Top Ten Tuesday: Harry Potter Presidents

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week's topic is about fictional characters who'd make great leaders. November 8 marks one year since Donald Trump was elected president, so in honor of that, we're going to vote on which Harry Potter character should get Trump's job after he's impeached.*

*I'm fully aware that this is not how the US government works. Just shut up. It's fun, okay?

Potter Presidential Candidates

1. Harry Potter. The boy who lived. He inspired an army of wizards to take up their wands and fight with him. As a teenager, he defeated the most evil wizard to ever walk the planet. And he did it all without Tweeting.

2. Hermione Granger. Let’s be real: Harry wouldn’t have defeated Voldemort without Hermione. Harry probably wouldn’t even have passed his classes without Hermione. She’s the real hero of the series. Hermione came up with most of the plans, talked Harry out of making stupid decisions, and did all the required reading.

3. Minerva McGonagall. She’s fair-minded and doesn’t give her own students preferential treatment. (Unlike Snape with his Slytherins.) She’s also a highly-educated badass who doesn’t take crap from anyone. She stood up to the corrupt government when the kids at her school were in danger.

4. Albus Dumbledore. Sure, he has a few skeletons in his closet, but he’s one of the most successful wizards of all time. He’s a respected leader of the wizarding community. Even Voldemort is afraid of Dumbledore’s magic skills.

5. Remus Lupin. He has faced discrimination, and he knows what it’s like to live at the fringes of wizard society. Most of the students at Hogwarts loved having him as a teacher. With his insider knowledge of magical creatures, he might be able to bring different groups together to negotiate peace.

6. Neville Longbottom. He pulled a magic sword out of a hat and destroyed the last Horcrux. How badass is that? Neville has overcome a lot in his life. His parents were taken from him. His grandmother was overbearing. He was bullied relentlessly by his teachers and classmates. Still, he got through all of it and fought beside Harry at the major battles.

7. Luna Lovegood. She thinks outside the box and isn’t afraid to be different. Luna didn’t have an obvious reason to join the fight against Voldemort. Her family was never overly involved with the Order of the Phoenix. She could have chosen to stay out of the fight. But, she knew that joining Harry was the right thing to do, so she did it. She survived being held hostage by the Death Eaters. Also, State of the Union addresses would be a lot more interesting if Luna delivered them.

8. Molly Weasley. Don’t let her motherly appearance fool you. Molly is a founding member of the Order of the Phoenix and killed one of Voldemort’s most dangerous followers. Also, she raised 7 kids. Seven rambunctious kids who often got themselves into deadly trouble. If she can defeat dark wizards while raising seven kids, ruling a country should be easy.

9. Dobby the house elf. He defied his abusive masters to help a boy he didn’t even know. Once he did get to know Harry, he was always loyal. Dobby isn’t your typical house elf. His ideas are revolutionary in the elf world.

10. George Weasley. He grew up in a poor family, but that didn’t stop him from becoming an inventor and business owner at a young age. He’s not afraid to take risks. He risked his life many times to help defeat Voldemort.

  3. Ah this was great!! I am all in for Professor McGonagall!

  6. Hermione and Minerva seem awesome to me even though I've only read the first book. Dobby looks fun, and lots of people seem to love Luna so she must be fun as well!

  7. 6 and 7 both seem like porn stars.

I vote for the SNL / Lindsay Lohan version of Hermione.

  8. I love this! My vote would definitely go to McGonagall for president. It would just be an enlargement of her being Hogwarts' headmaster. Pretty big enlargement, but still! :)

  9. I'm going to say Neville because I love him. I have no idea if he'd want the job or be good at it, but he proved his worth time and time again!

  10. President Granger!

And most of the characters would be great in her cabinet, but I want to see Luna as press secretary.

Have a great day. - Katie

  11. I would wholeheartedly vote for any one of these characters! I'm tied on pretty much all of them--Minerva, Hermione, Neville, Molly, George... can we just have them all of members of the government? I'm so down! Great list, I love this idea!

  12. I love it! What a great list of potential presidential figures. Any of these would do better than what we have. You gave me a good laugh today. Thanks!

