In My Reading Life
I did it! I finished one of my stupidly huge history books. I started reading two chunky beasts on November 1, so I feel like I accomplished something by finishing one of them.
I read A People's History Of The United States by Howard Zinn. It's an upside-down look at US history. Instead of focusing on presidents and business leaders, it tells the story of working-class people. I have mixed feelings about it. If you're interested in US history, then it's a must-read because it focuses on events and topics that other history books overlook. I'm glad I read it. I learned a lot, but the writing style is bland and boring! This book is a complete slog. It took me a month to read because I'd fall asleep after 10 pages.
I pushed through because the information is interesting. The book highlights how the US government almost always sides with money and businesses over humans. If working-class people want something (such as child labor laws or leaving the doors of a factory unlocked so workers don't die in fires), then the working-class people have to do more than vote. Historically, US politicians don't care about people until those people disrupt the money and businesses. Then the politicians will notice and (occasionally) fix the problems.
I found the end of the book way more readable than the beginning. Once it started talking about events that happened during my lifetime, it became easier to stay engaged in the story. I guess this just proves that I'm selfish and think of myself as the main character of the universe. Nothing interesting happened before me!
Speaking of nothing interesting, the other book I'm slogging through is The Life Of Elizabeth I by Alison Weir. It's exactly what it says on the cover. It's a biography of Queen Elizabeth I, who ruled England in the late 1500s. I have less than 100 pages left to read. I can make it!
I'm also finding the end of this book more engaging than the beginning. Elizabeth is old at the end, so her advisors have given up on forcing her into a marriage and are just letting her rule the country. Reading 300+ pages of men shoving other men at the queen is tedious. I'm probably the only person on earth who saw the word "menopause" and went, "OMG, FINALLY! This is your moment, Elizabeth! Live your best life!"
In The Rest Of My Life
Five things that made me happy last week:
- If you celebrated Thanksgiving, I hope it was awesome. My parents spent all morning cooking tons of different foods. Baby Brooklyn ate one slice of turkey and massive quantities of cheese. No other foods. Good times.
- The finale of The Great British Bake Off. My favorite contestant actually won. That hardly ever happens.
- The prairie dogs have gone fluffy! I love when they grow their winter fur and get cute and chubby. I'd want to cuddle them if they weren't full of rabies and bubonic plague fleas.
- Walking around my neighborhood and looking at decorations. The houses have a mixture of Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and generic fall/winter stuff. It's like nobody knows what holiday it is, so we're celebrating all of them.
- I had a boxing lesson on Thanksgiving morning, and my trainer put Christmas music on the gym speakers. I don't think the other gym patrons were as excited as I was.
Are We Still Doing The Social Media Thing, Or . . .
Take care of yourselves and be kind to each other. See you around the blogosphere!
I find it amazing that there are writers who can make interesting stuff boring. Is that a skill? Boxing to Christmas music. It's like preparation for shopping on Dec 26th.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to read the Howard Zinn book. It came out a long time ago (the 70s, maybe?) and it was controversial then. I want to say that Zinn calls (called?) himself a Marxist/Socialist, but I might have everything wrong. I have always wanted to see things from the point of view of the common people. I think we can see that having the rich in charge doesn't really work that well here in America.
ReplyDeleteWe have two episodes to go before we get to the finale of the Great British Baking Show. I know who I think is going to win...and who I'd like to win...
Congrats on reading non fiction and historical fiction, two genres i've stayed away from this year. But must get back to some of those soon.
ReplyDeleteGood on you for finishing the doorstopper of a book! I would have given up ages ago. History + dry and slow are NOT for me. :) I chuckled at your neighborhood decorations indecisiveness. :) Most of my neighborhood is fully Christmas already. We had a sunny weekend just before Thanksgiving and people were out all over the neighborhood taking advantage of the good weather to put up outside decor. Including us. Which is good because it's cold and rainy this weekend! Have a terrific week.

What an achievement to get through those books!
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a good Thanksgiving. We don't have it here in the UK but I learnt a lot about it this week!
Have a good weekend.

