Top Ten Tuesday: You Remind Me Of Me

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is fictional characters who are similar to me. Yay! A narcissism post! Honestly, there aren’t many fictional characters who are like me because I’m way too squishy for life-threatening adventures. If I was a book character, readers would be treated to the thrilling experience of seeing me type on a computer while re-watching Game of Thrones. But, I’m going to give this list my best shot. Here are ten characters who remind me of me.

You Remind Me Of Me

1. Elise From After Zero

Elise has the same mental disorder I had as a child (and maybe still have? Who knows? It’s dark and messy inside my body.) The author clearly did her research and gets the disorder 100% correct.

2. Ramsay Bolton Brienne From A Song Of Ice And Fire Series

You didn’t think we could get through a whole list without a Game of Thrones character, did you? (Be grateful that Ramsay Bolton isn’t on this list.) There’s a scene in the TV show where Brienne is telling Pod about a party her father hosted. The boys at the party were nice to her face and then laughed at her behind her back. Brienne’s story basically sums up my whole teenage experience. I watch this show for the schemes and murders, not to relive my childhood!

3. Samwell From A Song Of Ice And Fire Series

You didn’t think we could get through a whole list without TWO Game of Thrones characters, did you? Me and Sam are both squishy and severely lacking in athletic ability. If I got sent to the Night’s Watch, I’d curl up in the library and promptly freeze to death. Now my watch has ended . . . .

4. Hermione from The Harry Potter Series

I bet Hermione would be on a lot of readers’ lists. She’s the ultimate bookworm. Harry and Ron wouldn’t have survived book 1 if Hermione didn’t live in the library and pay attention in class.

5. Cath From Fangirl

Another character that I expect would make a lot of readers’ lists. I’ve never written fanfiction, but I did study writing in college, and my experience with it was almost identical to Cath’s. (Well, minus the nice boy. For mysterious reasons, that part didn’t happen to me.)

6. Felicity From The Lady’s Guide To Petticoats And Piracy

If I lived in the 1700s, I’d probably be Felicity. I’m more interested in desserts than marriage proposals, and I could totally see myself blurting out disgusting medical facts at fancy upper-class parties. Felicity is more ambitious than me, but we’re both painfully awkward and hate hugs.

7. Travis From The Serpent King

I’m pretty sure that narcissism is the whole reason this book resonates with me. Like the characters, I grew up in a small town with conservative values. Since I was an utter weirdo at school, I turned to books and the Internet. I understand Travis’s desire to live in a fantasy world. Sometimes the real world is so irritating that you’d rather just make up a fake world and live there.

8. Esther From The Bell Jar

I think I’m pretty good at keeping a chill exterior while everything is secretly going to heck. That’s what Esther does in the beginning of this book. She has problems, but to the outside world, she appears successful, intelligent, beautiful. I’m . . . none of those things, but I am quite talented at maintaining illusions.

9. Sym From The White Darkness

Me and Sym both had all-consuming obsessions with Antarctica when we were young teenagers. Just like Sym, I had a shelf full of “ice books.” I read everything I could about Scott’s failed attempt to reach the South Pole in the early 1900s. Also like Sym, I was more comfortable with my imagination than with real people. Unlike Sym, I never believed I was in a relationship with the ghost of a dead Antarctic explorer. That’s weird, even by my standards.

10. Jenny From Furiously Happy

Okay, I know that Jenny Lawson is a real person, but this is a hard list! My brain is getting a workout right now. I think me and Jenny Lawson both embrace the ridiculousness of life. We have similar brands of self-deprecating humor. Also, we both love animals. (Though, I prefer my animals to be alive or deep fried, not taxidermied and covered in glitter.)

Well, that was an uncomfortable public therapy session. Which characters are you most like?

  1. The mere mention of Travis has broken my heart and got me all teary. That precious cupcake of a character deserved better. Somebody hand me some Kleenex... *weeps loudly*

  2. Jenny Lawson is hilarious. I loved her first book but yep, like you I prefer my animals alive. I'm seeing LOTS of Hermoine today :)

    1. I was pretty sure Hermione would be on everybody’s list. She’s probably the most famous bookworm ever.

  5. Cath! Totally who I thought of when I saw this prompt!

  6. I love that you picked Samwell for this list! I think everyone wants to be Jon or Dany etc. but Sam's so loyal and always tries his best, he's a great character too 😊

  7. Yeah, Hermione and Cath would totally be on my list too. I'd add Luna from the HP series as well. This is a tough question though...not sure who else I could think of.

