The Sunday Post #188

No babies were swallowed in the making of this photo.

The Sunday Post is hosted by The Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to recap the past week, talk about next week, and share news. It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? is hosted by Book Date. I get to tell you what I’ve read recently.

On The Blog Last Week

On The Blog This Week

  • On Tuesday I talk about how I’d die in a fantasy story.
  • On Thursday I wrap up February.
  • On Saturday I review two Cybils Award finalists.

In My Reading Life

Last week, I finished two audiobooks. I listened to The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock Holmes is a fascinating character, but the structure of the stories got repetitive. Someone shows up at Sherlock’s house and tells him a mystery. He investigates for about 2 minutes and solves the mystery long before I could. The end.

Then I listened to Amos Fortune, Free Man by Elizabeth Yates. I found this one boring. It’s about an African boy who is brought to America as a slave. When he’s 60 years old, he buys his freedom, starts a business, and becomes a town leader. The book covers 91 years in 192 pages. Most of the events are glossed over too quickly.

I’m still slogging through Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. This book is taking me 10 forevers to finish. I still have 300+ pages left to read.

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. A giveaway! Entering my giveaway is good for my self-esteem. I’m always secretly paranoid that no one will enter. Then I’d be sad.
  2. I think I’m back to my regular blogging schedule. I love baby Brooklyn, but 2-week-old babies have zero respect for your plans.
  3. I went for a long walk. I wanted to walk longer, but it started snowing, and I was not amused. There was ice in my hair when I got home.
  4. I started re-watching Game of Thrones. I love that show.
  5. New books.

Hello, I need friends

  2. That's a good list of things that made you happy this week!

  3. As a mom of three, I can verify that babies don't care about your schedule and adaptation is the best choice. Love the snake and would definitely seek this for shower gifts. Brooklyn is adorable.

    1. Yeah, Brooklyn is very good at keeping everybody awake all night and disrupting all plans during the day. :)

  4. If Brooklyn ends up having a fear of snakes, you can also look back at this photo as the start of everything :) She is a doll but babies (and teenagers) have no respect for schedules. Have a great week!

  5. Good luck with Little Women! I'd never even attempt it! XD I thought about re-watching Game of Thrones before the new season, but I'd never make it all the way through.

    1. I’m going to try really hard to make it through every GoT episode. I’m losing hope, though. There are so many episodes!

  6. Good luck with Little Women, I don't think that's one I would ever read.

  7. Ice in your hair is really no fun at all.
Babies and Teenagers have no respect for your plans...just in case you didn't know that :)
One day I will watch Game of Thrones again, just hard to watch with the kids around.

Have a great week, AJ! Happy Reading! xx

    1. Yeah, watching GoT with a kid would be awkward. Luckily the only kid in my house is a baby, and she doesn’t mind all the beheadings.

  8. Hahaha don't worry I am entering your giveaway AJ and thank you! Now of course a two weeks baby has no respect for your plans! Patience, patience. And I love GOT! I hope you'll get to walk more next week (I turn crazy when I can't walk every day!).

  12. I like Sherlock Holmes. I read the books and Tantor Audio had a freebie so I listened to that awhile ago. I enjoy hearing about smart people; I think I always hope to learn something.

I think people of many ages don't respect other people's time or schedule.

You write the very bet Sunday posts! I enjoy them. Have a great week! Anne - Books of My Heart

  13. Aww such a cute pic. :) I've never read Sherlock Holmes but I kinda got that impression about the stories, more or less? They've just never appealed to me and it sounds like maybe in this case my gut feeling is right lol.

Walking is good. Ice is not. I'll be glad when it's less snowy so I can walk outside again, I get bored w/ treadmill walking.

Game of Thrones is getting closer- yay!

  18. Amos Forever sounds like it could have been fascinating if it had been expanded on. Too bad it was so condensed. I tried to read Little Women once many years ago and just couldn't do it. LOLing at the Sherlock Holmes breakdown. :)

  19. I'm re-watching Game of Thrones too - so many great scene I've forgotten! In the UK they split Little Women into two books, the first bit is a children's book the second one is more adult. Reading them now I think I like the second one best? It's less episodic. Although I hate John Brooke - Meg deserves better.

    1. Haha, I don’t hate John Brooke (yet), but his character is underdeveloped. Meg deserves someone with a personality.

  20. Haha! Yes, babies have absolutely no cares about your plans - they prefer to make you change plans to suit theirs. ;) She's so cute though! I hope you get through Little Women soon. So it's one you're having to slog through. I went snowshoeing yesterday - at 19 degrees and while snowing. I was frozen when I got home. But hubs and I were the only ones on the trail and it was gorgeous! Have a great week, AJ!

  22. Welcome to Brooklyn!

If I had first read Little Women as an adult, I would not have loved it. As a child, I did, and read it a few times. Then, again, when I read it as an adult...it was moralistic and not that interesting.

Enjoy your week, and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES
