The Sunday Post #176

Bigfoot's favorite blog.

The Sunday Post is hosted by The Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to recap the past week, talk about next week, and share news. It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? is hosted by Book Date. I get to tell you what I’ve read recently.

On The Blog Last Week

On The Blog This Week

  • On Tuesday I show you festive holiday book photos.
  • On Thursday I list some oddities that I discovered in this blog’s comment section.
  • On Saturday I review two books about religion gone wrong.

In My Reading Life

Last week, I finished A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson. It’s entertaining and quick to read, but it’s also a little disappointing. Whenever the trail became difficult, the author and his friend quit hiking and hitchhiked to an easier section. I wanted more hiking!

Then, I read The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis. Any kid who knows what “breadwinner” means could probably predict what’s going to happen in this story. Despite the predictability, it’s an informative look at daily life for children in Taliban-controlled areas.

After that, I read The Watsons Go To Birmingham—1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis. I guess this would be considered a reread because a teacher read it to our class when I was 9 or 10. I remembered the rebellious older brother and the ugly brown car. I did not remember how terrifying the ending is! I liked it.

Right now, I’m finally (!) reading The Last Time We Say Goodbye by Cynthia Hand. There have been a few moments of gag-inducing melodrama, but there’s a ghost, so I’m thrilled.

In My Internet Stalking Life

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. Christmas candy! Yes, I’m overeager about Christmas and have already acquired massive amounts of red and green candy.
  2. Ditto cookies. I already have Christmas cookies.
  3. I’ve been watching holiday baking shows on the Food Network. I do not have the patience to make my cookies look that pretty. I tend to get bored and eat them during the decorating process.
  4. Staying with the food theme, I ate a yummy pizza.
  5. I won a book giveaway!

  7. Breadwinner looks interesting. Somehow books about the Taliban have been making it into my circles a lot lately. That's curious. There's an award for bad sec scenes xD that's hilarious... Oh, congrats on winning the giveaway :)

  8. I haven't started baking Christmas cookies yet but I did spend the morning looking for new recipes to try. I still need to buy Christmas candy too. I'm all about the red and green wrappers even if it's the same candy I would normally buy throughout the year, lol.

  9. I never hoard emails! I delete them as soon as they're not needed anymore. It's bitten me in the butt a few times, but I'd rather have a neat inbox. I really need to go through all of my saved emails, but that's a problem for another day.

We've been baking a lot this month! The kids love their cookies. ;)

    Have a lovely reading week!

  10. WowI I don't know, I am sort of impressed that the author admitted he skipped the hard parts of the trail. I have that Hand book. A little melodrama is usually ok by me, as long as I'm in the mood for it. What did you win? I haven't won anything in a long time, so I need to live vicariously through you. With the food too, because I can't eat all that stuff.

  16. Pizza is the best. And then Christmas cookies. and then maybe M&M's at Christmas time? You know, just sitting out in a bowl so you can swipe some every time you go by. Life is good. Those are nice happy things. :)

Oh my gosh that's funny about the Bryson book- they hitchhiked past the tough areas! That cracked me up (and I'd probably do it too).

  19. Congrats on the book win! I really wish someone would make me some cookies but the only person willing to actually make food in my house is me so I guess it might be a while before I get a homemade cookie. Have a great week!

  20. I'm a total email hoarder too. I should read that post! Some of the middle-grade book have really disturbing endings, the kind of thing that would give nightmares. Enjoy your week, AJ!

  21. I made Christmas toffee yesterday and omg, it was amazing. I need to make more...and more Christmas cookies in general, though I really need to watch it and not over eat this holiday season. LOL I'm loving all the Food Network Holiday cooking shows too!

  23. Bigfoot has good taste. 👍✨

I have had neither Christmas cookies, nor Christmas candy, yet. I feel deprived. 😭

I am looking forward to your interesting comments post. 🙌🙌🙌

    Have a wonderful week. 🌞

  24. I keep thinking about trying to bake something but I never get by the thinking phase! I tend to buy tasty treats from the shops instead! Thanks for the shout out!

  25. I feel like I've seen The Last Time We Say Goodbye a LOT. I'll be interested to see what you think of it. I typically have no sweet tooth but my husband came home with some Lindor gingerbread truffles yesterday and I'm in heaven. Yay for winning the book giveaway!

  26. That hiking book seems like the author is so lame, but also how I'd want to hike. LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I will make Christmas cookies closer to Christmas but I have all my cards in the mail and presents bought. And I am always eating candy lol

    ReplyDelete
  28. Haha on the taste-testing the cookies as you decorate them.

  29. Christmas cookies and candy are top priority this time of year.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Bake your own cookies and eat them as you go... I think I should adopt that practice this year:). Have a great week, AJ.

  31. I am a sucker for seasonal cakes and snacks. All the Christmas-themed food!!!! Lol ;)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I am excited for Christmas as well! I haven't baked anything except Empire Biscuits with my mom and SIL, but I have watched holiday baking shows. Lol. We are planning a baking day soon, we will see how much we actually get done..

I loved A Walk in the Woods! Lol. I do felt like it kind of just trickled out at the end though. I liked their foibles and knowing their own limits, but there could have been more hiking for sure. :)

    Congrats on your win!

  33. I discovered the Deborah Ellis books through 1001 Children's Books list, and I loved them. It's a trilogy, I think. Unless this is a new book.

I am mad for baking these days. I predict I will go crazy baking Christmas things this year, especially cookies.

  34. Interesting reads this week. Breadwinner sounds like it'd be interesting.

Hahaha - no one can blame you for the candy and cookies!

  35. I've been watching the Christmas baking shows too. That's the closest I'll get to Christmas cookies. Too much fuss for me! Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  36. "oddities that I discovered in this blog’s comment section" - you mean the "interesting" spam comments we all get lol. I read The Watsons Go To Birmingham—1963 as a kid too. I honestly can't remember what happens especially what that terrifying ending could be.
I recently won a book giveaway myself! It's only happened a couple of times in the past eight years but it is always thrilling nonetheless. What did you win? I've never decorated cookies. I tried to decorate cupcakes once with my mom and we both sucked at it. Maybe in the far off future I'll try again.

  37. I remember The Watsons! Well... I remember reading it, but I don't remember the ending, haha.

Christmas candies and cookies are the best! I usually end up missing out on some of the sales that happen shortly after. Congratulations on the book giveaway!

  38. Congratulations on winning a book giveaway, yay! And yes for eating all the cookies! I stocked up on a ridiculous amount of boxes of candy cane joe joe's from Trader Joe's (they're like Oroes) and between them and baking I've definitely been in cookie heaven too.

  41. You have the best 5 things! We have been so lazy this week. But next week we have a lot more activities happening. I'm trying to get ahead so I can just relax and read whatever I want the last couple weeks of December here. Here's to a great week with lots of cookies!