My favorite contestant also won British Bake Off! I actually liked all this season's bakers, but the winner was my fave (don't want to create any spoilers).
ReplyDelete"I guess this just proves that I'm selfish and think of myself as the main character of the universe. Nothing interesting happened before me!" -- Hahahahahahahaha!
ReplyDelete"I'm probably the only person on earth who saw the word "menopause" and went, "OMG, FINALLY! This is your moment, Elizabeth! Live your best life!" -- Bwaaa haaa haaa!!!
OMG my sides hurt from laughing so hard. And your comments actually make me want to read these two "chunky beasts".
This made me spit out my coffee: "I'd want to cuddle them if they weren't full of rabies and bubonic plague fleas."
Baby Brooklyn is too cute eating all the cheese!
Congrats to your favorite contestant winning for once!
Bah humbug to anyone who doesn’t appreciate Christmas music at this time of the year! Have a great week ahead.
ReplyDeleteWe have a radio station here that starts playing Christmas music before Thanksgiving. I have been tuning in. :)
ReplyDeleteMenopause saves! lol I guess it's not really funny though, good grief. And Christmas music! I'm listening now. Brooklyn seems smart. I ate a ton of cheese on Thanksgiving too. Cheese cubes for the win. More appetizers than actual turkey...
ReplyDelete"bubonic plague" lol
Congrats on finishing the big book. I would have given up...actually, I wouldn't even have tried. I never read big books :) I always enjoy looking at decorations this time of year. Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteWe have started listening to Christmas music here. LOL.
ReplyDeleteWyatt also ate a ton of cheese on Thanksgiving. And that is about it.
I was excited about the winner too!
Someone who seems to make history interesting is Heather Cox Richardson. I see her daily facebook posts and subscribed to her newsletter. Now I want to read her books. We watch cooking shows and could go back to watching the British Bake off one.

Congrats on making it through the history books! They are tedious. I don't read any of that unless I have to and I haven't had to in a long time! It would be nice if you could get a writer to make it interesting.
ReplyDeleteThe prairie dogs sound cute, except for the rabies and fleas that is. Lol! I do feel like there is a combo of Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas out there! People just need to pick a holiday haha!
I'm ready for Christmas music too! We used to have prairie dogs in our yard, but our dogs have chased them away so now they live in a neighbors yard.
ReplyDeleteBaby Brooklyn's Thanksgiving dinner sounds identical to my son's. Of course, my son is 12 and still all he ate was a turkey leg and cheese. Go figure! - Melinda @ A Web of Stories
ReplyDeleteI need to hold on the Christmas tunes for a bit longer. I've seen all sorts of decorations -- Halloween is still going ! congrats on conquering Zinn. an achievement.
ReplyDeleteThanks for not spoiling TGBBO, I haven’t watched the last three episodes yet.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on making it through the aforementioned chunkster.
Wishing you a great reading week
You make me curious about the British Bake Off. I don't think I've ever seen it. Yay for finishing your big, sometimes boring, book. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteHaha, Baby Brooklyn! Henry ate a couple bites of turkey and loved the mashed potatoes!
ReplyDeleteHow awesome that you finished your history book! I'm definitely impressed.
ReplyDeleteI would have been excited about that Christmas music too. :D
Have a great week and happy reading.
Boxing on Christmas songs? LOL Also could you post a picture of a fluffy prairie dog next week?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think I'd want to snuggle fluffy prairie dogs as well. Lol. Bad idea, Stephanie!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on finishing up Howard Zinn's book! Where I live some houses started to get ready for christmas (my family doesn't celebrate it) and I love decorations. I wish there would be more occasions to decorate houses aside from autumn and winter.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on finishing those two tomes. That’s an accomplishment. I’m with Brooklyn – turkey and cheese sounds perfectly acceptable. Boxing to Christmas music… good times.
ReplyDeleteBoxing to Christmas music sounds beyond amazing. That's really too bad about the Zinn book. It sounds like a fascinating way to look at history so too bad the execution was on the meh side but congratulations for finishing it! My son ate one (tiny) piece of turkey and then switched to mashed potatoes so it sounds like Brooklyn's Thanksgiving eating is about on point! I hope you are having a wonderful week.
ReplyDeleteToo bad A People's History is a slog. I am really interested in history, but not enough to read a "boring" book. Boring books just put me in a book slump...until I finally finish them months later, or just give up.
ReplyDeleteI have always thought that Boxing sounded like fun. Maybe I just want to hit something sometimes. I hate to admit that I am not a fan of most Christmas music but I think that you should do what makes you happy. It sounds like Baby Brooklyn was being a very normal kiddo this Thanksgiving!