  13. I vote for Hermoine. Her and Luna would be an awesome ticket!

  15. McGonagall FTW! But with Hermione as her veep, so she gets some quality mentorship time in

    ReplyDelete
  16. McGonagall for sure :) Neville would be my second choice. Maybe he can be her VP!!

  17. Hermione and McGonagall! Harry, not so much. But I do love him! :)

  18. #3 all the way with #2 as her second!!!

  19. I think I'd vote for McGonagall to replace He Who Must Not Be Named. She's incredibly fair and doesn't put her own interests first. She strong in a subdue kind of way that make me believe that she could handle a stressful situation without being impulsive.

  20. Oooh, I'd be torn between McGonagall and Hermione. Depends on their age at the time of the election, I guess. If they aged up until now, then Hermione, but during when the books are set, Minerva.

I am actually feeling sad contrasting what it would be like to have Hermione leading the country instead of the garbage fire we've got going on right now.

  21. What. A. Great. Idea. Any of these characters would make awesome presidents. And they would certainly be an improvement. Start campaigning asap and I might even consider visiting the US again :)

  22. I vote for McGonagall!

This is a really fun idea for the TTT subject. I dig it!

  23. I'm voting for Molly Weasley! She is my animal/wizard spirit.

  24. I would vote for adult Hermione. Can I do that? Since it's a fictitious election, I don't see why I can't!

  25. Good choices! I love Molly Weasley for many reasons, but I think I'd vote for Hermione. McGonagall is a bad-ass and will make a great Headmaster, but I think Hermione would make the best president... or Minister of Magic. She's smart, quick-witted, courageous, passionately dedicated to justice and rights for all, and she's more flexible in her thinking than McGonagall. As for Molly, while she's awesome, her family is at the very center of her life, and I don't see her being happy in a wider leadership role. That's not a criticism; of all of them, I'm probably most like Molly, so I understand where she's coming from. She'll do anything and everything to protect and nurture the people she loves, but she doesn't seek power even for altruistic reasons.

  26. Neville gets my vote - I still can't see him as a teacher (he should have been the auror!) but he proved how great a leader he was in Deathly Hallows. Great list idea :)

  27. Amazing! I'd vote for Hermione, that's for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Love this!! Such a fun post. I feel like if Dobby won, we'd live in a world made entirely of odd socks, but he's adorable so I'm cool with that!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I love your take on this prompt - I'd vote McGonagall or Dobby!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hermione is the smartest but trying to force the elves to be free is like dictatorship! I'd vote Minerva!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think I'd have to go with either Hermione or McGonagall. Hermione might bring a set of new ideas and challenge the status quo, but McGonagall has years of experience disciplining students and teaching young people how to be adults, which I think would come in handy! Excellent idea. I'm now going to go away and dream that this was how the US system worked and I was going to wake up tomorrow to one of these presidents!

  32. So many great choices here but I think I'd vote for Minerva McGonagall. She just rocks on every level when it comes to being a great leader.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Haha, I love this topic! And I would definitely vote for McGonagall, she's SO badass :)

I'd even give my vote to The Sorting Hat if that means Trump would be gone :D

  34. I vote for Minerva McGonagall!! She's sweet and strict at the same time and I think she has all the right things to be a good president!
    Great post! :)

  35. So, I have never *technically* read or seen HP except for when I sort of read Book 1, but I still want Hermione for President. Seems smart and capable, would kill in a pantsuit, definitely won the popular vote.... Erm, sorry, trying to rewrite history maybe.

  36. I love this set up! So great. I'm totally going for McGonagall. I'm sorry Hermoine, I think you would be a great next president AFTER McGonagall. You just need a bit more experience under your belt.

  37. YES TO THIS POST. I absolutely adore your twist on the prompt. :) This is such a hard decision, but I'd definitely vote for Hermione. McGonagall would be a close second though - maybe as the Secretary of Education. ;) Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous choice! <3

  38. I'm totally Team Luna. She's a lot more fun than the rest of them, and more observant than they give her spirit for! :)

  39. Your take on TTT ROCKS!!! I think I'd vote McGonagll, but can we get Luna some public speaking opportunities? Maybe press secretary? Let's get that girl in front of a crowd!

  40. Ohhh I love this. I'm not sure who I'd want as president - I think they'd all do a good job. Even Hedwig would do a better job than Trump though lmao
