The Sunday Post #221
On The Blog This Week
- On Tuesday I recommend some books for middle schoolers.
- On Wednesday I talk about the May releases I’m excited to read.
In My Reading Life
I finished The Outsider by Stephen King. The story centers
on a team of detectives who are trying to solve a murder that may have been
committed by a supernatural creature. I definitely didn’t hate the book, but I
ruined it for myself by watching the TV show first. I think I would have liked
it more if I didn’t already know the twists. Stephen King books tend to be very
slow, and I was impatient because I knew where it was going. Unpopular
opinion, but I liked the show more than the book. The TV people added more
action and drama. The beginning and ending of the book are excellent, but the
middle badly needed more action and drama.
Baby Brooklyn
made me read Knock, Knock! by Jackie Carter. This book is so out-of-print that good-quality images of its
cover don’t seem to exist on the internet. (But you can still buy it on Amazon.) You’ll just have to imagine what the
cover looks like because I can’t show you! It’s a picture book about a mother,
daughter, and dog who move into a new apartment. They’re surprised when someone
mysterious knocks on their door. Brooklyn and I both liked the book. It has
fast-paced, rhyming text and joyfully chaotic illustrations.
In The Rest Of My Life
Five things
that made me happy last week:
- I finished all the books I needed to read for OWLs Readathon. Since I’m (mostly) on a Twitter break, I missed the online fun with this readathon, but I finished it!
- Yesterday was Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon. Clearly, I’m loving readathons right now. They’re an excellent distraction from everything else.
- I finally saw IT: Chapter 2! Then I re-watched Chapter 1 because I realized I’d forgotten pretty much everything that happened. I can confirm that Chapter 1 is my favorite. The child characters are more entertaining than the adults.
- New books!
- Since my life has no rules anymore, I ran 1.5 miles in a rainstorm at 6 A.M. It was surprisingly peaceful. I somehow managed to run faster than I do when it isn’t raining or 6 A.M. Also, I saw a ton of bunnies. I guess their lives also have no rules.
Let’s Be Friends (From A Safe Distance)
Take care of yourselves and be kind to each
other! See you around the blogosphere!
I enjoyed reading The Outsider and the series also, but I do prefer to read the book first myself. Aww glad you enjoyed Knock, Knock! with the little one. I saw yesterday was Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon, I didn't actively participate online as I'm trying to avoid getting onto social media as much as I can right now but I did finish a book yesterday.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your week ahead and stay well.
I do run a lot more as well, now that handball practice has been canceled for the season.
ReplyDeleteI'm curious about the Stephen King book. They can be kinda slow, indeed. I did like the Mr. Mercedes series, it was actually a good paced book (all 3 of them). The TV-show is actually not that good in my opinion.
But I do feel ya with tv shows being better. I feel like that with the GOT books (not a popular opinion, lol)
What you said about liking the show more than the book is the same thing I've felt about the GOT books. They are so slow and the show was so exciting that I don't think I'll ever be able to read the books. Have a good week!
ReplyDeleteMy rule is that I never read a book if I have already seen the adaptation. I will watch something I read, but not the other way around. All the major stuff will be in the adaptation, so where's the surprise? Good for you getting out there running so early in the morning. I don't like to be wet or cold, but I admire your dedication.
ReplyDeleteNew books are always a good thing! I'm debating buying a few new ones...
ReplyDeleteOh I saw bunnies on the lawn of my cross-the-road neighbour when I was outside at dawn for ANZAC Day, it was surprising given we live in a suburban area of our small town.
ReplyDeleteWishing you a great reading week, be well xx
I've never tried running in a rainstorm, especially 1.5 miles. You are quite the adventurer, aren't you?
ReplyDeleteI have participated in every readathon, but this cough has slowed me down a bit, and I barely joined in yesterday. Oh well. I probably need my sleep.
Yes, yes, when someone comes up the sidewalk to my door, it feels very odd. A friend dropped off a book the other day, and she knocked on my door when she arrived. I literally couldn't remember what to do when someone knocks on your door. I actually just moved apart the door curtain and waved at her.
Bwahahaha you made me laugh with your running in the rainstorm and bunnies AJ! Now you know what to do to improve your athletic skills right?
