The Sunday Post #172

Warning: This blog can penetrate foil hats.

The Sunday Post is hosted by The Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to recap the past week, talk about next week, and share news. It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? is hosted by Book Date. I get to tell you what I’ve read recently.

On The Blog Last Week

On The Blog This Week

  • On Tuesday I show you some Great American Reads that I haven’t read.
  • On Thursday we talk about bad decisions.
  • On Saturday I review Vengeful by V.E. Schwab. (Spoiler alert: I loved it.)

In My Reading Life

Nonfiction November is going great so far. Last week, I finished The Blood of Emmett Till by Timothy B. Tyson. It was mostly a refresher course on stuff I learned in high school, but I like that the author explains why Till’s murder is still relevant in modern times.

Then I read Negotiating with the Dead: A Writer on Writing by Margaret Atwood. Atwood analyzes well-known works of literature to discover how writers see themselves and their work. It reminded me of the textbooks I read for literary theory and criticism classes in college. The book is somewhat interesting, not very conclusive, and I have no idea why I need to know this stuff.

Next, I read Get Well Soon: History’s Worst Plagues and the Heroes Who Fought Them by Jennifer Wright. This is my favorite book I’ve read for Nonfiction November so far. It doesn’t go in-depth about the diseases, but it’s funny and surprisingly upbeat. I added the author’s other book to my TBR list.

Right now, I’m reading Salvation on Sand Mountain: Snake Handling and Redemption in Southern Appalachia by Dennis Covington.

In My Internet Stalking Life

In The Rest Of My Life

Between midterm elections and eyestrain, last week felt like it was a billion years long. Here are five things that made me happy:

  1. The elections went pretty smoothly in Colorado. I don’t think there were any huge problems like in other states. I helped vote a few Death Eaters out of the Ministry of Magic.
  2. Also, I re-watched Harry Potter movies. You could probably tell from the above ^^ statement.
  3. Nonfiction November has been fun. Every time I read nonfiction, I wonder why I don’t read more nonfiction.
  4. I got a new space heater! Honestly, this is probably a terrible idea because my last one started on fire, but typing with frozen fingers is difficult.
  5. This blog passed 200k pageviews. Thank you to all the humans and robots who share my nonsense on social media.

Why Am I So Lonely?

  1. I love Margaret Atwood. I don't know if you read her Hagseed, a mixture of Shawshank Redemption and the Tempest, I believe but I loved it. There now saying the Tempest is one of Shakespeare's best plays, how does Time decide what which classics were better...

    1. I love Margaret Atwood, too! I’ve read almost all of her books, but I haven’t gotten to Hagseed yet. Someday I will.

  2. I'm a pretty big literary theory geek - being a literature professor and all - so I may have to read the Atwood. :)

  3. Get Well Soon sounds really interesting! I may check that out sometime soon. I'm glad things went well in Colorado. Florida is a mess! So cool about your page views! Congrats :D

    1. Get Well Soon was a lot better than I expected. It was funny and didn’t overwhelm me with medical information that I couldn’t understand.

  4. Florida's voting always seems to end in chaos! I've honestly been fed up hearing from Trump on our news this week complaining about everything so instead I cheered myself up with watching The Thing, Predator and the Alien films!

    1. Yeah, I don’t understand why Florida can’t figure out the voting thing. Florida has been a state for 150 years. You’d think they’d understand how voting works by now.

  5. I am curious about the Margaret Atwood book...and I was also happy about some election results. Of course, it could all be better...if only.

Thanks for sharing, and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

    1. Yeah, elections can always go better, but at least I’m fairly happy about the results in my state.

  6. What a great and eclectic collection of nonfiction! I read nonfiction for my job (creating back-of-the-book indexes), so I only occasionally read it for pleasure, but the book on diseases sounds interesting.

And I love your comment about voting Death Eaters out of the Ministry. With only two posts open in my area, I wasn't able to vote anyone out, but I was able to keep a... well, I don't know if he's an Order of the Phoenix member, but at least he's on their side. Anyway, my vote helped keep him in office, so I can feel good about that.

    1. I’m glad a good person got to keep his job! Supporting the good ones is just as important as voting out the bad ones.

  8. "I helped vote a few Death Eaters out of the Ministry of Magic." HAH Love it, and good job! Last week was a weird kind of week but this upcoming one is full of all sorts of things - mostly fun! - so it should be good. I hope you have a great week too.

  9. I had a space heater many, many moons ago (under my desk at work), but I never had it catch fire. Now, I sit on my electric blanket. When my daughter was an undergrad at SU (it's very cold there), I got her a huge box of hand warmers for when she was working in the studio, which she used in conjunction with an electric blanket (I really love those things). Not a fan of being cold.

    1. I’ve had a lot of space heaters, and only one of them has caught on fire. The others just eventually stopped working.

  10. Wahoo congrats on the milestone!

Space heaters make my actual life. Our heat is included in our rent so as a result, we have no control over the heat. We have three space heaters so that we don't freeze!

I'm happy voting was smooth in CO. Illinois was decent, but watching GA, TX, and FL stressed me tf out.

I hope your eye is better!

    1. Thanks! My house is open plan with high ceilings, so heating it is pretty much impossible. I need my space heater to unfreeze my fingers.

  12. Good on you for getting rid of those Death Eaters. We rid ourselves of a few as well, though my local election for state representative hasn't yet been called. It's been hard for me to get past all the election news to get any work in this week.

  13. I really should read more nonfiction. I haven't in ages.

Yay and good riddance to the Death Eaters lol. Glad voting went well there. It's been so chaotic in some places.

    Congrats on the pageviews!

    1. I’m loving my nonfiction right now! I don’t know why they don’t do mail-in ballots everywhere. It cuts down on the lines. I think more people would vote if the process was less annoying.

  16. We got out and voted too. I took my son - he charmed all the polling place employees which I was thankful for, I was nervous about taking a three year old. (I kind of had to). But he got to see the system at work!

    Get Well Soon looks great!!

The holiday season always makes me want to reread and rewatch Harry Potter. I feel inspired now.

Have a great week! I hope your eye strain isn't as bad this week, and that you are warmer now with your new space heater!

  18. Congrats on your blogging milestone. Mine is rapidly increasing and I'd love to hit 200,000 before the year is out. I'm close. However, it is what it is so I'm not going to stress about it. Hope your new heater works out better. I'm really not ready for winter :(

  22. I tried to vote out some Death Eaters but it was an odd year in NC with less positions up for vote. I have purchased but not yet watched any of the Harry Potter movies (last year for Christmas in digital format). I have read all the books and loved them. I am making way on my Kindle freebies with a Christmas theme by participating in HoHoHoRAT this week. Anne - Books of My Heart

  24. The Margaret Atwood book sounds too much like school to me! I like your observation that when you read nonfiction, you wonder why you don't read more of it. I often feel the same way. For me, I think it's a little harder to find books that match my tastes in nonfiction, but when they work, they really work.

    1. Exactly! I don’t usually like nonfiction that’s dry or academic. Sometimes a topic sounds interesting, but it’s written in an extremely boring way.

  25. Negotiating with the Dead: A Writer on Writing sounds intriguing and Get Well Soon looks fascinating. I'm a history buff, so those types of books interest me. I went for a few years only reading non-fiction. Then I started blogging and fiction took over my life.

Be careful with the space heater. Congratulations on reaching that blogging milestone.
