The Sunday Post #154

I hope you ended your July 4th celebration with the same number of fingers that you began it with.

The Sunday Post is hosted by The Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to recap the past week, talk about next week, and share news. It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? is hosted by Book Date. I get to tell you what I’ve read recently.

On The Blog Last Week

On The Blog This Week

  • On Tuesday I show you some books I recently added to my wish list.
  • On Thursday we discuss the best books I read in the first half of 2018.
  • On Saturday I review two classic short story collections.

In My Reading Life

Last week, I finished As Brave As You by Jason Reynolds. I think 400+ pages is too long for a character-driven middlegrade novel, but the narrator is adorable, so I didn’t care very much about the book being long. I really liked this one.

Then I read Mongrels by Stephen Graham Jones. It's about werewolves, so . . . cool? I guess? Everything about this book confused me. I don’t know. I’m still trying to sort out what the heck I just read.

Right now, I’m reading The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee. Guys, I think this might be my new favorite book of 2018? I’m not sure yet. It’s funny and rompy (that’s totally a word, no matter what Microsoft Word claims) and exactly what I need right now.

(Oh, I reminded myself of a random tangent: I was reading Gentleman’s Guide at 2 in the morning because my neighbors were being drunk and loud. While I was reading, the neighbors got into an argument about if bisexuals are real, or if they're just a figment of brainwashed liberals’ imaginations. (What?) I was tempted to pop the screen out of my window and hurl Gentlemen’s Guide at the neighbors’ heads. It’s a big, heavy book with a bisexual narrator. It would answer the neighbors' questions and knock them unconscious. Then I could get some sleep. That seemed like a win-win situation to me.)

In My Internet Stalking Life

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week (4th of July holiday edition):

  1. I had a fairly excellent 4th of July. There were hot dogs, and fried chicken, and chocolate pie.
  2. My dog didn’t lose her mind too much about the fireworks.
  3. I didn’t lose my mind too much about the incessant political conversations.
  4. Twitter was hilarious. Did you see the #SecondCivilWarLetters hashtag? The BBC has context and a few of the funniest tweets.
  5. What if Twitter had existed in 1776? There’s a hashtag for that: #1776Twitter

  1. Great covers. I do need to limit the amount of plastic in my life. I'll have to head on over to the blog for recommendations. Thanks for the tips. #8Sunday

  2. Oh man your neighbors sounds like gems. I really need to read A Gentleman's Guide. Glad to hear you are liking it. Have a great week!!

  3. I have always tried to be conscientious about waste. I bring my lunch to work in a reusable container, packed in a my reusable lunch bag. I always have a spoon, fork, and knife in my lunch bag too, so I don't have to use any plastic utensils. Little things count. I had some tasty hot dogs on Wednesday too, but the fireworks made it difficult for me to fall asleep and I was quite cranky at work on Thursday. I guess it's good I don't really interact with too many people there. I am a Jason Reynolds fan. He has yet to disappoint me with any of his books.

  4. Looks like you got some good reading done this week. Hope next week is a great one too. Our poor dogs were stressed so bad with the neighbors fireworks. It was awful. Hope you have a fabulous week.

  5. Haha I've heard good things about Gentlemen's guide! I don't do Twitter much so thanks for linking to the second civil war tweets because they are HILARIOUS

  6. It can be eye opening when you overhear other people's conversations. I don't get a lot of people. Sounds like you had some good food for the holiday and I am glad that the fireworks didn't stress out your dog too much. Have a great week!

  7. Straws are making me crazy...straws begone! You had a very full and delicious week!

  8. I love the idea of silencing your neighbours' asinine argument with a hurled book:)). Though maybe try throwing a book you aren't enjoying so much... Thank you for the recommendation - I've added it to my wishlist. In the meantime, I hope the coming week is a good one, AJ:)

  10. Happy to hear you had a good 4th and the dog wasn't too crazy :) I haven't really thought about reading Gentleman's Guide before, but with the sequel coming out I'm seeing a lot of chatter about them both. Maybe I'll need to rethink that :) Hope you have a great week!

