  • On Tuesday, I wonder why books spend so long sitting on my TBR shelf.

In My Reading Life

Last week, I reconfirmed my belief that most series don't need to be series. I read You Love Me, which is the third book in the You series by Caroline Kepnes. The series follows Joe, a stalker and serial killer. In each book, he becomes obsessed with a different woman and kills everyone in her life until she catches on (or doesn't). In You Love Me, Joe moves to an island in the Pacific Northwest and starts volunteering at a library. There, he meets Mary Kay, who becomes his newest target. It sucks to be Mary Kay.

The first book in this series is brilliant. It's creepy and tense. I couldn't stop listening to the audiobook because it's like a nightmare. I wanted to know what Joe would do next and if his target would figure out that he's a murderer. I highly recommend the first book if you enjoy being terrified. The second two books were pretty "meh" for me. Maybe the novelty wore off? The plots are becoming far-fetched, and the murders are getting repetitive. I guess even serial killing gets boring if you do it too many times.

You Love Me is entertaining enough that I never wanted to give up on it, but I don't think it'll stick with me like the first book did. I know there's a fourth book coming out eventually. I'm undecided if I want to read it. I think You could have been a perfectly awesome standalone. Why did we need sequels?

Reading all 3 You books so quickly put me in a reading slump. I'm currently having a hard time staying interested in anything, so I'm partway through two books. One of them is Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead. It's a thick historical fiction brick about a female pilot during Prohibition. So far, it's not holding my attention at all. The other book is Orange World And Other Stories by Karen Russell. It's a collection of fantasy stories. I'm having much better luck with Orange World.

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. It was National Burrito Day. Of course, I celebrated with a burrito.
  2. Also, caramel popcorn. It wasn't caramel corn day, but I pretended it was.
  3. Deep cleaning my rooms. I hate cleaning, but I'm much happier without all the dust.
  4. Week 3 of Spanish lessons went well. The lessons feel more like a review than learning. I guess I still have a lot of my childhood Spanish buried in my brain meat.
  5. I had a lot of fun writing my post about the worst thing I've done to a book. I'll love you forever if you read it.

  1. I love your dry humor in your posts! Makes them so easy to read. I don't like serial killer books, though I have read some mysteries and suspense that have them in it. I guess I decide title by title before reading. I wouldn't read your You series but glad you got some satisfaction from it. Have a good week. Darn, I missed National Burrito day (and I love Mexican food!)

  2. I had no idea a national burrito day existed!!! LOL And I'll go read your post because I am curious to know what's the worst things you've done to a book! Have a great week AJ!

  3. Your post about the homework assignment had me in stitches. Thank you for sharing. It's a shame I missed burrito day. I need to make up for that. I am feeling guilty that you're deep cleaning and I am not (though I should). Gold star for you!

  4. I've had a JD Robb series recommended to me but there are 55 books in the series. Surely they must start getting very same-y?! I can only conclude there are readers out there who prefer reading books that feel "familiar" so like the same characters and situations repeated over and over. I'm more like you and want to move on to something new.

  5. I agree, she should have stopped at You but I imagine it was hard to turn down the opportunity to keep publishing.
Thanks for sharing your book incident, it made me laugh

Wishing you a great reading week

  6. Yay for the deep cleaning. I love when it's finished. Dusting is the worst because it needs to be done all over again in a short time.

  7. Ugh I missed burrito day!

I need to deep clean my room. I don't mind the cleaning but I hate moving stuff to get to the part of the floor I need to vacuum, etc.

  8. The worst thing you did to a book - hilarious story. Cleaning - blah.

  9. I did enjoy your post on Tuesday. Sorry you are in a reading slump, I hope you find a book that pulls you back out. Have a great week.

  10. Oh my gosh! That meme! I so relate to it. Adulting is hard. I'm sorry you're in a reading slump. I hope you can push through it. Good luck and I hope you have a good week.

  11. I kind of feel like every day is Caramel popcorn day so I think you're good there. I'm not a huge fan of cleaning either though it is slightly better if I have a good audio book but it is nice to have things really good and clean. I hope you have a wonderful week!

  12. "It sucks to be Mary Kay" Ha It does sound repetitive, though. Maybe Joe needs to meet a potential victim who's scarier than he is?

I had an awesome wet burrito last week.

  13. I love that you made up your own caramel corn day! What fun!

  14. I also took Spanish as an adult and much of it seemed familiar as well just from growing up in southern California. Good for you for sticking to the language lessons.

  15. Okay, I read about your And Then There Were None caper and I loved it. I mean, I hate that Agatha Christie is ruined for you, but the story was awesome. And I'm glad you earned an A out of the class, even if you "didn't deserve it."

I'm doing Spanish right now...on Duolingo. It's more of a diversion than anything for me. I took 1 quarter of Spanish for fun when I was taking prerequisites for maybe getting a masters in Teaching (which I did not do...). I was, however, pregnant with my first at the time and remember nothing. - Melinda @ A Web of Stories

  16. I wonder if you would have enjoyed the "YOU" series more if you spaced them out? I know I feel an author gets repetitive if I read too many of their books too closely together. But that may just be me. Also, the premise seems like something novel for one book, and after that it would be very repetitive.

  17. I just can't make myself read something I'm not enjoying. Not only is it painful, but it causes me to like reading a little less. And I agree with you...not everything has to be a series.

I'm looking forward to reading your upcoming post. It definitely sounds fun.

  18. Nice post about And Then There Were None. I'm sorry it ruined Agatha Christie for you though. I'm not sure I could read three books about the same serial killer - or even one. I'm awfully suggestible and don't want to have to worry that I've attracted a serial killer of my very own. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  19. Congrats on the deep cleaning. I must admit that I do more surface cleaning, but then again, this new apartment is easier to keep clean.

I have not been able to get into the "You" books or movies. I can't stand Joe, LOL.

Enjoy your week, and here are my WEEKLY UPDATES

  20. I didn't know it was National Burrito and now I want one. I want some caramel popcorn, too. Maybe I'm just hungry :)

Hope you have a great week!

  21. I'm finding reading slow going right now too. Trying to shake things up by reading a short story by Margaret Atwood. Good luck with yours.

  22. I am not sure I could read a series about a serial killer. One book is okay, but not wanting to experience his life over and again. Great Circle sounds interesting to me. Hope you can get back into it.

Thanks for visiting my blog yesterday.

  23. I love that meme. Yeah, adulthood isn’t much like I imagined it to be when I was six, either.

I’m studying Spanish, too. It’s so cool you knew (some of?) it when you were a kid. I picked up a few words and phrases from other kids who spoke it fluently, but that’s all I figured out as a kid. I study it every day and hope to become fluent in it in a couple of years.

And, yeah, most series should have stopped with the first book for sure. I tend to avoid series, although there are exceptions. :)

  24. Hmm. I haven't started Great Circle yet ... but I had high hopes for it. Is it not good?? Good job with the Spanish.
