In My Reading Life
I’m writing this post on Friday morning because I’m
doing the 24 in 48 Readathon this weekend. Hopefully I’m getting through a lot
of Sherlock Holmes right now.
Last week, I finished The
Sign Of Four by Arthur Conan Doyle.
This is the second Sherlock Holmes novel. Like many classics, it’s stuffed full
of racism, but I found this book more compelling than the first one. There’s a
missing treasure chest, a boat chase, and a very random love (?) story. I’m
also happy to report that the narrative structure is less jarring than in the
first book.
Right
now, I’m reading The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. This one is a short story collection. So far,
so good. I really liked the first two stories.
In The Rest Of My Life
Five
things that made me happy last week:
- It was my birthday. I had chocolate cake, Chinese food, and complete social isolation.
- Since I’m not working and stuck in the house (thanks, deadly virus), I used the time to apply for a job I really want but am probably not qualified for. Cross your fingers.
- Miracle Workers: Dark Ages is
saving my sanity right now. If you’re feeling bored and unmotivated like I am,
check out this show. It’s stupidly hilarious.
- I survived two brutal at-home yoga classes. I like at-home yoga. No one can see me fall.
- I was able to renew my driver’s license online. I feel like I artfully avoided a day at the DMV. This is an accomplishment.
It’s Lonely In Here . . .
Take care of yourselves and be kind to each
other! See you around the blogosphere!
Happy belated birthday and good luck with the job app!
ReplyDeleteAt home yoga is definitely my go-to! I definitely feel more relaxed practicing at home anyway. :)
Have a virus-free week! Happy reading!

At home yoga. Are those youtube clips? or something else?
ReplyDeleteI am glad there was cake and yummy food for your birthday. My daughter told me, that women never feel they are qualified, and therefore, miss out on opportunities. While men, always think they are qualified. Apply - do it, do it, do it!!! You knew know.
ReplyDeleteI do like how staying home allows for more reading...and actually, being retired, my life hasn't changed that much. Except for going out. But I'm finding ways to adjust.
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday.
I'm glad you were able to have cake for your birthday. It was my grandson's first birthday yesterday and we were only able to have a tiny get-together. Wyatt didn't care though. He had a good time.
ReplyDeleteIt has been difficult. Even things I thought might go on, like our birding outings outdoors, have now been cancelled. I miss the Y a lot. I don't even care if I fall in yoga in public. I am going to try doing the online videos the Y sent before they closed.
Good luck with the job possibility.
I'm also reading Sherlock Holmes, mostly the short stories since they're short and I can focus at least on that short amount of reading. I just finished The Memoirs and now am on The Return. Happy belated birthday and good luck on your job hunt.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, AJ! Chocolate cake sounds perfect :) I am sorry to hear that you are not currently working but good luck with getting the job you really want! I haven't read Holmes but I want to at some point. Have a happy and safe week!
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a great birthday and fingers crossed for the new job!
ReplyDeleteHooray for yummy food and chocolate cake. I haven't tried any at-home yoga or any at-home exercise but I need to look into it. Good luck with the job prospect!
ReplyDeleteI’m glad you could at least enjoy takeout and cake 🎂
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your job application.
Wishing you a great reading week, be well!
Happy birthday, once again!! I loved "I had chocolate cake, Chinese food, and complete social isolation." Can't tell if that last one is supposed to be a good thing or a bad thing. LOL!

Happy Birthday - I hope the social isolation was more of a treat than a chore... And best of luck with the job offer and I hope you continue to enjoy Sherlock during your readathon - it's something I haven't yet had a chance to take part in, but it's certainly on my bucket list! Have a peaceful week, AJ:).
ReplyDeleteSir Arthur Conan Doyle and his Sherlock Holmes stories are my FAVORITE! I have read and reread the mysteries ever since I was a child. And happy belated birthday! Cake and Chinese food sounds like a perfect day. I also love at-home yoga so no one can see the weird faces I make lol.
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a great birthday! And wishing you the best for that job, I'm applying for everything I can find haha.

Crossing my fingers for your job AJ! And I am doing online yoga classes too what with the covid and all LOL
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday (late)! We did lots of sleeping this spring break week. I was feeling rather surreal although I like being at home all the time.
ReplyDeleteHave a healthy week and enjoy some good reads!

Miracle Workers is probably my favorite show right now. So funny. Happy birthday and good luck on the job front!
ReplyDeleteNatflix&Books
Happy Birthday! I love at home workouts on You Tube, tai chi and qigong are my favorites.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! Sounds like a good way to celebrate! I'm a big fan of at home yoga. I've done some at various studios and gyms but at home is way more fun. Have a great week!
ReplyDelete"I had chocolate cake, Chinese food, and complete social isolation." That actually sounds about like the perfect day!Hope you had a great b- day!!
ReplyDeleteIt's always jarring to read older books and see all the racism and problematic elements. Like, really makes you wonder how people could just be so casual about that sort of thing. A different world, for sure.
Be safe and take care this week!
Glad to hear you had a good birthday especially in the face of everything going on. Hope you get the job, and yay for avoiding the DMV! :)
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday. Friday was my husband's birthday. My daughter made brownies for him. My weekly update
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday AJ! I hope it was a fantastic day, despite the state of everything. Fingers crossed for your dream job AND OMG, good on you for getting through yoga! It is a hard discipline!
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a happy birthday. I still remember a Sherlock Holmes inspired short story collection I read a couple years ago - For the Love of the Game, I think? Something like that. I wasn't a big Sherlock Holmes fan before, but it was a good book :) Take care of you and yours!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! That all sounds yummy!
ReplyDeleteHome Yoga is my favorite. I have no idea what I am doing and only me and the furbabies know. :)
Take care and Stay Safe!
Happy Birthday! Sounds good to me - chocolate cake and Chinese food :) I should try home yoga. Sounds like fun. Have a great week and stay safe!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the job application! I hate interacting with people in real life so this lockdown in the UK won't bother me at all. I have a warm home, food, books, dvds...that's about all I need!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you had a good birthday <3 Crossing my fingers for your job application, you can do this!! <3
ReplyDeleteSending you all the love and positive vibes!
So glad to hear you're doing well! I also like at-home yoga. I can be totally clumsy and no one will see! :)
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you are making the most of the situation. Happy belated Birthday! I prefer not to go to the DMV either, but I'm required to get a Real ID before November (I'm hoping they'll change that date), and so am a little nervous about whether that will happen. I still have a few months to worry about that though . . . I hope you continue to stay well and safe.
