In My Reading Life

I actually finished some books! I seem to be very good at starting books and then abandoning them. I finished these two, and they were very good.

I read How The Word Is Passed: A Reckoning With The History Of Slavery Across America by Clint Smith. It's a nonfiction book about African American history. The author visits various historical sites in North America and Africa and reports on how the sites educate the public about the history of slavery. As expected, some sites do better than others.

I found this book fascinating because I love history and visiting historical sites. I also work at a park and sometimes educate the public about park history. The book made me think about which parts of history are considered "important," and which parts are glossed over.

I need to find more books like this one. It's approachable, quick to read, and looks at how history still impacts the modern day. It should be required reading for every history lover.

Then I read One Of Us Is Lying by Karen McManus. It's a young adult murder mystery. Five high schoolers walk into detention. Only four come out. It has everything you'd want in a murder mystery: secrets, twists, complicated characters, and red herrings.

I couldn't put this book down. The ending isn't super shocking, but that didn't bother me because I loved the characters and wanted to know how they all became inv0lved in a murder. The characters change so much over the course of the novel. It's a traditional coming-of-age story wrapped up in an epic high school scandal.

The story is slightly predictable and cliché, but it's so much fun. Read it if you like mysteries.

In The Rest Of My Life

What's been happening? Um . . . I'm tired. I survived Hell Week at work. The first week of July is always absolute chaos in parks. It's exhausting and a little bit scary for park rangers.

A park visitor drowned during Hell Week. The search for his body took 19 hours. Here's your reminder to wear a life jacket and check the weather before you go out on the water.

What else? I don't remember everything that has happened, so I'll just show you the random photos on my phone.

I went to Denver for a job interview. I thought it went well, but I suspect the job has ghosted me. I haven't heard from them in over a month. Riding the train to Denver was fun, though. Here's a photo of the Denver wildlife.

And here's some nature photos I took at work.

Oh, there was a tornado at work too. Nothing got destroyed because it didn't come all the way to the ground.

Brooklyn seems to be enjoying her summer vacation. She's doing very important things, such as rampaging through people's yards with the neighborhood kids and infesting my curtains.

How's Your Summer (Or Winter) Going?

Take care of yourselves and be kind to each other. See you around the blogosphere!

  1. Whoa! How is Brooklyn that grown!! I am glad to hear you survived the first week of July. Sorry to hear there was a death though. I find it so rude that you go for an interview and they just leave you hanging. Seriously, in the day and age of email, send one. I am proud of you for going and giving it your all. I like McManus' books. Never shocking but so readable and entertaining.

  2. Nice photos and the tornado! That is sad about the park visitor drowning.
Your books both sounds good. Shame on that job for ghosting you!

  3. Oof, sucks about the potential job ghosting you; good luck with the search!

Hurrah for finishing some books though -- sometimes it can be hard to find the focus.

  4. I ‘m sorry about the job ghosting you - I hope you enjoyed your visit to Denver nonetheless. We have had an increase in drownings this year - so many don’t bother wearing a life jacket. Have a great week ahead.

  5. Sorry things are crazy at your job! Some beautiful photos though. I hate when jobs ghost you. I mean how hard is it to just send a letter to let someone know they've gone a different direction? One of Us is Lying was really good, and I think there was a tv show made from it? Hope you have a good week!

  7. Oh my. A tornado and a drowning and everything that goes with July 4th. I'll say you've had some craziness at work. I loved How The Word Is Passed: A Reckoning With The History Of Slavery Across America. I wish I'd read it when I first heard about it. Clint Smith's poetry is fantastic, too.

  8. Oh, that's awful and stressful about the person drowning (and the job as well). Yay for surviving the week and reading good books. I hope this next week is better for you. Have a great week!

  10. I hope there is far less chaos ahead for you. My daughter loved the One of Us series - did you know it was adapted for a tv series?
Thanks for sharing your week, happy reading!

  11. Your time at work is never dull, I'll give you that! I cannot imagine having to deal with 4th of July tourists in a National Park. I don't think I've have the patience.

  12. I am so glad you survived hell week, although I am sorry to hear that someone drowned. I am sure that week is so insane with the 4th. Yikes. And that snake is another yikes!!!

  13. That snake is beautiful! I'm guessing if you're close enough for that picture, it wouldn't kill me. So sorry someone drowned :( Sad regardless of their choice not to wear a life jacket :(
