In My Reading Life

Last week, I read The Cold Vanish: Seeking The Missing In North America's Wilderness by Jon Billman. It's nonfiction about what happens when people disappear in nature. I have mixed feelings about this one. I love the book because I'm fascinated by the topic of missing people. The author interviews search and rescue experts and the families of missing people to uncover what really goes on when someone vanishes.

When a person goes missing, the person's family is left in an agonizing limbo. Is their family member alive? Dead? Kidnapped? Injured and suffering? Lost and surviving? Did the missing person choose to disappear and start a new life elsewhere? These questions become all-consuming for family members. It's easy to see how they could become desperate enough to consult psychics and bigfoot hunters. The author does a great job of showing the toll that a missing person case takes on a family.

I wasn't thrilled with the structure of the book. The author bounces between a few different missing-person stories. It makes the book feel rambling and disjointed.

Also, when I Googled the book, I discovered that the family of Jacob Gray—one of the missing people whose story is told—object to how he's portrayed in the narrative. They don't think the author did enough research.

If you're interested in wilderness search and rescue, I recommend this one. However, I did get bored a few times because the story is unfocused.

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. It's Nonfiction November! For the rest of November, I'll hopefully have a new blog post every Sunday and Monday.
  2. I bought some books to read during Nonfiction November.
  3. I ate an excellent burrito.
  4. When I was coming home from work on Halloween night, I saw something huge and shiny walking down the side of the road. Turns out, it was a person in a knight costume riding a horse. They looked fully prepared for a jousting tournament. Later, I saw a ton of kids speeding around in a golf cart. Back in my day, we didn't have horses or golf carts. If we wanted to trick-or-treat at high speed, we wore rollerblades.
  5. Baby Brooklyn had fun trick-or-treating, even though it was freezing outside. She dressed as a black cat. She was a very chubby cat because she had to wear a winter coat under her costume. Once again, she cared more about petting dogs than getting candy. Someone should invent a holiday where you go door-to-door and meet all the neighborhood dogs.

Halloween Is Over! I Went To Walgreens And Discovered That It's Christmas Now. Merry Christmas!

Take care of yourselves and be kind to each other. See you around the blogosphere!

  1. I love the meme at the beginning of the post, lol. I also think I need to read your post about Book Nerds in books. Sounds like a fun Halloween with the knight and also I love the idea of a holiday or event to just go pet people's dogs. I would love that too! Hope you have a good week!

  2. I think I would be petting the dogs with Brooklyn. Some people go really hard on Halloween. I only aspired for one of those wonky plastic costumes but my parents always made us make our costumes.

  3. I’ve enjoyed experiencing Halloween vicariously via TikToks and Reels, some people just go all out! We had one house decorated in our town, and I’m told it’s because the wife is American and insists on it.
With regards to The Cold Vanish, someone associated with Jacob Grey sent me a message after my review in 2020 stating the same

Wishing you a happy reading week.

  4. I totally support the dog-petting holiday! I gave out candy in my pathetic costume (Tottenham Hotspur--premier league team--super fan).

  5. I would love a holiday going door to door and petting dogs!

  6. Lol... I love the thought of people going from door to door to pet the dogs living there. Though next door's dog would rather bite than be petted, so perhaps some should be avoided. But it sounds as if Baby Brooklyn has her priorities right. And the idea of a knight on horseback trick or treating sounds wild:). Have a great week, AJ

  7. The book does sound interesting, but that stinks that the family of Jacob wasn't happy with how he was portrayed. Seeing a knight on the side of the road would be very weird, even for Halloween, LOL! Have a good week.

  8. I've read the Cold Vanish and my review says "rambling and disorganized." lol I like this kind of story though. We try to meet the neighborhood dogs every day!

  9. I'm glad Brooklyn had a good time petting dogs. I would support a new holiday in which we go door-to-door and pet dogs.

I wonder what books you will be reading this November.

  10. i second your idea for a new holiday where we get to go door to door to pet dogs. i feel like their would be a lot of people on board with that...oh how spoiled the dogs would be.

  11. Too bad the book isn't a smoother read. That is a subject I would like to read about. I agree with everyone, the dog day holiday sounds fabulous. My dog couldn't participate. He is scared of people and shows his fear by trying to bite.

  12. A knight on a horse, kids on a golf cart. Crazy fun. I love Halloween.

  13. The Cold Vanish does sound very intriguing, but also a little spooky. I'll be on the lookout for it.

  14. I was saying the same thing, Aj: it's suddenly Christmas. Heck, I love Christmas, but give me five seconds to switch gears. Love your idea for a new holiday. Hope you have a great week.
