Tag: Birthday Books

It’s my birthday today, so it seemed like a logical time to do The Birthday Book Tag. This tag was created by Antonia @ Always Books. Let’s get into it.

The Birthday Book Tag

1. Birthday Cake: A Book With A Cliché Plot, But You Love It Anyway

The Nevermoor series has the most cliché plot ever. It’s about a “chosen one” child who doesn’t understand her magical abilities. An eccentric mentor character whisks her away from her awful parents and brings her to a fantasy world where she has to defeat a mysteriously terrifying bad guy. You’ve heard this story before, right? It’s cliché, but I love Nevermoor so much! It’s bizarre and darkly hilarious. It reminds me of the excitement and curiosity I felt when I read Alice in Wonderland for the first time as a preteen. I want the next Nevermoor book right now.

2. Party Guests: Most Anticipated Upcoming Releases

Well, the next Nevermoor book, obviously. I’m also nervously excited for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins. The Hunger Games is one of my favorite series ever, and I don’t want this new book to ruin my happiness. I hope it’s awesome. A non-series book I’m excited for is The Animals at Lockwood Manor by Jane Healey. It actually came out a few days ago, but I haven't gotten it yet. It’s historical fiction about a woman who’s trying to protect a museum’s collection of taxidermy animals from the bombs of WWII. There’s a haunted house involved.

3. Birthday Presents: A Book That Surprised You

Can I say Nevermoor again? Probably not. The last book that surprised me (in a good way) is The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I didn’t think I’d be massively interested in the love life of a fictional movie star, but I was. Evelyn is a complicated character. She knows what she wants, and she’ll do anything to get it. She’s cunning, but she’s also loving and loyal.

4. Happy Birthday Song: A Book That Deserves The Hype

I have to go with a book written by my favorite human, Trevor Noah. His memoir and TV show both fully deserve the hype. He’ll make you laugh so much that you won’t realize you’re learning important stuff.

5. Music: A Book With Memorable Quotes

I’m not a reader who collects quotes, but for some reason, I remember a lot of quotes from Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach. I read it for a philosophy class in college. I guess all the essays I had to write made it stick with me. These are the quotes I remember:

6. Getting Older: A Book You Read When You Were Young, But Would Appreciate More If You’d Read It When You Were Older

The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. This book was required reading in high school. The first time I read it, I hated it. Holden is an insufferable brat. I couldn’t stand reading about him. I reread the book a few years later when I was in college and was shocked. I actually liked it. Holden is still a whiny brat, but I appreciate the skill that went into creating his character. Learning about fiction writing definitely changed how I look at books.

7. Birthday Memories: A Book That Makes You Happy

All of Fredrik Backman’s books make me happy. The first one I read is My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She’s Sorry. It’s about a seven-year-old girl who goes on an apology tour to fix the mistakes made by her eccentric granny. The book is surprisingly deep. And surprisingly hilarious.

  8. I'm a day late, but HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! I do want to read Seven Husbands...so I'm glad that was a pleasant surprise for you. :) I never had to read Catcher in the Rye, so I just read it by myself at one point and I did like it, but it's not an all time favorite.

  10. I wasn't a fan of Catcher in The Rye but I still found it hard to put down.

Evelyn Hugo is one I've just started and I'm enjoying it so far! As is Nevermoor but that's taking me forever because I'm reading it with my kid. :)

  12. Happy happy birthday! I have not read any of these books, but Catcher in the Rye, and I don't know, I really hated Holden. I do believe, that there are many books I read in high school, which I would appreciate more now, because I have the life experience to really understand it more.

  13. Happy birthday! I feel the same way about The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. I didn't originally pre-order it because $25 was too much for a book, but now that it's come down in price, I did. Hopefully I won't be disappointed.

  17. Happy(late) birthday! I need to try Evelyn Hugo, I loved her other one, Daisy Jones and the Six. Looking forward to the new Hunger Games, and isn't it a prequel? So even worst case scenario, it can't mess things up much. (Also, I tagged you in a Liebster award, if you fancy it :)

  21. I'm sorry I missed your birthday! I've been unable to do some things (sleep at night, blog) and compulsively doing others (baking, writing, scrolling Twitter). As I told my niece who just had her birthday, may you never again have such a weird one.
