The Sunday Post #366

In My Reading Life

I read Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt, and it was adorable. I love that one of the characters is a hungry octopus that escapes from its tank and eats its fishy neighbors. RIP aquarium exhibits.

The human characters are equally compelling. The main character is Tova. She works the night shift at a public aquarium, and that's where she meets Marcellus, the escape-artist octopus. Tova and Marcellus form a bond because Tova's teenage son disappeared in Puget Sound. Marcellus knows what happened to him, but how can he tell her? How can an octopus communicate with a human?

For a book about death and loneliness, the tone is surprisingly light. Marcellus has some funny observations about the world. There are also a bunch of quirky human characters who are all searching for love or family. The book tackles heavy topics, but it never feels depressing. It'll (probably) leave you smiling.

The plot requires a lot of suspension of disbelief. There are convenient coincidences, and some chapters are told from the octopus's point-of-view. It's all a bit predictable and sappy. However, that didn't stop me from having a great time. I enjoyed getting to know the characters. Overall, it's a charming read. I recommend it if you like animal books. Or grief books. Or found family books.

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy recently:

  1. I did my taxes. I even did them on time. Nicely done, me. I got some money back. Thanks, government! I used it to buy work pants and sunscreen that (allegedly) won't give me acne. Oh, and I preordered Nicole's book. You should do that too.
  2. I got new glasses. I keep accidentally jump-scaring myself because I'm used to being blind. Now I can see too well.
  3. A man fell through my bedroom ceiling, but nobody died, so it's a funny story. A few weeks ago, roofers came to fix my house's busted roof. One of the roofers fell through the roof, through the ceiling, and into my bedroom. I came home from work to find a man-sized hole in the ceiling. Some of my expensive stuff got broken because he fell on the only shelf in the entire house that had valuable things on it. It's okay, though. The roofer is alive. The hole is fixed. The moral of the story: Don't get naked when you have roofers. They can come crashing in at any moment. I'm glad I was at work when it happened.
  4. Thank you to everybody who looked at my Beginner's Guide To Reviewing Books post. I spent pretty much all of March writing that thing. It might be the longest post I've ever written.
  5. Here are the animals that have shown up in my yard recently:

  1. Not the roofer falling through the ceiling. 😭 I would be so scared if I witnessed it, but I also want to witness it just for the stories that could be told! I was watching my neighbor's roof getting fixed last year, then some equipment fell on THEIR neighbor's roof and left a hole in it. 😭 Definitely a core memory for me as an observer lol.

  2. Great story about the roofer, OMG I'm pretty sure I wouldn't go in my bedroom if I knew someone was working above it. I absolutely adored Remarkably Bright Creatures too, so heartwarming. Have a good week!

  3. I don't care about convenient coincidences -- I LOVED IT! I am sappy and I just ate up the way those lives intersected and made me happy cry. Holy moly! I never had a man fall through my roof. RIP your nice things though I am glad the guy is ok. I loved your review post. Always great information with lots of spot on humor.

  4. That’s a real adventure without leaving home: having a man fall through your roof. I wonder why the structure of the roof didn’t keep him on top of it. Good luck with no more unusual adventures.

  5. OMG I burts out laughing when I read your roof incident! Indeed, don't get naked when people come work on your roof LOL

  6. Oh my gosh on that roofer story. That's insane! So glad you weren't in there! That could totally be the basis for a romance story though. lol. Or part of one. Way to go on the taxes.

That is so funny about the glasses. I've done that before too!

  7. Glad the roofer is okay, but sorry about the loss of some of your things. It's hard. I hope you have a great week!

  8. Wow we had our roof done this past year but no roofer falling through so glad for that. Glad that you can see way better with your glasses and that hopefully ya stop scaring yourself. Have a great week.

  9. Glad the roofer is okay, but that's a pretty wild story! I though Remarkably Bright Creatures was such a fun read. I can still hear the voice of Marcellus - such a perfect narration choice. It would be worth listening to an audio sample just to hear it. Perfection!

  10. Oh my! A roofer who came right through your ceiling! Wow. Glad he's alive.

So many people enjoyed Remarkably Bright Creatures. I'm glad you did, too.

  12. First off, thank you SO much for mentioning my book, AJ! I can't tell you how much I appreciate you helping me spread the word!

I've heard amazing things about Remarkably Bright Creatures, but I'm glad I read this because I still didn't have a good sense of what it's about. I own a signed copy (actually, also signed by the author's son because he was there and wanted to "help" with a couple of the signings - so cute!), but I haven't managed to read it yet! Oh, and that story about the roofer is crazy!!

  13. Oh gosh, I am so glad the roofer is okay, but that is shocking and scary. As you say, good thing you weren't home at the time.

I listened to Remarkably Bright Creatures and the voice for the octopus was so perfect.

  14. Oh my what a story about the roof guy falling through. Now I am sure an author could use that in a book!

  15. Glad no one was hurt and you can laugh about the roofer falling through your ceiling now. It would be scary if you were home for that.

  16. Very glad that no one was hurt when the roofer fell through your ceiling and while you're being remarkably pragmatic about having valuable items broken - isn't it just TYPICAL that he landed on your shelf?? Glad you got a rebate on your taxes:)). Have a great week, AJ.

  17. Oh my, I'm glad the roofer is ok, but that is kind of funny! I wonder how often that happens...

  18. I'm glad no one was hurt when the roofer fell through the ceiling. Yikes! I have an eye appointment this week and I'm probably going to need new glasses. We'll see. Hope you have a great week!

  19. Good grief! Falling through the ceiling is really amazing. You'd think rafters or something would have gotten in the way. It has been a couple of years worth of eye appointments since I needed new glasses. It is sometimes quite an adjustment. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  20. Oh my gosh!! That sounds like a movie. I am glad that the roofer was ok though. And I was just looking at Nicole's book this morning! I am planning on reading it for sure.

  21. Those wings are making me hungry. Poor roofer! I hope nothing like that happens when our renovations get going. I like the sound of Remarkably Bright Creatures and added it to my list. I hope you have a great week!

  22. Oh, my! I'm not sure how I would have handled a man crashing through my ceiling. Good thing you can laugh about it. I will have to check out your Beginner's Guide. It is so neat that you do that. Hope you have a wonderful week...without anyone else falling through the ceiling.

  23. Okay, now I want a camera in my backyard! I smell skunk smell a lot at night, but I'm always wondering if it's actually a skunk or if it's someone smoking pot. That's crazy about someone crashing through your roof! I do need to pre-order Nicole's book too. Probably after I get paid for summer school since I'm so broke right now! Have a great week!

  24. Happy no one was hurt when the roofer crashed through! What a shock! Have a great week, AJ!

  25. I'm happy that a man falling through your roof made you happy! 😂 No really, I'm glad that no one was hurt and the roof was fixed and you weren't naked when he fell into your bedroom. Definitely things worth being happy about! I read Remarkably Bright Creatures for my book club a couple of months ago, and I enjoyed it! I'm glad you did too!

  26. I'm still a bit in shock about the roofer falling through the ceiling. That had to be shocking for everyone involved! Remarkably Bright Creatures is on my TBR. I hope you're having a great week!