  11. Great list! I definitely relate to Hermione as well, and although I haven't read Game of Thrones, Sam and I sound like a perfect match! I swear, I'm physically incapable of doing more than 5 minutes of physical activity without dying. Haha.

    1. Haha, when I was in school, my gym teachers hated me because I had no athletic ability whatsoever. I messed up everything.

  12. I have to say, Rowling created quite a character when she created Hermione, because I have seen her on so many lists. It's pretty amazing that so many people see themselves in her.

    1. Yep. Hermione and Matilda were the only book-obsessed characters I came across as a kid.

  13. Yaassss, Hermione! I agree with Samwell, too, he's definitely more into books than adventure.

  15. I still need to read Pirates and Piracy!

I ADORE Cath so I'm happy to see her on your list. I used to write a lot of fanfiction, but I was a lot younger than Cath.

    1. Lady’s Guide is a fun book. I think everybody should read it. My friends used to write Harry Potter fanfiction in middle school, but I was never interested in fanfiction for some reason.

  16. No nice boy? I did meet my husband in college... over the internet, so I guess he counts. I did put Fangirl on my list this week. I can relate to Brienne... not about the people being nice to her face part, but the whole can't find a guy part. Good thing there's the internet, or I probably would have ended up marrying my house or something.

    1. Haha, I still haven’t found a nice boy. Maybe I should try the internet. I just have to figure out which bit of the internet isn’t full of creepy dudes.

  17. I've seen a few Cath's on these lists. I feel like as book bloggers most of us relate to her. I had a hard time with this one this week, we ended up just taking a quiz to find our top three fictional characters.

  18. Love Brienne, lol that you wrote Ramsay first! And yes to Sam, but I'd get lost in the books, and be no use to anyone either.

    1. I was so tempted to put Ramsay on this list. It would not have been accurate because I’m nothing like him, but it would have been hilarious.

  19. I was the Hermione style swot at school who always wanted the best marks but I wasn't as brainy or as much of a know it all! I have a similar physique to Sam which I'm trying to work on and I was as popular with boys as Brienne was! Great list!

    1. I was like a stupid Hermione at school. I read a lot and wanted to know everything, but I got terrible grades because I’m lazy and not very bright.

  20. LOVE this list! After Zero sounds so awesome, and I am really glad that the author did it such justice! Also, any mention of The Serpent King is a good list! I am DYING at the book with the girl who is in love with a Antarctic explorer ghost bwhahah 😂 And is it weird that I am now kind of uhhh high key wanting to read it for that reason?? Fabulous list, I am impressed you made it to 10 I think I could find maybe 2 if I tried really hard.

  21. "a narcissism post" lol. Love the Sam reference. The only part of life at the Wall that even sounded remotely compelling (and even that, honestly, was only relative) was the underground libraries Sam found. The Citadel at least is a warmer location! And Brienne- yeah. I think a lot of people can relate to how she was treated, sadly.

I loved Cath's story in Fangirl!

    1. I would like to stand on top of the wall and see everything. After that, I want to go home! I don’t want to freeze in the zombie-infested North for the rest of my life.

  24. The only one of these books I read was the Bell Jar-which I read probably 25 years ago after reading a biography of Plath (I’ve always liked her poetry). Now I am curious about you :)

As for me, I don’t know if there is anyone character I feel like is a model of me. I certainly fantasize about being one of the characters in an Edward Abbey or Jack London book or maybe Norm in Normal MacLean’s novella, “A River Runs THrough It”

  25. Oh, now I want to go read The Bell Jar, White Darkness, and After Zero.

You made me laugh out loud twice--with "That's weird, even by my standards" and "uncomfortable public therapy session."

TRAAAAVIS. It's almost like MANCHEEEEE! Every time I see some thickset kid in a long black coat, I think of him, and want to go give the kid a hug.

  26. Okay, I think I have some similarities to you too! I really agree with the Esther one where you seem all cool and collected, but inside everything is going a bit crazy. And I also am studying writing at uni so Cath, you and I can all group together on that. Ah, Hermoine, a character bookworms have related to since day 1 ;)

    ReplyDelete
  27. This sounds like quite the difficult post to write and quite personal too. It was interesting to read to which characters you had similarities and what those similarities were. And Hermione is definitely a character a lot of bookworm can relate too I think. Felicity sounds like a quirky character.

  28. I soooo relate to Cath and Hermione!! I am such the obsessive fangirl about characters I love... And bookworm... what blogger doesn't relate?! ❤️