ReplyDeleteRunning in a rainstorm huh? LOL Glad it was enjoyable! I couldn't run even if it was sunny, so good for you. I do keep meaning to do a read-a-thon, especially these days, but I tend to find out last minute and just don't have the focus to do it. Ahh well.

I love that meme at the top lol. That is exactly how I feel right now. Anyway, I agree that It Chapter 1 is better than Chapter 2. I really enjoyed the second and the casting was on point, but the first one was scarier.
ReplyDeleteRunning 1.5 miles in a rainstorm - oh my goodness! And what a shock to discover that rabbits don't observe social distancing... Glad you enjoyed the readathon - I've yet to take part in one, but yesterday I got caught up with other things.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like Baby Brooklyn had a treat with that book.
ReplyDeleteThe rest of your week sounds good, too, and we have to do whatever is necessary to get through the isolation...and stay safe.
Thanks for visiting my blog.
I tried Deweys for the first time. I sucked at any kind of online updates because I had a headache but I did read about 13 hours. I went to bed early because headache. I'm feeling great today so I hope I can do it again! I think we just have to do what works right now.
ReplyDeleteStay safe and be well!
Anne - Books of My Heart Here is my Sunday Post
I admire anyone who runs in the rain. I'm always afraid I'll slip when it's wet like that. Stay safe!
ReplyDeleteI tried watching The Outsider but I couldn't get too caught up in it. I'll have to go back to it or read the book. Hope you have a great week...take care and stay safe!
ReplyDeleteRunning in the rain at 6AM? I don't see that in my future but good for you! My kids are 25 and 19 and some of the books that they liked when they were little were read so many times that I still have them memorized. I have the Outsider on my shelf to read but I have heard that I should read the Mr. Mercedes books first. I will wait on watching the TV show! I hope you have a wonderful week!
ReplyDeleteI'm seriously impressed by the running at 6AM in a rainstorm. If it is raining then I take it as a sign I should not go outside and 6AM and I are not friends. I always get The Outsider confused with The Outsiders and those are too very different books. I hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI love Minions. :) And yes so true! The simplest things now are like- ooh what's THIS?
ReplyDeleteBunnies! Now that it's spring we've had several showing up in our yard. I don't know where they go in winter- I guess they hunker down or something?- but they're back lol. And running in the rain seems like it could be strangely peaceful? It's always so quiet early in the morning. One of the few things i like about morning... :)
Anyway have a great week.
The Minions icon is so cute :) I try not to watch the movie before reading the book adaption, because then I lost interest in the book then since I know what dialogue is coming. Movies are different since they're physically visual.
ReplyDeleteBeena @ Beena Khan
I love the idea of living a no rules life!
ReplyDeleteHere's to more of that this week.
I like the idea of running in the rain at 6 AM! You go, Girl!
ReplyDeletewww.thepulpitandthepen.com
Running in the rain sounds like it would be invigorating! If I was a runner I might try it. But I would have to try running first. Lol. And bunnies!!!!
ReplyDeleteJoyfully chaotic is what all kid's books thrive to be. Haha.
ReplyDeleteI hope you're all doing well AJ!
I enjoyed reading The Outsider but definitely found the creep factor high. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteI can't even imagine being awake at 6 AM let alone running then. I have been doing some gentle middle of the day walks while listening to audiobooks but since it might rain today I'll likely skip the walk today. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteI just cannot read the book after watching a show or movie. I liked both versions of The Outsider but liked the book more. Agree that the first It movie was better but loved both. Stay safe and happy reading!
ReplyDeleteNatflix&Books
Glad you keep exercising! Stay safe
ReplyDeleteI'm laughing at your productive 6 AM run in the rain. Who knew that rainstorms and early mornings are your best running conditions? :-)
ReplyDeleteNicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction
I don't do anything well at 6 AM, so you have me beat. Great job keeping up with the reading. Think my husband has read The Outsider. I'm not into King as much as I used to be.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great week. Thanks for visiting my blog.
I've never been able to convince my body that running is a good idea. And I'm missing all these organized readathons, but I think it's because my nose is buried in a book. LOL At least I amuse myself? ;) Stay safe and enjoy your week!
ReplyDeleteI've still to sit and watch the two parts of IT! I have so much stuff that I need to be getting on with watching! I'm getting through a few seasons of Great British Menu which I love. I have TONS of other things I need to watch too...