  11. Gentleman's Guide is such a fun book, what a crazy conversation to overhear!

  12. I have been wanting to read the Gentleman Guide foe a while now.. I should maybe get to it lol

  13. OMG! I saw the #secondcivilwar tweets and I'm not gonna lie, some of them had me falling over in laughter. I'm jealous of your 4th a bit. Fried chicken and chocolate pie?? YUM! Have a great week! :)

  15. Twitter in 1776 now that is funny! Looks like some great books this week. My dogs freaked out and we were at home and we were not setting off fireworks...But, all around us they were. Glad you had a good fourth! Have a wonderful week!

  16. I agree that throwing Gentleman's Guide at their heads would have been a good way to solve that problem had it not been illegal. This bisexual approves, lmao. Have a good week! :)

  17. I feel like throwing a Gentleman's Guide at their heads would have been the perfect solution. It was a win-win for both. Thank you so much for posting Spread The Love!

I hope you have a wonderful week!

  18. Glad you had an awesome 4th! I didn't do anything but stayed home. Hubby was at work and my mom went on a short trip so I just stayed home reading. It was too hot to get out of the house, anyway!

  19. I think your book assault plan was a good one but I'm concerned that the book might get injured on their thick heads!

  20. #1776twitter sounds awesome, clearly I need to check that out. And glad you had a good 4th! In spite of, um, your neighbors. Wow what a conversation. America's a funny place these days lol. We have 'em here too.

Mongrels is one I've seen a few reviews on. I kinda like werewolves (sometimes?) but I just don't know...

  21. I loved the way you recommended other people's blog posts! That was so sweet and also useful :')

  22. I just avoid FB, and get much fewer political discussions.

I've heard mixed reviews about Mongrels.

  23. I'm glad to hear your dog did well with the fireworks. I actually kind of liked that the holiday fell in the middle of the week. Last year people were throwing off fireworks until 1am in our neighborhood. This year they only threw them off as the community's fireworks display was going off.

  24. Ohh . . . political conversations . . . I usually sneak out of the room when those happen. Or crawl under a table.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Wow, 400 pages does seem awfully long for a middle grade novel. Glad it was still enjoyable. Oh please, please knock out the bickering neighbors with A Gentleman’s Guide! I would love to see than random news story pop up in my feed. “Couple Doubting Bisexuals Knocked Out By Fictional Bisexual Character.” Oh the irony. LOL

  26. As Brave As You sounds good. Not a big fan of werewolf stories. I'm all for taking the politics out of the holidays...and just about everything else these days. Nobody is civil anymore.

Hope you have a great week.

  28. I started A Gentleman's Guide... but abandoned it. I think it was too slow-paced for what I needed at the time. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  31. As Brave as You is on my wishlist. I'm on the road this week so I might be slow in approving comments. I hope you stop by to see my weekly updates.

  32. Yay, I'm so excited that you're enjoying The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue. It really surprised me how much I truly adored that book and I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy since that's Felicity's story.

  33. Mongrel's cover certainly is striking and you have m so curious about it now -- will be looking out for your review.

  34. I have Brave Like Me but haven't started it--I think the length is what's holding me back, and you can bet my students will be even more reluctant to dive into a tome like that. Your neighbors--ugh. I just read Gentleman's Guide last month, and it is so fun!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Wow, I can't believe the timing of the argument your neighbours were having :D (talk about the argument itself...) I still haven't read that book though! I hope you are having a happy week :) and I'm totally checking out #1776Twitter :D

  36. Nooooooo I'm so sad you didn't like Mongrels! Was it something in particular that confused you, or just like overall it didn't click?

Your solution to the neighbor problem sounded fantastic. Would've been A+ for creativity and resourcefulness ;-)

Oh gosh, I'm gonna have to check out these Twitter hashtags, haha.

  37. I like your 'take a break from complaining' card. :-) Sorry you had to cope with unpleasant neighbor idiocy. The Twitter Second Civil War link was humorous to read. Thanks.
I plan to check you book haul. Happy Reading!

  38. Thanks for mentioning my post on middle grade reading recommendations! ♥️ I love middle grade books! I have had many ask for suggestions, their kids are bored, or they want them to become readers. Your wanting to ‘throw’ the book at your neighbors was hilarious!
