The Sunday Post #197

Happy Cinco de Mayo to everyone who's celebrating.

The Sunday Post is hosted by The Caffeinated Book Reviewer, and The Sunday Salon is hosted by Readerbuzz. They’re a chance to recap the past week, talk about next week, and share news. It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? is hosted by Book Date. I get to tell you what I’ve read recently.

On The Blog Last Week

On The Blog This Week

  • On Tuesday I talk about characters who remind me of me.
  • On Saturday there’s a book haul.

In My Reading Life

Last week, I finally finished Annabel by Kathleen Winter. It’s about an intersex child growing up in rural Labrador in the 1960s. The book took me 10 forevers to finish, but I liked the complicated parent/child relationships.

Then I read Vivian Apple at the End of the World by Katie Coyle. This book has so many twists, and I didn’t see any of them coming. It’s set in a world that’s being destroyed by natural disasters. America has been taken over by a religious cult. When Vivian Apple’s parents go missing, she sets out to find them.

Right now, I’m reading Vivian Apple Needs a Miracle by Katie Coyle. I’m enjoying it so far.

In My Internet Stalking Life

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. Game of Thrones! Actually, episode 3 disappointed me a little because there were no surprising deaths, and the battle strategy made no sense to me, but IT LOOKED COOL! Bring on the next episode.
  2. Speaking of TV, how did it take me a month to learn about Mummies Unwrapped? If you think mummies are awesome, watch this show on the Discovery Channel.
  3. Walking the dog and looking at deer. There are so many deer around here right now.
  4. My baby niece, Brooklyn, is starting to make sounds that aren’t grunts or headache-inducing screeches. She has suddenly become very talkative. Too bad nobody can understand her.
  5. If you have 40 minutes to kill, and you’d like to know how Game of Thrones is made, check this out:

Take care of yourselves and be kind to each other! See you around the blogosphere!

  1. Baby babble is fun to listen to. Your niece sounds like a real bundle of joy. Thanks for sharing my post (always appreciate it). I still don't watch GoT, but I am ok with it. Sorry there weren't enough interesting deaths this week, though.

    1. My niece is a bundle of joy when she’s not screaming. She does an awful lot of screaming. Usually in the middle of the night. :)

  2. Love the pic of Ned in a sombrero, lol! I also thought last week's episode was a bit disappointing- glad I'm not the only one, lol. With all of the heavy foreshadowing from Episode 2, the characters who didn't make it weren't a shock at all. :/

    1. I kept waiting for something surprising to happen in that battle, but nope. The only surprising thing was the pointless Dothraki charge.

  3. Happy Cinco de Mayo. I can currently hear the festival kicking off , let's how close we live. Drummers are a drumming and people are already looking for there parking spot, and setting up lawn chairs.

    1. I don’t live close enough to hear festivals, but I know there’s a big one for Cinco de Mayo.

  4. GoT! I also thought there would be more deaths of more importance. But there are three more episodes for people to kick the bucket still. Your niece sounds super cute! Have a great week!

  5. Vivian Apple and the End of the World seems a very interesting book. Love stories with unexpected plot twists. :) I thought there would be more major deaths in the last episode of GoT (some deaths were expected and yet I was still hoping they wouldn't die). I guess they needed to keep some characters alive to kill in the next episodes.

    Happy readings! ;)

  7. Happy Cinco de Mayo! I wish we had margaritas on the menu today, but I'll have to make do with a glass of wine later on. Glad you finished Annabel and mostly enjoyed it... I remember adding it to my tbr on another blogger's recommendation quite a while ago, but haven't gotten around to reading it. Have a great week!

    1. The characters in Annabel are interesting, but there’s no plot, so it took me a long time to get through.

  8. The Mexican food restaurant down the road sells margaritas for 99 cents on Cinco de Mayo. I think I need to take a walk down there before they run out.

Let us know how book two of the Vivian Apple stories works out...I'm curious.

I speak baby and I can tell you that your niece is basically telling you thank you for taking care of her and that she loves you very much!

    1. I didn’t like book 2 as much as the first one. I think the characters relied too much on luck and coincidence to survive.

  10. I feel the same about Game of Thrones! Although, I accidentally read a spoiler that said my favourite character would die but that didn't end up happening, so I was relieved as well :)

I read Vivian Apple, I thought it was pretty good, I never read the next one but glad you are enjoying it. :)

  14. I think that I have the audio for Vivian Apple. I will have to look. I was really surprised by a few things in the last GoT episode. My only real complaint would be that it was so dark that it was hard to see what was going on in some scenes. I can't wait for tonight's episode. I love it when babies start jabbering. Have a great week!

  15. I love when babies start making noises like they're actually trying to talk. I remember when my niece did that, and we would all be like, hmm, I wonder what she thinks she's saying!

  17. Babies "talking" is so funny to me. They seem so certain they are communicating. And I guess they are. But in a language only they understand.Ha.

Last week's GoT... so dark that I felt like I was watching thru a dirty window. I probably missed a lot. I didn't necessarily enjoy it but I also couldn't look away. I expected more major character deaths, for sure.

  18. Actually baby babble is fascinating. They repeat some sounds over and over because they are strengthening both their hard and soft palettes in preparation for the sounds they'll need to replicate and if you listen closely, you'll realise that in amongst some of that babble are already names or sounds of names she has identified... You'll also realise when you copy and interact that she spends a great deal of time looking at your lips - which is why I NEVER know why so many shows designed for babies insist on using puppets with no moving lips! Sorry... rant over... Have an enjoyable week:))

  21. We saw a fox yesterday when we were walking Cass, which is kind of scary because we live in town. I can honestly say I liked episode 3 more than I did episode 4 last night. To me it was the worst one of the season yet. And I can't stand Cersei and I'm hoping for about 5 different people to take her out!

  31. There seems to be so much hate for season 8 of GoT going around but I've loved the four episodes so far and have liked it better than season 7. I guess a lot of people are going to get mad when they see how it ends and I hope I'm not one of them! Let Jon go north to join Tormund and Ghost and Tyrion take the Iron Throne! Or Jon can take the throne and Tyrion can join Sansa at Winterfell!
