In My Reading Life
I still haven't been reading. I've been working a crap ton of hours and falling asleep whenever I try to read.
I'm partway through a bunch of books, but the only one I've managed to finish was Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen. This is my favorite Jane Austen book (so far) because it's a bit silly.
The main character, Catherine, is uncomfortably relatable. If I lived in the early 1800s, I'd be Catherine. She's plain looking, loves horror books, is socially awkward, and gets carried away by her own imagination. I feel seen. Or called out.
Catherine gets to live every horror lover's dream: visiting an old—possibly spooky—estate. While she's there, she falls in love with Henry Tilney, whose family owns the estate. Can Catherine calm down enough to not ruin her new relationship?
I don't think I'll ever love romance books, but this one is enjoyable. It's upbeat and witty. I like that Catherine passionately defends novels and women's right to read them. Jane Austen was fighting against book banning way back in 1817. Let women read whatever they want!
The ending is too rushed for my tastes, but overall, I found this book charming. I had a good time with it.
In The Rest Of My Life
Five things that happened recently:
1. Here's an update on my quest to get every vaccine. I made an appointment at the pharmacy near my house because the sign out front said they had Tdap vaccines. When I got to my appointment, I learned that the vaccine cost $71. That's a lot of dollars. The pharmacist told me about a clinic that accepts Medicaid patients, so I went there instead. Vaccine achieved! It killed my arm. Even my neck and chest muscles hurt. Next, I have to locate a TB skin test that I can afford.
2. This conversation at work was amusing:
Me: *Walks past group of tourists.*
Man in group: "Hey, officer! That's not marijuana you're smelling. I just farted."
Me: "Marijuana is legal here."
Man: "Oh. It's marijuana you're smelling."
Me. "I know. Have a nice day."
3. Speaking of work, my hours are getting cut down in August. They're getting cut because I'm going to EMT school, but I'm still excited to not be at work all the time.
4. I eat so much pizza that I got a coupon for a free pizza. It was delicious.

I'm Still Hoping The Vaccines Give Me Superpowers
IF. vaccines gave superpowers I would definitely be able to leap tall buildings at a single bound, not to mention locomotives and being smarter than a speeding bullet. Oh, wait the last is super grover.

I like Northanger Abbey, too, and I'm re-reading it this summer because I want to revisit the humor and the earnestness of Catherine.
ReplyDeleteI need to read Northanger Abbey! I hate the smell of marijuana. I don't care that people use it, it's legal here, but it smells so bad. And our students come in to school just smelling of it so much, although it isn't legal for them I don't think at their age, and it's definitely not legal at school actually. lol My work starts back up next week, so my reading time will be going down sadly. ReplyDeleteThere must be a skunk network where they hype your house. You just cannot get rid of them. I can imagine it's exhausting being out all day in the sun and heat. Good luck with the vaccines. That's a lot to do at once. YEAH! for EMT school.

I loved Northanger Abbey. But I love all the Austen books. I hope you find a place to get a TB test soon. I wonder if you go to your doctor's office, if they will do it. That is where I always get mine done.
ReplyDeleteLet's commiserate over our lack of reading time. Why can't we all be independently wealthy? Tourist adventure sounds hilarious. You should talk with my daughter about vaccine adventures and tests. She enters nursing school this fall. Pizza is yummy! Enjoy your day! Love seeing what you're up to.

ReplyDeleteI wonder which TB test you'll be able to get! I think the Mantoux test is probably standard. Sadly, the TB vaccine isn't very effective, especially in adults. Trivia: the BCG vaccine actually gets less and less effective the closer you live to the equator. In Britain it's not terrible, but at the equator it virtually doesn't work at all. I don't think we really know why for sure, but there are theories that it's about the naturally occuring mycobacteria in the soil in those areas.

ReplyDeleteTetanus shots are the WORST! Good for you for pursuing all the vaccines. I am really excited for you to start EMT school and to have a break from work. I want a break from full time work :-)
