiobook and found it really interesting.

I do use Bloglovin -- when I use anything at all. I often run out of time after I've visited my favorite blogs, as well as blogs by people who have visited me recently, or people who are doing the same meme (like Top Ten Tuesday or Sunday Post.) But when I have time after checking all of those, I use Bloglovin to zoom in on the posts that I most want to see from all the other blogs I follow.

  16. I bet Fear is super interesting.

I use Bloglovin- or at least I say I do, but in practice I get my notification emails and often skim right by 'em? My blog hopping is rather more random and unorganized haha.

I love that Black Friday graphic lol. Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!

  17. I really need to read Born a Crime. I avoid Black Friday like the plague except for some online shopping and that's a pretty strong maybe. I'd rather pay more to not have to deal with the lunatic crowds or the super early getting up. Have a great week!

  18. If I wasn't cooking, a reading marathon would sound lovely. Still, the schedule might be open enough to sneak in some pages. I hope I remember to come back this week and check out your other posts. They sound great.

Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

  19. I'll be staying home playing Clue with my family on Friday. My weekly update

  20. I can't remember the last non-fiction book I read, but I adored Trevor Noah's book!!

Have fun with Secret Santa. I always tell myself that Im going to participate then never do!

  21. I love the meme you posted!

I loved Born a Crime and didn't need to read Fear. My husband read it and shared every tedious detail with me.

  22. I loved your Black Friday pic... I hate that day and plan to either sail or work on a speech I have to give on Saturday at a St. Andrew’s Banquet. I don’t use Bloglovin’, but will have to see about signing up for your giveaway. Woodward’s book, Fear, sounds interesting but no help at all when it comes to not talking politics around the dining room table ;)

  23. I wish I could cook like they do on TV, too. I'm good at eating though :) Happy Thanksgiving!

  24. Hahaha . . . I knew there was a reason I hate Black Friday.

  25. I LOVED Born a Crime. One of my all time favorites!

  26. I hope you are enjoying Quackery. It's on my wish list. I've heard great things about the Trevor Noah book. I hope you have a great week and a Happy Thanksgiving. I will be staying in for Black Friday most likely. I'm not one for shopping the day after Thanksgiving.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I bought Fear when it was published and still haven't picked it up! I'm intimidated by that kind of political non-fiction. I hope you have a great Thanksgiving!

  28. I love the RESIST pie. That's one thing I miss about holidays at my ex in-laws, everyone was a liberal. There was zero political drama. Ha ha.

We are having Thanksgiving on Wednesday because my son has to work through dinner time on Thursday and Friday. I wish all nonessential businesses would at least close at noon, so everyone could spend time with family and friends. 😕

Have a wonderful new week and a great Thanksgiving! 🌞

  29. Have a great holiday! And that resist pie is awesome. Lol.

I love Lydia Kang - that one is on my list!

  30. Happy thanksgiving to you and your family. Here in Germany we don´t celebrate it but we have something like it in October.

  31. We mostly do our Black Friday shopping online these days. Some years I have been at Joann Fabrics for the deals or Menards. Not this year though. We are going to cook some great food, do some projects and relax. No I hate Bloglovin. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend and I hope you get some tasty eats.
